You have been provided the information copied directly from Bungie posts. You were notified by Bungie and Blizzard by email asking you to which Steam account you wanted everything transferred to. Bungie also did a high profile campaign on PC gaming media sites to inform everyone of the changeover. It is not Bungie's fault as they and Blizzard gave everyone 14months to do the transfer in.

You lost nothing. The base game became free to play as did all of the year 1 dlc years ago... most of that content was later removed from the game for all players. The Forsaken campaign became free to play last year but was removed with the release of Witch Queen. So at most you are missing the Tangled Shore area and Last Wish raid. It is your fault you did not read anything on the weekly newsletters Bungie puts out, the emails sent to you or the info from somewhere like IGN, Gamespot or one of dozens of You Tube sites. Also under the games terms and conditions or Eula you agreed to let Bungie make any changes they want be it changing platform providers to removing game content.
