As Euler said, games are one of the few areas where the two compete. In fact, in many cases they work together. I doubt you'll find many VAIOs without Windows on them for instance. The Apple comparison isn't very apt for this reason. In addition, Sony has their fingers in so many different successful businesses/products that if they fail, something has gone apocalyptically wrong in the global economy (meaning Microsoft might somehow be in trouble as well).

If the PS4 fails Sony is going out of business, the gaming sector brings in 56% of Sony's profits everything else is in the red, they already stopped making TV's. I am not kidding here.
Over the last 15 years, the firm has shown essentially no revenue growth and its profits have been wiped out by its losses. One must be careful not to overstate gaming's ability to turn that around. Its Computer Entertainment division accounts for 11% of Sony's sales, while 56% of the firm's profits - disregarding the parts that make losses - come from selling life insurance, consumer loans and financial products in Japan. That leg was rudely kicked out from under the company this past quarter; Sony's gaming revenue fell 17% while operating income dropped by 86%.
