This Season Proved the Pyramid Ships Are Not The Darkness

For those of you who don't remember me, I will introduce myself. I am Venextron, and I dig very deep into the lore of Destiny in order to learn as much as I can about the Pyramid Ships and the Darkness. I look at the available written lore, as well studying the architecture in the game and the cultures its inspired by. You don't need to watch the linked video to understand what I'm saying, but I will reference clips from that. Timestamps are available so don't feel required to watch the whole thing. It's just for convenience :). For over a year now I have had the belief that the Pyramid Ships, are not The Darkness. It’s a pretty bold belief to have when a lot of the characters in the world until recently have called them The Darkness, and when most people call them that as well. Back before Beyond Light came out, I made a big post giving my thoughts on what the true nature of the Pyramid Ships and The Darkness was. I claimed that the two were separate, with The Darkness being controlled by a character called The Winnower, and the Pyramids being piloted I guess by a separate race. There were several factors that separated these two as characters, but here are two that are undeniable. The Winnower only uses singular pronouns. "I am by all accounts the winning side." The Pyramids only use plural pronouns. "We are your salvation." Second the Darkness and Pyramids entered our system during the Collapse at two different times. This is shown by our vision from the Traveler and in the lorebook Marasenna. For the sake of time spent typing I recommend you skip to the third timestamp in the video I linked. That was the core of that argument, and language used in describe these characters was further emphasized on in Season of the Chosen. Now at this stage, Bungie began to make their move. I personally think the story of the Pyramids, and The Darkness, is quite a lot, and so instead of dumping everything into one expansion, Bungie chose to spoon feed us information through the seasons, and Presage is a very good example of this. At the start of the season, the Pyramids were for the first time, not simply called The Darkness by the in game characters, but instead were labeled as The Black Fleet. This was HUGE, as how the characters perceive the Pyramids, affects how the majority of the player base sees them, so for a character to decide “No, I am not going to call them the Darkness, but something else.” Was a big brain move on Bungie’s part. The Pyramids had a new name, and soon the Winnower would get one as well. Presage would achieve two things. The mission itself, was very much about The Darkness, obviously, but the corruption inside the Glycon was something we had never seen before. This from a visual standpoint, immediately separated the Darkness, from the Pyramids. Up until now, people were visualizing Pyramid Ship architecture when you mentioned The Darkness, but now there was something else. At the same time, a new character was introduced. This was The Voice in the Darkness, or The Entity. Singular Pronouns, and separate from the Pyramid Ships. I also examined the dialogue found in that mission and broke down the information that could be gained from it. You can find key clips from that in the video I linked, or in its separate video on my channel. The big take away in regards to the dialogue, was that it proved that the characters were uncertain about their understanding of what The Darkness was, therefore making them unreliable narrators. There are a lot of people who believed that the Pyramids were The Darkness simply because the characters said they were. Not ideal. The beliefs of the characters concerning the Darkness and the Pyramids changed over the course of three time frames. Part one was from Season of Arrivals - to Season of the Hunt. All characters except for maybe the Drifter believed that the Pyramid Ships were the Darkness, and clearly stated that. Part two is Season of the Chosen to Season of the Lost. Most characters still believe the Pyramids are The Darkness, but some are beginning to doubt their beliefs now. This brings us to part three, Season of the Lost. If you want to see the clips skip to the Season of the Lost timestamp on the video. By stating that the Entity commands the Worm Gods and is the original master of the Taken, Mara proves that the Winnower is the Entity. Oryx himself, says that they serve and I quote “The Darkness which is the Deep.” At the same time we know the Winnower is buddies with Oryx, as in the lore book Unveiling he refers to Oryx as “My man Oryx.” This chill way of speaking perfectly matches the tone of the Darkness in the entry Majestic Majestic. So, to clarify. The Winnower has stated that he was pals with Oryx, and there was only one being that Oryx was willing to be friendly with outside of family, and that was the Darkness. And Mara has said this Entity is what commands the Worm Gods, and therefore the Hive. Again I want to point out that Oryx says they served the Darkness, so that's further proof that the Entity was the Darkness. Savathun this season also speaks of something being beyond the Worm Gods, which we know from Mara is the Entity. The key thing though, is that Savathun compares this character to the Traveler as being the source of their power. Since we know that the Entity commands the Hive, Taken, Scorn and Pyramids, then it is safe to say a good chunk of their power comes from the Entity. And since the Entity is stated to be in command of the Black Fleet, they aren’t the big bad everyone thought they were, and we know the Entity isn’t on the Fleet because that’s where Calus would have gone (That's an assumption on my end I admit). And I also believe it’s not on the Fleet, because in the lore book Unveiling, the Winnower states that he’s on his way, after the Pyramids began their journey here, two years after in fact. It all matches the Collapse. The Pyramids found out where the Traveler was before the Winnower, and arrived in our system before he did. I’m not just saying this, as I showed in the video, this is proven in cutscenes and in written lore. So that is that. If you disagree with me, that is perfectly fine. Although I am very confident in this, I am completely open to changing my mind, and at the end of the day, care about knowing the truth, not about being right. I do believe that the true identity of the Winnower/Entity is still in the "we'll have to see" zone, but when it comes to the Pyramids, I do feel like Bungie has done enough to separate them as characters in regards to the lore, the language they use and is used about them, and their visuals when compared to Presage.

  • a while ago, a leaked named anonthenine (the one who made the "veil" leak) mentioned that the veil-who i assume pyramids are controlled by are trying to resurrect their master, i believe this "master" could be the winnower/entity and their endgame might be to give it a physical form akin to the statues we see throughout the darkness structures

      • Not a lore buff but I have paid attention to the story. I had a few thoughts. What if the Black Fleet is all pieces of the Winnower and will come together to form a sphere the same size as the Traveler? The reason to separate Into pieces is to gather and/or spread “darkness energy.” And what if in this separation they are “we” then combined its “I” as one entity of the Winnower?

      • If the Pyramids are servants of the darkness, is the Traveler simply an equivalent servant of the light? Are we working for an entity that have had no contact with?

        • I still wouldn’t take the Winnower and the Gardener as actual characters. I (emphasis “I”) see them more as the personification of the concepts of the Light and the Darkness. As in the light brings up complex life and helps it flourish (gardener). The darkness reaps beings and gains power from said reaping (winnower). I think the entity like the traveler are the closest thing to actual personifications of those cosmic powers, they are not the light or the darkness itself but the closest thing we have to a “gardener” and a “winnower”. Mind you the Darkness isn’t evil and the light isn’t good. Beyond Lights campaign is about using Darkness as a tool NOT a philosophy. We see the light as almost a religion not just a tool (I think this will change with WQ). Tl;dr I like your theory, I still believe that the entity and with that the traveler are the beings that use their respective power at maximum potential and follow it’s associated philosophy zealously.

          • Your analysis is largely pointless considering that Bungie not only doesn't even know what 'The Darkness' is, but don't plan on bringing it up in Destiny 2 anyway...
So, I think that at a point, just totally candidly? We had no idea what it was. Straight up. We had no clue.
https://kotaku.com/destiny-2-director-answers-our-questions-about-the-open-1796139202
Ultimately, we do owe our players a story there – what is The Darkness? – but that’s not this game. We wanted to remove as much of the extra terminology as possible and focus on telling the Destiny 2 story. • Gonna stop you on Oryx and the Winnower are buddies thing, that's a Big No. We only know Oryx Communed with an Entity. The Winnower has not been identified as The Entity. This is so far the List: Winnower Entity/Voice in the Dark *Voice in the Dark*@ Black Fleet Oryx/Worm Gods @- It's more Logical that the Voice is the Agent that Represents the Entity. And the Entity Is Directly under the Winnower. Like, the Entity acts as the Winnowers Sword and Shield, a Dark Guardian is a way. Just like I believe the Gardner is the Sky, and the Traveler is her, Sword and Shield, her Guardian. I believe the Entity is "The Dark Mirror" Xur babbles about in D1. And Expansion "Final Shape" will be the Time when who Prevails. The Dark or the Light, which is going to be our Guardian Nuking both the Traveler and the Entity. Again, all theory. And on that Note of the Winnower.... until I see "the Winnower is the Entity"....no.

                • Just my take but I think the Entity (which has no shape) is the lady statue with the bed sheet we saw in the Pyramid ship. Aka the Winnower. Aka the Voice. Multiple names for a shapeless creature. The Black Fleet is its personal “chariot” if you will. Sentient energy signatures housed in a vessel shell (like ghosts). Each a mind but all One simultaneously. Like the Borg with the Entity as the Queen. Oryx and the Hive are disciples of the Darkness. Followers of its tenets. But they are not it’s Hand. Much like the Worm Gods are not it’s…worm bits. They reach out to the Dark and use it for their ends. Much like Guardians using Stasis. Take it as you will this is just a personal outlook.
