EU to get universal phone charger
The maddening scramble to find the right charger for your smartphone could be coming to an end.
European politicians have backed a regulation that will force smartphone makers to use just one type of charger.
On Thursday MEPs voted overwhelmingly in favour of the regulation, which will see a common charger used for smartphones by 2017.
The regulation was drawn up to help consumers and to cut down on the amount of electronic waste.
"This serves the interests both of consumers and the environment," said MEP Barbara Weiler in a statement. "It will put an end to charger clutter and 51,000 tonnes of electronic waste annually."
I know it seems like nothing, but thank god. All these companies keep changing their chargers to force you to buy more, just like Apples newest Ipod has a new charger.
I wonder if they plan to do a universal plug, who's would they pick?

I could see this being somewhat reasonable so that Apple couldn't screw people over like you said, but other than that everyone basically uses Micro USB anyways so...

7 답변So it's not the plug, but the charger? Exactly which phones aren't able to use standard USB chargers? This isn't talking about firewire/micro USB, it's about the actual device plugged into the wall, right?

16 답변작성자: Bistromathics 3/15/2014 12:29:42 AMI can't speak for the situation in the EU, but it would be useless to try to regulate the spec here in the US, where pretty much everyone except Apple uses MicroUSB. I can't see this as anything other than anti-consumer and anticompetitive.

1 답변Apple will still find a way to be different for the others, and get more money out of the consumer. It's also now going to be a pain in the ass to now make a custom product to one specific area.

inb4someonemoansabouttheEUmeddling Good, It's already convenient that my Tablet and Phone use the same port for charging and data transfer (Despite being different companies) but this should be something helpful, as they say for both consumers and the environment.

1 답변They would use a standard like USB, no doubt about it. There's supposedly a micro-usb type C being developed which can fit both ways, a la lightning connector. I think it would be appropriate.
