What are "good manners" in a group event?

What makes "good manners" in a group event (when there's a fireteam) when you have multiple players who don't know each other but were matched by the game, all of whom are doing their best to complete the event within the time limit? Should you all just try to kill everything that moves? If somebody gets in a first shot, do you or should you let that player finish the job, or help get it done? Do you, or should you, always revive a fireteam member? Do you look to see who has, or seems to have, which special talent, and try to set up that other player for success? Are there, so to speak, unwritten rules about who does what, who kills which bad guy, when to use grenades and supers (so you are perhaps "stealing" kills or even completing an event "early", while other players might want to keep the event going for their own reasons)? Are there rules of play that every player SHOULD know? (I'm not talking about the Bungie "code of conduct" type of stuff). I grew up long ago on the streets of Brooklyn, and you learned pretty quickly how to act in a pick-up game or there were painful consequences. But there don't seem to be such in D2 unless you are a public a-hole, of course. We all rely on each other's grace and best intentions. We all fail sometimes. So, aside from Bungie's code (which reflects the "real" world, and not the "game" world), how should a person act? Of course, I absolutely admit that I have an obsessive personality disorder (which did come in handy before I retired). I'm curious. Playing baseball (or stickball), everybody knows who you are, and justice is swift. But in D2? Is there justice? Regards. neuronji

OP: this is delving into the rock pool…interesting, too! My 2d worth: Be mindful Be prepared Don’t be a **** *Ancient Wisdom: Manners maketh* the man 👈 Gambit: I liked when we had the coloured armour sets that let teammates know how one likes to play…it saved a lot of time / confusion re invasions, for example…and not hogging the portal. Mote thieves grind my gears! 😡 However, the problem with Gambit could have been easily resolved if ‘in game’ achievements were team based / shared - regardless of who did it. Anyone who was chasing Dredgen / Malfeasance knows the pain of trying to get a specific thing done…when 3x other teammates have their own unique agendas. How I got my ‘team wipes’ quest done: on a good day, I could usually get 1-2 hits done (Truth rocket launcher was my standard), after fighting to gain control of the portal. If memory serves, I needed a set number or just 1x team wipe?! It was a long time ago! 🤔 In one match, I was fighting with a much better invader…my first attempt I got 3 out of 4 hits done. When I returned, he gave me a few virtual slaps and a waggle* of the finger (gun), which made me laugh…’cause I understood the msg! Next opportunity, I stepped aside from the portal, he disappeared, wiped the team…and did it a few more times thereafter…or maybe it was just one more time?! Can’t remember…but I thanked him profusely…and happily clicked that ‘job done’ button. Malfeasance is my HC of record. Raids (D1): playing with a regular crew every day meant that communication was never an issue. We had fun just goofing around, and, getting stuff done. We raided nonstop. We knew them inside out…and we all could do most things; however, who wanted to be the ‘runner’ or be the ‘relic’ user - was always a quiet moment! Usually, the few who were good in those roles didn’t wait to be asked…they just got on with it, whilst we took care of the boomers (Crota)…or, they ran the darkness to get us (drag us) to the bridge! 😁 I don’t do raids or dungeons in D2…ever since the Sunset debacle…as I left Destiny and became a Tenno (MR24😎)… These days, I usually run vanilla stuff on my mostly vanilla builds, and pootle about, completing lots of nearly done Seals / Quests and the like. If I need to go LFG / FTF - it’s not an issue…though it can be fraught with difficulties… Recently, I was after the heavy slot exotic Ray gun (Disruption?!) from WQ (?) that needed a completion of that trio of missions - the names elude this old tortoise right now…anyhoo, long story short, to do these missions, communication was key! In FTF I put ‘mic required’ in every post I created…as hardly anyone was posting…as soon as I posted, I was flooded with applications to join?! That did astonish me, I must say! 😵‍💫 Somehow, despite no one ever using a microphone- apart from me, we did the first 2x missions…don’t ask me how?!? The 3rd and final mission needed mics or it was not going to happen. After way too many failures because teammates refused to use mics, or communicate via text or emotes (a D1 thing!)…I gave up, utterly frustrated. I watched so many tutorial vids that I knew what needed to be done…and was doing it…but, because my teammates refused to communicate, as stated in the FTF post, it wasn’t going to happen anytime soon. One such video caused me to contact the vid creator, to clarify a possible anomaly. He quickly responded, and invited me to join his Discord, which I did…even though I’m definitely not a Discord fan. Two warriors with mics joined me, and we virtually got it done on the first run! Go figure! 🥳 I find Discord to be too noisy and way too busy, with nonstop updates and pings, that I had to exit asap! I still keep in touch with that group, at arms length…and with my 2x Friends…standing by, ready to help, if called upon! Out on Patrol: if I see NLs or other players doing public events, I’ll usually help out. If I’ve dropped a yellow bar and there’s a chest to be looted, I try steer the nearby NLs to it. If someone motions for help - I do. But sometimes, NLs can be quite unfriendly…so, if they display that vibe, I bounce pdq…after unloading on them, first. 🙂 I believe we need a flare gun or our ghost can launch a* flare (red / amber / green) to alert or signal our situation. It would save a lot of time and wasted energy, imho. Closing: the D1 space magic vibe is no more…the D2 Neomuna Overtuna (N.O.) vibe - where they raised the floor to ridiculous heights, is the order of the day…trouble is, the vast majority of reasonable Guardians can’t abide it, and have voted wit their feet! The TWID nonsense…BHQs radio silence…Marathon hype…the ‘sinking ship’ feeling…portaloo ambivalence…circling the drain…etc. This is where we be! 😵‍💫 I play little enough as it is…now, I’m waiting for Game Cube / Steam Game Library to launch…and, if the price is reasonable - I’m gone! 🤖 TLDR: 😴 That is all. Ease Things! 🖖👻 MTFBWY *autobot corrections

      • Brooklyn…..same here. You’re asking for etiquette among some groups that have no idea what it is. I see the human in you. It’s good to see. There’s nothing wrong with you, you’re just articulate and more complicated than the average NPC that’s playing this game. If they get mad at your post, it means you affected them. I totally get what you’re saying. Ignore the soulless and the ungrateful. Best thing to do, which is what I do, use your awareness and adaptability. Strike with precision make every shot count, make the activity smoother. If you see three unaware people shooting the same ad…. Shoot the one behind them that they don’t see. Wanting etiquette and standards does not make you less. Solid post

            • Don’t die stupidly. Have a functional build, murder everything that moves. My grenade buddies on my getaway warlock don’t care about whether you shot an enemy first, so why should I? I’ll admit it’s annoying when I go to strand grapple on my Titan or Hunter and somebody shoots what I’m grappling at, however I don’t care if I’m first or last on the kill count at the end. The most important thing is “did we get it done?”, and “did we get above whatever grade required so we all got T5 loot?” If the answer is yes then it was a success. In raids and dungeons I’d add “did we have a laugh and have fun?”

                • For general fireteam ops. It's pretty well fair game for whatever. Kills, objective, speed running, none of it really matters. The only things that really matter are pinnacle ops, dungeons and raids. For these activities watch guids prior to grouping up. So you have a decent idea of what to do and where to go. It's particularly frustrating to go into pinnacle ops on ultimate difficulty, grouped up with someone who clearly doesn't know the jumping puzzles and mechanics. Granted this wouldn't be a problem if bungie removed limited lives on ultimate content. I've had so many groups disband cus someone doesn't know where to go and immediately burns the revives. So if it's you're first time doing said content, please do so either on normal solo to figure stuff out. Or group up on master and under where revives aren't a problem.

Is there justice?[/quote] Unfortunately in D2 there’s no real justice like in stickball because online etiquette is mostly voluntary and bad behavior often goes unpunished If i remember correctly 2 weeks ago i did a expert glass way and one of the players started wasting rez tokens because me and a another guardian rushed trough while killing everything then i checked his previous runs and he did the same through 4 different runs in fact his highest death count was 30 and although i did reported him but it worth about as much as Ubisoft shares Another example: in WoT console you can't shame ( sharing names or end results screen ) bad /new players but if someone's uploads a video where someone being toxic then you can share it and although it doesn't change the toxic behaviour it do is spread awareness but it can be a double edged sword and different forums has different rules that we have to follow

It aint that deep bro... Are you genuinely having thoughts like this or trying to be an intellectual by starting a debate? If the first one then maybe get a therapist that is also a gamer. There really isn't anything to debate. Just start shooting -blam!- and quit putting so much though about what you should be doing in a large group of random people. If you want to succeed you should be doing everything you can think of to do so. If not then you're ruining the experience of others that ARE trying to succeed.

Very interesting post that got me pondering… I think there are consequences for how you behave in online games, but they’re not always immediately obvious. I think we all have a responsibility to play the game as intended (eg. no sabotage, no cheating), regardless of any code of conduct. That should be the spirit we enter matchmaking with. It gets more complicated when you get into the finer details. Some players will care about certain things that others have no problem with. I remember seeing posts on here from people genuinely annoyed at people stealing their tangles! I main Strand and I have no issues with someone else picking up my tangles and I will help myself to any that I happen to find. I think good team play is about seeing how you can be most helpful and effective for your team.  That’s what I love about Gambit - seeing what my team is taking care of and letting them get on with it; seeing what my team is struggling with and trying to fill that gap. However, speed is essential to win - you’re often “stealing” kills/motes/tangles!/etc. because you’re trying to be fast. So I think an important part of online matchmaking is accepting it can be messy - everyone will have different experience, skill, concentration, tactics, etc. When a team clicks, it can be fantastic. I don’t think there’s “justice” in the way you describe for your pick-up game because online anonymity and physical distance prevents it. Maybe the “justice” is having more successful outcomes because you contribute positively to the teams you play with. Or maybe it’s having a fun time because you don’t get stressed at other players doing something slightly differently to how you would do it.

                      • That's a complicated topic... In any nocom (no communication) situation I follow a set of guidelines... 1- observe your team things like class subclass exotic items and build set and aggression levels aggro is usually one of 3...(1 fast and first ) (2 support and secure) (3 Passive and cleanups) Usually determined by who enters the room first... 2 - consider team and possible individual goals...the activity you're in...reward thresholds and difficulty (revive tokens timers ECT)Weekly and daily bounties or quests including events and seasonal (can change drastically depending on how early or late in the season) 3 - support... flexibility is key This is the hard one... And requires patience... example... Arms week bows... Everyone's going to be using bows there's quests and a lot of people are going to be testing stuff too And to do those quests people are going to be using bows so if someone's using a bow assume they're trying to complete a quest try to set them up so they can knock them down faster they can complete their quest the faster they can be done using a bow so you can start taking care of your stuff... If you have someone close quarters hyper aggressive and you have a way to generate orbs attrition orbs for example provide the orbs give your barbarian the fuel he needs to murder things makes things faster encounters complete cleaner if your tank don't die your team wins... If you have someone hanging back preferring sniper rifles or scout kills probably doing a quest or trying to not be responsible for loss of tokens give them space to protect them save their ammo wound targets kill shields so they can finish them off this spreads out the damage helps with ads encounters cleaner faster... If someone's hogging the mechanic let them throw a rift set a barricade so they can protect the plate... The list is endless... Some players are very oblivious they won't even notice you're helping but that's the cost of being a team player sometimes... Complete the mission don't be selfish everyone wins... It might take a little longer for you to complete your stuff but you'll have a much easier time playing overall which makes it more fun so it's easier to play longer and it's a lot less stressful too... At least that's how it's been working for me at least

                        • Connection controls the outcome. Shots dont register immediately leave. Shots register no matter how the match goes do your best to lead, support or distract They have the first shot dip without backup. With backup get a shot if you can but still dip. Trades are a waste move with team to zone or sit back and try to protect zone but dip if its 3v1 unless you have something special waiting

                          • First off, match-made activities vary greatly from "procuring" a fireteam (either from FTF or your friends list)... so the following opinions apply to match-made activities. Your second paragraph about stealing kills & who should do what job, etc... imo, if someone is trying to farm for certain kills, or wants to prioritize certain objectives, then they need to bite the bullet & use a mic or game chat to communicate that... but most ppl who join match-making dont want to communicate, and the activities are (usually) simple enough that you dont have to. The left side of the screen shows you what the objective is, so thats what needs to get done, regardless of who does it. Of course there are certain approaches that are more efficient than others, but without communication, people just do whatever... and unfortunately, lots of ppl have no situational awareness, and are unable to adjust or work in tandem with other teammate. I can tell you some pet-peeves of mine, some unspoken rules that ppl should NOT do : -- dont be the guy who just rushes ahead & pulls your teammates to the next section. They could be grabbing a brick of ammo, or trying to kill a champ to earn revive tokens. -- also dont go in & shoot all the crystals or whatever to immediately unshield the boss. Pause before the last one & look around to make sure your teammates are at least alive or nearby for damage, not red-barring in a swarm of adds. -- pay attention to who is stunning what. If a guy dies cuz he's got nothing for Barrier champs, then dont rez him in front of the Barrier champ. Kill the champ first, then curse him for having a bad loadout lol -- dont be the strong-hold titan who runs up in front of the boss, taking his focus, and then walks around him in circles, making him turn his back to your teammates so that they're unable to damage him. *again, its mostly common sense situational awareness stuff... but lots of ppl lack it.
