Ghosts of the Deep explorer mode missed the mark

I feel like Ghosts of the Deep on explorer severely missed the marked for being friendly to new players. Aside from being a terrible dungeon (in my opinion), the explorer mode did nothing to make it better. To compare, we will look at the Spire of the Watcher dungeon. I never saw myself attempting a Spire of the Watcher solo flawless because the nodes and mechanics were a bit daunting, ok not really, but I was never interested enough to spend the time to learn the locations. After running explorer mode 3 times, I attempted a solo flawless run and got through the first encounter in a matter of like 2 minutes (maybe 3?). Why? Because the explorer mode did what it was supposed to: -enemies were manageable -way points to show where to go -most hints were in a place where I could be relatively safe while reading them if needed The whole experience of explorer mode gave me the confidence to attempt a solo flawless run of the dungeon, when I never had interest in it before. Before I continue, I feel obligated to mention that I have done both Warlord's Ruin and Sundered Doctrine solo flawless, so in most instances I don't need the hints. Ghosts of the Deep however, I have never run the second encounter, and only successfully run the final encounter 2 or 3 times that I remember. As for the traversal sections, I have NEVER run the section after the second encounter, nor have I ever successfully completed the traversal after the first encounter. Which leads into explorer mode critique. I actually tried to take a moment to read the hints in this one to get a better understanding of the dungeon. First of all, the hints were severely lacking. I only actually recall seeing hints... maybe 3 or 4 times. One of which was in a water traversal section where I didn't REALLY have time to stop and read. The ones I saw that weren't in water, were surrounded by enemies that hit WAY harder than explorer mode should have, providing next to 0 time to read them. During the second encounter of Spire, there were way points on the next node of each strand, and when you got to the last section it gave an arrow way point to let you know where to do damage from. Second encounter of Ghosts? The waypoints for the glyphs you have to touch underwater didn't show up until you were in the water, and I didn't see one thing pointing or suggestion, to go into the water. The traversal sections are long enough that it makes me hate the dungeon JUST for them. I figured explorer would help with that a little, but there were BASICALLY no way points that I found during the traversal sections, except for one, during the first traversal section, that was almost a third of the way through it, and didn't pop up til you jumped down multiple stories worth of traversal... The final encounter, while I already knew how to do it, had far too many ads to read any of the hints that may have popped up and, while I didn't have an issue with it, a new person would NOT have faired well. While explorer actually convinced me to attempt (and ultimately get, because I will get it) solo flawless spire, it left me never wanting to go into ghosts of the Deep again. Just my 2 cents on the matter.

    • It needs waypoint markers in several areas and the help tips in the boss room including completely neglecting to show new players where to go to kill the Lucent Hive for the runes section is glaring. Bungie, if I have to go to a Youtube guide after reading your tips then your tips are not good.

      I think it’s lot less forgiving than Spire in terms of hints. Spire was quite hand-holdy, whereas Ghosts, which is longer with more complicated mechanics and, it seems like, way more yellow bars, is very inconsistent in its sign posting. As an example, in the underwater sections of the Knight boss, the runes to interact with are very clearly indicated, so at the last boss I expected the water passageways to the lucent Hive also to be similarly indicated, rather than ending up with me just running around like a headless chicken trying to find them. Also - never having played the dungeon previously - I had a slightly odd thing today at the final boss where I imbued the wrong rune and then couldn’t find another Hive to get the buff again. I wonder if this is because the dungeon proper wipes you if you do that, and the game code doesn’t know how to cope as a consequence. Dunno. I’ll give it another go tomorrow A lot less fun than Spire on Explorer generally, though, and this must have been an absolute -blam!- of a thing to complete when it was first launched. At least the ritual will be an easy bounty farm once I’ve finished it. EDIT : Well, I finished it, got a stripy Cold Comfort and a stripy No Survivors, and I am NEVER doing that again.

    • As a Ghoul with a solo flawless of the normal GotD I agree...when I ran through the explore mode just to finish the weapon quests with a friend...I found it baffling that there was basically no explaination of the entire underwater mechanic or waypoints there. Like on one hand...yea the dungeon has been out a while now and there are millions of guides for it...but on the other hand...explore mode was meant to guide and introduce new players into the world of dungeons They definitely missed with this one

    • I started the first part just to do bounties, took me 10 mins to find the Altar thing, then i didnt know what to do. Followed a path, no waypoints nothing, ended back were I began, no idea where to go or what to do. Years ago I'd have used YouTube but I just logged off, CBA anymore worth this dumb company

    • The thing with the traversal parts. I feel it was a call out to Sonic and the air bubbles you'd need to grab to restore your air before you run out. That being said not everyone has played Sonic and knows to be looking for the trail of air bubbles to take them where they need to go. Especially when it is a big aass area that gives many bubbles and little indication other than "go down." They should have made the under liquid methane areas way more forgiving.

      • I got to the water part, tried it for some long frustrating minutes and logged out. I never liked the underwater thing bungie went for during that content. Air bubbles?? Reminded me why I never did that dungeon. I’ll skip this week.

        • I have only completed Ghosts second and 3rd encounter once. I was carried and had no clear Idea what to do or where to go. The 3rd encounter is still a mystery. I know I have to into the side rooms and kill stuff but no idea what to do with the buff I pick up. The reveal shows you a triangle but not how it works. The whole is a mess with no clear path to success. The OG dungeon was worse and could not be completed by me and my average friends. Even watching videos we could not manage the second boss. Explorer mode while easier, is far from having directions that make sense. I do not even want to get into traversal sections. Just another Bungie Bungle that was put together by a clueless dev or one that thinks "oh, everyone knows this dungeon by now" so they did shoddy work that no one checked. Still the worst dungeon ever.

        • 100% agree I went in blind on explorer mode, the guide was almost useless, the end boss part was completely confusing made no sense. But I worked it out just couldn’t get the symbols to disappear after alignment, had to restart and had no problem after that very bullet sponge boss though.

          If any of the 3 dungeons desperately needed tool tips littered everywhere, it was ghosts. I don't need tooltips for spire to tell me that the next wire is 3 inches away. But it would have been great for new players to have the stupidly complex mechanics of ghosts at least explained a little bit. Another great bit of help would have been drastically reducing the 2nd and 3rd encounter health pools. Solo with a beyond average but not minmaxed build still saw me doing 3-4 damage phases per boss. Imagine a newer player trying to do an 8 or 9 damage phase run PER boss on the damn tutorial mode. To say bungie missed the mark on this is putting it lightly.

        • I agree, I've run the dungeons alot when it first dropped. Farmed the 1st encounter tons. Tested explorer mode. Forgot the traversal diving part.... saw no markers till I hit the bottom. The top "diving" hint wouldn't go away.

          Yeah, there seemed to be some sort of glitch on the final boss for me. I, for the life of me, couldn't understand what the hell it wanted me to do to spawn the runes. It said kill the sword knight while standing in the proper circles, but there were multiple times I did that, and the ring to spawn the rune wouldn't show up. I'd try a different circle out of the three, and it would finally work. I hated the dungeon when it first came out and only ran it the one time when it was first released. The only saving grace for the explorer mode is the lack of darkness zones because, honestly, it doesn't do a great job of explaining anything else. Also, having bosses constantly moving around while you're stuck in a well that you need to stand in to do damage is one of the worst mechanics ever.

          • I just randomly found my way down in the water after the first encounter… i think there was 1 part that had a spot to get to, but i found that by mistake after awhile… After i beat the second encounter, i had no idea where to go after i got my loot from the chests… so i had to watch a video… oh yeah you jump in the water and find a path to go… maybe, in explorer mode, there should be a waypoint??? that i needed to watch a video on youtube on where to go in explorer mode says it all to me. Maybe they needed that extra week to finish baking these?

            • Ghosts was a terrible choice for this dungeon event, Grasp of Avarice would have been a better choice with new players in mind with it's trap humour and run length. Bungie and good decision making does not live in the same sentence these days unfortunately.

              • Such a boring dungeon full of tedium. Long traversals and boring long mechanics. All for average weapons, pass. See you in two weeks to see how they ruin Prophecy.

                • It was ok, it wasn't nearly as crazy as I thought it would be, for realism sake I wished they kept normal boss health and shields, but I mean reducing their damage to me is nice. Now I have to run Normal.

                  Spot on. Spent most my of my time like a chicken with its head cut off. Nothing to indicate where to go. Couldn’t take time to read the tutorials. When I did, they didn’t make sense. Lead guy was 100 miles ahead of me. Says you must have deep sight active. Still never figured that out in the first and second encounter. (Mostly because on my team of randoms was an obvious experienced player) At the final boss. Must have deep sight. Can only deposit with deep sight. The timer is like 15 seconds. How is that enough time?? How do I know I have the right one?? Like I said. A chicken with its head cut off. This dungeon sucks and I am confident I would feel that way if I was experienced with it.

                    • Explorer mode much easier than the original. Doesn’t make it a good dungeon. Just not hard to do.

                    • It is just a miserable experience, especially at launch when the final boss had a immunity bug that needs certain weapons to deal with.
