I'm 95% finished with the rough draft of a novel I'd been working on. (Now 100%)

After scaring myself with the climax, I'm ending up with a little over 500 pages. When I'm done, it'll be time to polish it up, cut out some unnecessary exposition and bloat, ensure the plot is coherent, and...then I'm not sure what I'm going to do...but this story has been churning in my head for years now. EDIT: Make that 100%. I have the rough draft completed, the stage is set for the second book, the villain, I feel, is pretty creepy. Now I have to go through and really pore over certain developments to see if they make sense, if certain characters develop the way I want to, especially the main character. He's a bit of an an -blam!-, so I really have to make sure he's compelling enough to warrant the reader's investment. EDIT: Here's a small teaser.

  • I've got a couple old clan members who had written stories that were published. I don't know by who though, and I never read them... But one (unpublished) I did read was done about our clan that was actually a very interesting Halo themed comic(?). It was several short stories, and another of our clan mates started doing comic illustrations for parts of it. All I can say is good luck with whatever you do with this, but I'll wait for the movie. I have just never liked sitting and reading.

I just went through the self-publication thing. For me it was through Amazon just because they make it easy and free. But no matter who you go with, understand that formatting is a monster that is completely different between platforms and publishers. Get ready to spend hours on each version. (Paperback and kindle are two completely different beasts for formatting even though they can be from the same platform). Page count basically means nothing. And spacing means next to nothing too if you plan to have a physical copy. Most publishers have their formatting requirements available. So you can check ahead of time and there are plenty of walkthroughs for anything you can think of that you don’t know how to do on your own. (I.E.: setting your gutter on physical versions.). Also do yourself a favor and make your chapter breaks now. (I don’t mean separate your book into chapters. I mean format the chapters so the spacing between them is always correct) I only bring this up because I was not expecting this to take the close to 16 hours I put in at the end getting it to the point where I could submit anything… never mind submitting it in a way I liked. If you commission an artist… I would definitely recommend you commission an artist… wait until you know the dimensions of your cover before you do. Your artist will need the dimensions and If it’s even slightly out of wack (too big or small) it will not make it through review when you submit it for your work. Also Aifos is right… editors are expansive. Also, you need one. Depending on the length of work and time commitment you want from your editor in terms of reviewing your work more than once to see how your changes work (make sure you agree to this) this gets expensive. But it’s vital. Good artwork also isn’t cheap. But it’s vital. All told of you’re serious about this get ready to drop a couple of g’s. Final note… finish your work, put it in a drawer somewhere and forget it exists for 3-6 months. Then come back and read it again. You’ll catch a ton of stuff you never would otherwise. If you still like it after that then talk to an editor. Good luck. Feel free to hit me up with questions.

        • Tartan ended up having to self-publish his through Amazon. Think he was sending his stuff for a while to publishers. Point is, if you want to go that route be prepared for a slog.

              • By posting this information here you have no choice but to publish it for all of us to read it. You can't just tease us with the information that there's something to read and then not share it, that's just rude!

                • Disclaimer: I’m not published yet, but I’m almost there. As anyone who’s been keeping up with me is probably sick of hearing, I’m planning on getting published by the end of the year. With that said, I can tell you my plan, which seems to be working so far. I’d probably recommend doing something similar. A. Wrote the first draft. Obviously. :p B. Gave myself a break. About a month, where I did nothing related to the book. C. Went over the book a good 2-3 times, fixing up errors, and figuring out the biggest plot weaknesses. Talked with my writing buddies, and eventually got it to a solid second draft. D. That second draft went out to a few folk I trust, who were either good writers, or at least good plot analyzers. Gotta be careful here, ‘cause not everything an editor says is necessarily right, but you’ve also got to make sure you bias doesn’t get in the way. E. While waiting for peer reviews, I went over it myself again. Several times. Many, many times. F. Fix up the book based on peer reviewers’ input. (this is where I am now) G. Third draft gets sent out to professional editor. Be aware, this is expensive. $3,000 is the cost I found for my 700 page book, double spaced. If your 500 pages are single spaced, this’ll be pricey. H. Finish the final draft based on editor’s review: I. Publishing stuff. Unfortunately, 500 pages is a bit too much for me to offer to be a peer reviewer, but if you’d like to send a chapter over, I’d be glad to give it is a looksie.
