I want to play trials but I don't want to use cross play as well I can not join friends on the same platform if they have cross play on and I have cross play off not even for a patrol or the helm. Lol. Turn cross as play off n go dark.

Cross play is required for trials due to the limited player pools. When you make the choice to disable cross play you will only match with others who have made that same choice. This would make several extremely small player pools. Bungie has decided that 2 larger pools is better for the health of the game and satisfaction of the player base as a whole.

Cross play is in the title.... Same platform is not cross play and joining a friend in a none cross play space such as the helm on the same platform is not match making or cross play, it's drop in drop out same platform coop

Not entirely true mistakes happen console players have played against pc players in gambit and PvP by accident as solo players not fireteams, I have screen shots and it was a thing. The entire Vanguard playlist is full on pc and console cross play. It's because trials pop is unstable and inevitably as the season progresses it goes down more and more and this is a thing because of bungies decision. Yet pc gets it's own trials player pool with a lower player pop compared to consoles.

Unfortunately, that is not how it works. There are 3 main groups, PC, Console, and Non cross play, this group is broken further by your platform. So, by turning off cross play you leave the console group, where your friends are playing, and go to your console's non cross play group. Think of it as you are now playing on a different platform so you will not match or join anyone that is not in your group.

Oh I know, but we use 3 Xboxes and play lots of crossplay games, so it's not realistic to change settings nonstop. Also having to jump through so many hoops means there's gonna be no one to mm with. It's crazy how the option is in-game on the 2 new consoles, but not on the other 6, especially series S who is in the same mm pool as ps5 and series X

My post was to clarify, your statement that it was not available is not accurate. Your individual situation may present you with additional challenges, but the option is in fact there.
especially series S who is in the same mm pool as ps5 and series X
all consoles (and stadia) are in the same match making pool. The generation pools were only used before cross play.
