How many of you who play D2 seriously (maybe an hour or two longer per session) are old? I mean, say, 65 and older. I'm 80 now, and of course I have medical problems. And of course I think about dying, but even more, I worry about losing it, about getting demented. I play D2 maybe not well, but with concentration and focus. I read an article that using various online apps designed to make you think can reduce the chances of dementia. According to the duckduckgo AI (accessed just now, Sunday morning), these are the skills exercised by these programs:
"Cognitive Abilities Targeted in Online Programs
Online cognitive training programs focus on enhancing various cognitive abilities. Here are the key areas typically exercised:
Memory
Short-term Memory: Tasks that require recalling information over brief periods.
Working Memory: Exercises that involve holding and manipulating information.
Processing Speed
Reaction Time: Activities that measure and improve how quickly one can respond to stimuli.
Visual Tracking: Exercises that enhance the ability to follow moving objects or information.
Problem Solving
Fluid Reasoning: Tasks that challenge users to solve new problems using logic and reasoning skills.
Creative Problem Solving: Activities that encourage thinking outside the box and finding innovative solutions.
Attention and Focus
Sustained Attention: Exercises designed to improve concentration over extended periods.
Cognitive Flexibility: Tasks that require switching between different tasks or rules, enhancing adaptability.
Executive Functioning
Planning and Organization: Activities that involve strategizing and organizing information effectively.
Inhibition Control: Exercises that help improve self-control and the ability to resist distractions.
Additional Skills
Spatial Reasoning: Tasks that enhance the ability to visualize and manipulate objects in space.
Language Processing: Exercises that improve understanding and use of language, including vocabulary and comprehension.
These cognitive abilities are often targeted through a variety of exercises, ensuring a comprehensive approach to cognitive enhancement. Regular practice can lead to noticeable improvements in these areas over time."
These sound pretty much like the skills required to play Destiny 2. I wondered how many old folks who play this game seriously had seen if not improvement, at least little or no diminishing of their cognitive ability in their years of play. I know there have been studies over the last 20 years of using video games to improve functioning in us old folks. But given the size of this community I wondered if you could get a large enough group to explore this out in the "real world", just like you explore using a new medicine for an old problem. I don't know how to do that, but I know that Bungie ought to be interested, and I know that many of us live near colleges and universities where there ought to be people who know how to use our community to find this out. Anybody else want to try? Anybody know how to enlist the aid of Bungie?
Yes, I think we have a great community who just might be willing to cooperate to help solve this question. So, whether you are a serious or casual player, whether you love or hate D2 or just are frustrated or disappointed in the game (or in what you hope it might be), anybody interested in putting together, say, a working "Clan" of folks who would explore this together? (I put a note talking about this on what I think was the wrong section of the forum. Sorry to repeat it). If there is little or no interest (and I guess I don't know how much "little" is), OK. It's worth thinking about, though. We have a lot to offer the world.
So, poll question: I would be interested in forming a "clan" as a working group to study problems in aging and dementia? Yes or No. Please respond to this or drop me a text. Contrary to what many of our friends and family say, we are NOT wasting our time playing Destiny.
Regards.
