When did SBMM kill the Crucible?

I keep reading comments saying SBMM killed the Crucible when it was introduced previously. Which periods of D1 and D2 was this? Genuine question. I never paid much attention to this stuff until fairly recently, so I genuinely don’t know. I was just curious how people were so confident it was SBMM and not another issue with the game, or maybe a combination of things.

    • It didn't mate, I was there along with others. Never experienced long wait times, just good matches, evenly balanced. Yep, they'd be close sometimes but at least we didn't suffer from Sweat God syndrome like we do now. Obviously that's my personal take on it, as you can see others have different opinions.

        Ehy Guardian. For what I can recall, generically speaking the swap between CBMM and SBMM [i](which is something that Bungie does like every 12-14 months, I believe)[/i] always brought malcontent in a portion of the community depending on what players prioritize in their own experience for the Crucible [i](for example, a more casual PvP player may favorite SBMM because he'd rather play more balanced games while instead a more invested PvP player may rather have CBMM for faster matchmaking and more stable games without too much lag)[/i]. Anyway, everytime a type of MM is left active for too long it brings problems and complains. So CBMM kills the Crucible for who want SBMM and SBMM kills the Crucible for who prefers CBMM. And this has happened since D1. It seems that Bungie now will try something different, like a sort of SBMM with CBMM elements, or something like that. Maybe it will work, maybe no. Time will tell, but it's an almost safe bet to say that someone will be unhappy and will complain anyway =/ this seems to be the sad fate of PvP in this game.

          Unless you are actually someone that spends 90% of the time in pvp (like me) then you will never know. Lets just say, 10 minute que times was a common thing and if you think lag is bad now then wait until sbmm comes back. If you are on the lower skill then you wont notice any change in que times or lag. Sbmm only hurts the players that spend their time playing a mode they enjoy. Basically you get punished for being a good player lol

People complain no matter what.

              • It's not true. Go watch some clips on yt that talk about the game from that time, people don't mention sbmm at all. The game just was in a very bad place at the time. People didn't want to play anyway, sbmm was just there, and now it's used as an excuse, nothing else.

                • It didn’t kill it for the average and below average players. It killed it for those above average to elite players. During SBMM being a lower average player I never had long Que times. All the matches were pretty evenly matched. Honestly it was fun. When SBMM got removed I was like some of the others on this forum. I complained about how it wasn’t fair. I was told to “get gud” by the trolls. I taught myself to stick at it and to keep playing. I learned to adapt to playing better players. For the casual player base SBMM is best. Bungie is a company and casual players with cash to spend in eververse is much more important to the bottom line then a hardcore PvP player who plays this game all day. Bungie and Sony want to increase the player base. To do that it has to be entertaining and engaging. In PvP’s current state I cannot imagine how horrid an experience it is for new lights and low skilled players. If we want the player base to increase there has to be some sort of compromise. SBMM will be only in control. Mayhem, clash etc. will still be CBMM as will iron banner. What I would like to see is a ranked system. Emblems etc. Let the players show off their KD on their ranked emblem. A 1.5 KD with a bronze emblem is not the same as a 1.5kd with a diamond emblem. Just my opinion.

                    There were other things that contributed to it being bad before that are different now. Like the fact that the player population was split on console so there were less people for most people to be matched with. The game has also had other upgrades since then so there's probably more that can be done with SBMM now than there used to be. One thing I can't tell is if it really was better for the people that rarely play the game now and rarely played it then like they say it was. I know for most people average or above it got pretty bad before it got turned off. That's going to be one of the best things about bringing a form of it back, to see if people that don't play much start playing more or if there's other reasons why they don't really play all that much. That's something that's really hard figure out unless they bring it back, and no player can really tell which is the case right now. And it will be brought back in a better form and after a pretty rough period of cbmm where no one was really happy with the way it worked. Gee how'd that happen? 100% of everyone hates the cbmm.

                        Last time SBMM was in 6s was middle of Season of the Worthy, I believe. I remember queue times being much longer than now & a lot of players from China and Japan in my lobbies. I still get people from around the world but less than it was in SBMM. Did it kill Crucible? No idea. I never looked into the numbers to support which one is better, nor do I think Bungie’s SBMM works. I don’t feel like I play better players regularly in it. Comp supposedly has more strict SBMM and it still doesn’t work. I get bad teammates against a more stacked team just like now.

                              D1 it ruined it. So bad that they actually had to completely remove it because the player base dropped off drastically and the community as a whole had a e-riot.

                                I never minded Crucible in general, for me the worst period of time was between the last year of D1, Rise of Iron (idk if that was SBMM, i just thought it was the worst Crucible experience i had). The skill based side was still fine to me and still was doing well but between the lag, ghost bullets and rubber banding, it was just too much for me to try and enjoy. Just my personal experience and opinion though.

                                  • When Crucible used SBMM, there was Lag, Sweat Matches non stop(like bad bad, even for Average Bad), Disconnects, no improvement, Long Queue times, ect. Now when it was Switched to CBMM(Connection Base) Queue times went down, more Stable connections, less lag, less Disconnections.... SBMM is Fools Gold.
