So obviously the game is going to get a point where it's basically just put on life support, as in new content is no longer being made, and servers are kept as they were, just like how destiny 1 is currently. I hope, that one of the changes that comes, when destiny 2 reaches this stage, is being to equip and use old artifacts. Imagine instead of being stuck with whatever was the last seasonal artifact, you could equip one from a past season, and use the perks that it had from that season.
