Why is Bungie against supporting Linux/SteamOS?

Hey, long time player here, switched over to Linux a week ago and didn't really pay much attention to the drama Bungie had with SteamOS and how they basically refuse to allow Linux users to play Destiny 2 (and potentially future games). I wish to know why they are so willing to shun a portion of the market when they are all of inclusiveness. Are they afraid that Linux users, with their very customizable Operating systems, can circumvent security features? If that's the case, then how bad is your security? Halo Infinite Multiplayer has built in Linux support and has PvP as the main appeal, so any talk about "making pvp a more safer experience" sounds like an excuse. As for PvE, I can play Warframe through SteamOS and have a grand time, sure it's slightly unstable but it works well enough to enjoy it with my friends who play on Windows. Even with BattleEye as their anti-cheat, BattleEye supports Linux/SteamOS and all the developers have to do is flip a switch to enable said support. Bungie's refusal to do so is very disheartening. I don't really see how not supporting Linux/SteamOS helps Bungie at all. Sure, Linux only encompasses 4% of the market, but it's still apart of the market that plays/wants to play Destiny 2. Additionally Linux is widely used across many different technologies and its user-base is expanding, besides, isn't Bungie's servers running on Linux? I don't want to stop playing Destiny 2 as it is a very good game, but I am not reinstalling Windows just so I can play Destiny 2. If they refuse me entry just because I use Linux, then I will take my leave until they allow me entry again.

  • I think once Win 11 becomes mandatory there will be a fairly large change to Linux. As you've stated BattleEye functionality requires merely a switch to get working. If I've understood that we're not talking about a team of developers spending months on porting this - instead - one programmer spending 5 mins. Since Bungie is fighting for cash it seems a no-brainer and, as you also said - they can just turn off PvP if they're too nervous. Whatevs, thanks for the post ;)
