How long does it take for graphics cards to be outdated?

I know computers get outdated fast, but I am building my first gaming PC and I'm shelling out 200 bucks for a Nvidia GTX 660. It was released last year, but these graphics cards are expensive, will I have to spend another 200 bucks next year? EDIT: You guys are telling me it will last me about 3-4 years, which is pretty good. When I decide to upgrade my GPU in 4 years, will I only need to upgrade the graphics card and maybe RAM? Or will I need to get some more parts? Because I would be fine upgrading my PC every couple of years as long as it's only a couple parts I'm upgrading.

  • It's technicallyy outdated in 5 months, but it will last you for 4-5 years, until you have to upgrade, my labtop has a 640M in it and it's still handling Bioshock Infinite on Medium @ 30-45 frames, upgrading this summer to a Gaming PC proper.

  • Future proofing your tech can be a little tricky. You may only need to upgrade some RAM, or a motherboard in a few years. The problem is, it may no longer be compatible with what you have now... An example of this if the number of connecting pins from your power supply vs the number of pins required by a new GPU. I tend just to do an new build every few more years rather than trying to upgrade more often. I'm running an i7 3770k with 16GB RAM and a GTX680. I may buy another GTX680 to run SLi, but that will do me for the next little while... I'd suggest thinking about spending a little bit more now and having a system you're happy with.

    • You should be fine for 4-5 years. Also, get a GTX 760, they're only $50 more.

If you want bleeding edge, then every year. If you want medium-high level graphics with some settings disabled in some games, the card could last you 3-4 years before you become "disappointed".

        • It depends on what you can be happy with. I have a GTX580 and there are some games I cant play on max (DX11) but I am still happy with the proformance. For higher end cards I would suspect you could go 4-5 years even more if you dont mind the lower graphic settings. For lower cards I would guess 3-4 years. You dont need to buy a new card every year.
