The Black Garden, and a Giant Pink Portal, and Savathun

Savathun, the god of cunning The black garden, home to the soul progeny A giant pink portal, carved from the Witness Three great mysteries, all hoping to be kind of solved in this theory. Let’s start with the first. Savathun is the god of cunning. Savathun was our greatest enemy at one point, outsmarting us at every point in time. Until she…slipped up. Yeah, that’s where the question kicks in. No one as smart as Savathun SLIPS up. It doesn’t make sense. Now, you may be saying that wait a minute. Savathun isn’t perfect. She underestimated us. Did she? Did she? I think we underestimated her. Let’s dive deep into the story for a bit. Savathun brought back mars. I think that’s the confirmed opinion. She brought back mars so that we could restore her memory. One thing doesn’t make sense though. Remember when we got the worm familiar and brought it back with us? Savathun saw that. She sees everything in her throne world. So can I just say that she saw us take the worm familiar and was like “Oh, I don’t care. I won.” And why did she even keep the worm familiar. She had to have known that we would go after it. Otherwise, why did she booby trap it with an ahamkara illusion? It makes no sense. Something that important must’ve been on her radar. But she just didn’t care? That isn’t like her. She had to have know, and there is maybe something deeper as to why she may have let us win. Remember that she is now an ally. She serves the traveler. She hates the Witness. And she is a pretty cool character. The vex of the black garden. Okay, hold up a minute. Recreation of the veil, check. Darkness worshipping robots, check. Yet, there are beautiful flowers growing and a beautiful sky. You get my point. How did darkness bring life? Was the Black heart really a failure? Or was it extremely close to the veil? Let’s dive into D1 lore. Final level of the original campaign. We fight the soul progeny in the black garden. We get to the black heart. What happens? It brings vex minotaurs to life! But it’s darkness. Darkness brings only death. Yes, that is true. So…it was kind of close? We see evidence that it was close to being another veil because it was making plants grow. Red roses, and a beautiful sky. It embodies what the traveler does. It gave life. But it was sucking energy from the traveler, weakening it. So what does that mean? Well, it’ll all be tied together at the end, but know this. The black heart was a makeshift veil that was destroyed. And the traveler healed. Then we come to the pink portal. It’s pretty simple. Portal was made by the witness after it established a link to the veil. Except…something isn’t right. If I remember correctly, the Witness wanted to use the radial mast to destroy the veil. Destroy and make a link to don’t equate. So why then did the Witness want to make a link, but before that, he wanted it destroyed? It doesn’t add up. But if we look at the fact that ghost saw a vision of the witness telling calus to destroy the veil, it makes some sense. The witness was baiting us into going after the radial mast. It’s a light artifact. It’s tied to the traveler. Just like the veil. But it can destroy the veil. Let’s tie all of this together, shall we? Savathun mischievously surrendered to us and allowed us to win. The vex worshipped the black heart which was a makeshift veil. Then, the witness makes a portal out of the connection we established with the veil. So how does this add up? Well, from my theory, Savathun may have gained some insight into how the battle would go. She may have saw us as the chosen of the traveler, and knew we were the best ones capable of protecting it. That, or the traveler spoke to her and said no. The vex tried to worship that which was unpredictable to them. We know this from the deterministic chaos quest. But after we destroyed the heart, they still kept going. They served the darkness. Now, hold on a bit. Here’s the kicker. Why would the Witness make a veil if he wanted it destroyed, only to then want to destroy the real veil, then say “ Nope. Let’s establish a link.” It doesn’t add up. Honestly, I can’t really give enough answers, but there’s a connection here. Maybe I’ll find that out when the next season comes. In the meantime, what are your theories on this?

  • The Black Garden is in the lore the birthplace of the Vex, it is where the “flower game” was happening and was where the Gardner and Winnower fought. After fhe universe was made the Vex seeped into the universe As for the portal we have some form of president, remember when we couldn’t enter the Ascendent Plane because we were not “Ascendent”, we now know the Ascendent Plane isn’t necessarily “Hive” and Throne Worlds are carved in. Its possible that its a portal to a higher reality like the Ascendent Plane (this is my opinion on it what im gonna say is a some what accepted thing from what I understand). The goal of the witness is to balance Light with Darkness, essentially the goal of the Winnower (they are still different people) and it’s possible that that the veil made a link with a realm inside the traveler where everything is equal and one being is not stronger than another. And with the Witness entering this plane the being piloting the traveler can be balanced. It makes sense as it pertains to the civilians of Neomunda as the Veil allows them to transfer their consciousness to a server. This explanation gives us a Raid in the traveler for FS and a equal battle with the Witness by the way. As for Savathun she just learned the Witness manipulated her and shes still prideful and was upset about it so she manipulated it and saved the Traveler in the collapse. She then wanted to work for the light and did what she could to help the traveler in her opinion and technically she was in the right, if she successfully put the traveler in her throne world it would have been safe (we dont know how throne worlds work inside the Ascendent plane btw)

    • I think you're forgetting that Savathun's great gambit in Witch Queen cost her her biggest advantage. To regain her memory, Savathun required Guardians to use Deepsight. Which exposed her plan to the Guardians. Savathun has been such a devious adversary because her goal is always obscured behind her machinations and it's usually afterwards that we manage to piece things together. In regaining her memory to enact her plan, the Witch Queen exposed herself to a counterattack.

    • Hmm, let’s see. I think the BH is a great example of retcons messing with present perspectives, which I blame Bungie for, not us. Savathun and WQ, most of it was planned. Even our interference, all the way up to the stealing of the Traveler. That was her ultimate end goal and it involved manipulating us but her plan didn’t involved losing to us at the end. At best, she had a contingency plan for if she came back after losing there. A sort of ‘you’ve found out the truth and now we can work together’ sort of deal. Vex and the Garden, the Darkness didn’t bring life to it. The Garden is the cradle of creation, the Vex brought order to it, tended it like a Gardner. The Minotaurs were likely already alive but sleeping, like much of the Vex were when we went there. We’ve seen numerous times from base D1 to present. They were waiting for the Heart to gain more power so they could merge with it. That’s what D1 Elsie said had happened in her timeline, the Bex got empowered and gained immense power then ran roughshod over the Guardians. It was a major power up. Back then, it was a Darkness artifact that they found and worshipped to gain power, this behavior was explained later in the BoS. Now it’s retconned into a dimensional gateway of a sorts. But see, the part of the D1 BH linked it to the Traveler because it was tied to its power and health. How could a copy of something that still exists do that? Cause it would be overriding the 100% operational original and that makes no sense. Nor does the Vex making a immensely powerful Darkness artifact, as they can’t harness power like that. Bungie told us that D1 was like a comic book zero edition, sets the stage but can and will be retconned as future editions iron out details. So for the BH, I would take it at D2s face value. A gateway that could be harnessed to some degree normally (the cloudark) but whose ultimate secret required Light to open (the portal). Calus was a setup. The Witness has been spying on us, and likely every single Guardian, through our Ghosts. It knew we would try to stop him. It was a win win either way. We fail to stop calus and he succeeds, we stop calus and bring our Ghost in to be used instead. It was a deception. The retcons are what’s making your tie in so difficult. If you cut those out, it flows better. The main question is where does the portal lead. Far as we know the Black Garden should be the real one. So what other place are the gods hiding in?
