Is making an extremist persona online funny?
The comments were all written by an Ohio teenager named Justin Olsen, the FBI says in federal court documents. And when agents raided a home where the 18-year-old lived earlier this month, they found about 10,000 rounds of ammunition and a vault full of assault-type weapons and shotguns..... In interviews with federal authorities, though, Olsen insisted that he was no violent extremist. Asked about the postings, the teen said they were “hyperbolic” and “only a joke.”
Now I don't know if the kid is lying or not about it all being for -blam- and giggles. I just find that it seems like there are more and more who are willing to push past the limits of common sense discretion to 'be funny'. So I pose this to those who seem bent on making fake personas online. How far are you willing to go with your persona in "making a joke"? Granted very few here (though there have been a few) have ever seemed to be unhinged and possibly violent. Whether or not they were candid or just dumbasses trying to incite others for their own amusement is something we'll likely never know. But know this, no matter what you post, it carries weight (some heavy, some not so much, and some just show your ineptitude or poor attitude), and your fingerprints. You own the words you say, and post. People here do take note and form opinions about you from your posts, and They are watching. Whether you think it's all just being 'funny' or not, there are still lines that should not be crossed.

  • I use iFunny and let me tell you, some of the people on that app are legit nutjobs. The right-wing portion of the ap is dogshit crazy to the point where these people literally: -Defend pedophilia -Defend the -godwinslaw!- -Call for genocide/mass homicide And they do it so -blam!-ing well that half the time, I legitimately can not tell if they're joking or not. It's insane. And I'm almost surprised that this is the first I'm hearing of an arrest over this because it's been so widespread for years.

  • It would seem more like a joke if he didn't have that arsenal in his house. This sounds more like he's trying to cover his ass by saying its a joke.

Hoss, folks can't understand the difference between opinion pieces and real news, so how can we expect them to act right on the internet, especially when their folks are telling them that no one on the internet is real and you will not make any real friends their, etc. Mix in that first heady taste of freedom, a certain amount of anonymity and you have stupid waiting to happen. When I created the "xombie" and then the "prophet", I made sure that no one would take it seriously. I mean first off, zombies aren't real and second off, no one would ever take someone claiming to be the Prophet of a cookie, especially one most young folks have never eaten, to be real/serious. Hell, even Bernthal is just an actor. He played in The Walking Dead as Shane and then as The Punisher. I had crafted it is a way for people to link it and maybe figure out that tiny Easter Egg. In my heart of hearts though, I always thought it would be hilarious if during an interview or something though, someone would look at him and ask him how he feels to be the God of a Molasses Cookie Cult, lol. I have a dark sense of humor, I have a goofy sense of humor, they developed to keep me sane. I can and will make a joke over just about anything, but I also know who I am making the joke to, which is part of the art of telling a joke. I am watching my son try to learn how to figure out timing and audience for a joke and it served as a reminder to me to be mindful of those around me. Folks just have to learn when & to who to tell a joke, they need to stop trying to be cool, they need to stop trying to be someone important. You have friends, real friends, they think you are cool. You are someone important, important to those folks around you. They are the ones who truly matter when it comes to an opinion about you, not media or fans. The internet is a tool, you get to decide how you use that tool, whether it hurts others or it hurts you. You get to decide if you want to build something solid or something that will collapse in a heartbeat.

You should ask Borise da mullahamiid, a far left Muslim that despises the penguins and is plotting to melt their habitat.

          • This reminds me of that crusader guy who acted super racist and homophobic, and a few months later he gave up and revel aged that we were all baited. Crucesignatus! That was his name! Is he still here? I kinda liked his not homophobic/racist form.

          • Pushing past discretion to be funny. Imo it’s to be famous, whether the venue is “funny” or not. People constantly putting out an image that gets them attention because they feel invisible or worthless. The sad part is, if they already feel like that before they post, then the attention they eat encourages them. If they don’t already feel like that before the post, the sheer amount of attention can outweigh the validity of the opinions of those you know in person. (Example: I post a stupid comment, my best friend IRL tells me I’m being dumb and I don’t really believe my post. I reply “yeah, but a million people liked it so what do you know?” kind of situation) so the opinion of those close to you is outweighed, and the response of the masses becomes kore important until you change to keep getting the attention. It becomes about “what will get me attention” as opposed to “I’m posting my true beliefs and gaining attention for it.” It feels like that mentality is what drives some to become active shooters. The feeling of needing to do some insane action that will make them famous, even if it means their death. So I don’t think it’s too far fetched to want to investigate this kid and see if he would actually plan a mass shooting.

          • I have personally never found "it was just a joke" to be a valid excuse. That line is used all the time from "dark humour" enthusiasts and too many times, those people have taken it way too far. So I think if something is genuinely just a joke, fair enough, but not enough people are aware that their dark humour can and will be taken seriously, not just from police but also just regular people, and most dangerously, people can be hurt by people's jokes, especially those related to mental illness and discrimination. And also, if something is genuinely just a joke, and not at all serious or offensive, they probably wouldn't have had to say so. :/

            • Sure, it was a "joke", after he got in trouble. At the end of the day, there is already enough of this type of garbage on social media. We don't need any more, especially in light of all the mass shootings taking place by those claiming/praising extreme right wing ideology. These people's end goal is to start a race war in the U.S., which isn't something that I particularly find all that funny.

            • ... Well I mean, I don't really think there is anything inherently violent about my persona, and most of it is just slightly ripping on EA, so I don't think there's a problem really...
not included in the DLC
• Not usually, no. If its overcooked to the point of sheer parody, it can be, but pretending to be an actual extremist nutjob? No. Theres nothing inherently funny or witty about that. As Xombie so astutely points out down below, part of being funny (outside of standup etc) is knowing who its being made to. For example, making cracks about Hitler or the Holocaust in front of an Israeli probably wouldnt go down too well. I can appreciate un-pc humour. Hell, someone on here made a wisecrack about "General Lee's revenge" in the wake of Charlottesville (it was a Charger remember?) and I almost choked laughing. Everything about it from the timing to the taste was wrong but it was clever. Anyway, there you have it - I'm far from easily offended. Regardless, we all have a responsibility to be considerate of others. Just because something doesnt offend me doesnt mean that standard automatically applies to everyone else. And, honestly, I do find it a bit odd that some folk get their kicks causing genuine upset to others. Thats the kind of behaviour that makes me think they need their heads checked.

              • Depends on what he said. I don't think that it being offensive has any bearing, it's more if he called for something to happen

Like all things, there is such a thing as taking it too far. When one says a joke enough times... people will think that person actually believes in their joke. And if that happens... sooner or later others will take that joke seriously. Internet communities are vulnerable to this, since those that take trolls more seriously are often mocked. Yet, the quiet ones that agree with the trolls will feel more validated as a result.
