Figured I would give a fair review... because almost all reviews I have seen are from insane fan-boys or players that just want to see bungie burn, is there no one on the fence anymore? I am going to simply break the game up into Pros and Cons.
Note: I played the majority of the Alpha as an Awoken Titan with a stupid looking bowl hair cut.
Pros:
- The controls were second nature, if you have ever played an FPS you will understand... took me less than a minute to figure out everything.
- Skybox and visuals were amazing, I have never stopped so many times to just look around or chase my shadow.
- The ability to pull a Sparrow (land speeder) out of your butt at any moment was amazing... it honestly never got old, really hoping for mods that allow for more speed and handling.
- The Tower... at first I imagined a place where a bunch of people were jumping on each others heads and dancing would be ridiculous... but it was actually a good place to slow down and helped pace the game.
- Exploration was amazing, I search around every corner and cave looking for everything I can and I guarantee that I missed out on several places... I am still blown away at the amount of hidden areas in the Alpha.
- If you were lucky enough to grab a high powered sniper rifle, how awesome was that? That's all I am going to say...
- A community event... when the skies turned dark and dozens of guardians all work together towards a common goal. I never skipped one... they really were a great surprise.
- Devil Walker battles... those things are beasts, not as easy as you think and really fun to fight. Kinda wish they were more mobile, they stick to one spot... but still awesome.
- Leveling up was extremely fast but really enjoyable, kinda hoping to see a crazy high level cap like halo Reach's Inheritor.
- Melees are awesome... I constantly went out of my way to evaporate someone with my Titan Smash.
Cons
- Confirmed that you can, but I had an extremely hard time splattering enemies with the Sparrow... I tried several times but no luck. If you can, it is not like getting a splatter in halo.
- PvP shotguns were ridiculous... I am not complaining because anyone who did not know this was easy pickins. Probably just need some balancing so not a big con.
- Can't communicate with other guardians without joining their game... it would be nice to have a quick command to join or leave, or even a fast chat... dancing, pointing, bowing, and sitting got boring pretty fast.
- No split screen, this game was made to play with others so really not sure why it is not included... had several friends come over and ask to jump in... really the only big bummer. It has been confirmed that split-screen can be added to future installments, but the developers felt that it did not "mesh" with the game. Poop.
- Invisible barriers... halo was known for exploration into places you were not suppose to be, I found myself hitting my head on several invisible ceilings or falling through cliff rocks.
- No place to "re-customize" my guardian... there is no rotate button when creating your guardian and I unfortunately picked an awoken titan with a stupid bowl cut... I was made fun of for the entire beta by all other guardians.
- Weapon diversity was a bit bland... they were awesome, there just didn't seem to be a big difference between one rifle and another, other than power/rate of fire. I am sure exotic weapons will completely destroy this con though.
- Minor mission glitches... I must have done 3 strikes without dying but never got the bounty for it. Also had a few Fallen generals stand around holding an invisible gun. Invincible Fallen also made a few rare appearances.
- Enemies respawed in the exact same location/formation constantly. This is probably just an Alpha thing, but worth mentioning.
- No map... not sure if this is even a con, just very surprising when I realized a world this big had no direction.
- Couldn't put my helmet on in the tower to hide my stupid bowl hair cut...
I know it was the Alpha... so take all these observations lightly, just figured I would share.
Would also like to add that I am a BRAND new PS4 user... first sony system ever... so if anyone wants to play destiny with a 28 year old dude that will more than likely be drinking heavy amounts of bottom shelf rum while simultaneously acting as the best damn Titan meat shield you will ever meet... send me a message.
