Who is to blame for the result of Destiny's "faliure"?

Activision

Bungie

Which developer and why? Edit: I quote failure because that's what many label it as. Let me rephrase: Who is to blame for Destiny's letdown?
English
#Destiny

  • If the amount of money they made is a failure, boy do I hope to fail equally hard once I graduate with my game programming degree!

September's top selling video game. Such a failure. People still talking about it on the forums, even to complain about what a failure it is. Such a failure. /sarc Every time you log on here to say Destiny is a failure, keep in mind, you're talking about Destiny. If it was REALLY a failure, no one would be talking about it at all. There is a big difference between a failure, and not meeting some inflated expectation of success.

  • I dont think the game has failed in any way (besides people overplaying the crap out of the game and burning themselves out on it), but i feel Activision may have been the cause for any problems this game had in development. Most likely, a deadline and budget concerns. I dont think the lead writer or Marty would have left (been fired) on their own, or solely by Bungie. We will probably never know the facts. I love Destiny and Bungie, but i think its easy to see that this Bungie isnt the same one we came to know years ago.

    • I don't think I would consider over $325 million in sales in it's first five days (the best-selling new video game franchise of all time) a "failure".

      • Glad to see people understand that Activition is blame. As a starting dev in the industry myself, I can attest to how bad big published are. They constantly tell devs what to do and make all the final decisions (like the "cut content" fiasco) then throw dev under the bus when the game flops.

        • I really thought that Activision was going to remain somewhat hands-offish for the first incarnation of the game to let the company make a really high profile excellent game before they then turned it in to a assembly line like call of duty. I don't get it. Why wouldn't they first create a huge following of ~20 million players before trashing the series for every penny they can get?

        • I don't think the game has failed.... I just think that the developers needed more focus on what they were making. A game with a great story, an MMO (ish), a co op game, a balanced PVP experience or an unbalanced one. Bungie just needs to figure out what they want to make.

          • The fact you don't like the game doesn't make it a failure, I see a successful game with a successful launch, the game is played by thousands or maybe even more, but I guess you're right and the rest is wrong, right? You'll be playing cod because it's the best game in history of games, right?

            • The two combined key factors that messed everything up were: 1) Lead writer, Joe Staten, had left Bungie under a year before the games release. 2) After Joe left, lots a content had to be put aside or else the game wouldn't be able be constructed into a finished piece. With this, Activision still would not push back the launch deadline; causing the content that was set aside to be later finished and shipped out as DLC. Really it all was just a matter of bad luck, combined with the deadline not being pushed back.

              • Uhh Bungie obviously!! Even IF Activision cut content out, Bungie are to blame for a broken game! Activision didn't make the loot system, the piss poor attempt at a story, the arrogance, (from the studio), the devs who can't get it right, and countless other problems. Blame Activision for their money grabbing tactics, and poor servers but everything else needs to be laid at the feet of the studio that is Bungie.

              • Wheres the both option? Their both clearly at fault, shady business practices and greed are what ruined this game.

All Activision's a doing... If you look at the change in the story, it goes from the Traveler being a “bad” guy to having the entire brand appeal of the story revolve around the Traveler as a symbol. The same can be seen in the Halo series with the “Rings” representing a symbolic brand appeal. The Halo rings not only played a key part in the story of Halo, but they were also heavily relied upon as symbolic imagery used in advertising and branding. I believe that around 2013 when the PR was about to ramp up for Destiny, Activision latched on to the symbolism of the Traveler and decided to use this as the main theme for the game. So they plastered it on box art, posters and all over marketing material. They wanted to keep the “feel good” idealism of the Traveler being a unified symbol for the game, but that didn’t mesh well with the current story so they had all of the elements of the Traveler being bad removed. This is why when you sneak up on a member of the Fallen (Dregs) you can hear them say “The Darkness!”. Because you, as a Guardian, were actually supposed to be the “Darkness” but when the story got changed around they sold it as Guardians being heroes – which is why the narrative for the always online MP seems to weakly focus on the idea of supposedly “creating your own story”. I believe that the games tone was originally centered around a first-person narrative, with a coherent conflict - similar to a single player FPS. However, for some reason (or many), they removed many of the first person narrative aspects to the story in order to force the idea of you creating the story as you played through with your friends. This is why we always hear PR speak from Bungie about this story being “YOUR” story instead of “a” story. There seemed to be an actual story there at one point, but it was gutted most likely due to a change in the marketing appeal of the game.

Activision because its activision and Bungie because they always kept saying "when its not broken don't fix it" during Halo 3 and later days. You don't FIX, you evolve and improve the games, dumbasses... So i think they're both to blame here but of course Activision is more of an ass

Not sure why so many give Devs (not just Bungie) get a pass when games are disappointing. I'm pretty sure it was not Activision that told Bungie to remove the story. Maybe content that's now coming as a DLC but that still does not excuse the story. There are just to many instances within the game that are a direct result of Bungie decisions to blame the publisher. Also, the game is not technically a failure. It's disappointing but not a failure.
