With talks about Destiny 3 potentially being developed, something that I think needs to be added as a cosmetic item to actually show a sense of great achievement should be Armor Effects. The first game I ever saw it in like I imagine most people, especially Destiny players, was Halo Reach. Everyone knows that those who had the Flaming Helmet, or especially the Storm effect felt a real sense of accomplishment. I think this is something that Destiny 3 NEEDS.
I personally have never been a fan of emblems in Destiny. Emblems are cool, but I think they should only thing to resemble a personal identity, not an achievement. Whether it's animated or not, Emblems in any game have only been to show personal identity, something unique to you and you alone. However Character Flair has always been the best way to show achievement, especially to other players in the wild since your Guardian is who they see in the world, not your emblem. Having an Armor Effect shows other players who you are and what you've accomplish. Imagine for completing Desert Perpetual on Contest mode you get a Vex energy effect and those ribbons from the Nine Realm emanating from your character model. Everyone who sees you in game will know what you have done. This will cause other people to want to get something like that.
I think they need to be reserved for actual accomplishments though. Not as a Eververse cosmetic or Battle Pass item. Armor Effects should be awarded from completing End Game activities on Contest Mode, and the Higher Ranks of Crucible Competitive. For the Crucible Competitive Effect, it should only be granted while you stand in the Ascendant Rank and lost when or if you demoted out of that tier.
This is a feature that I think would define Destiny 3 and that everyone will enjoy, and it helps promote people to achieve greatness like how people learned of VoG from Destiny 1. Seeing people with cool things makes other people want those cool things.
