Help new raiders.

I understand some of y’all wanna get it done fast but more people will know how to do the raid if you and a friend took some newbies in and showed them the ropes. People never get to learn how to do raids because no one lets them join. No one ever uses the guided games either. I opened one to see what it was like and after waiting for an hour no one joined the fire team. LFG raiding in D1 was a lot nicer than this you only had to have a certain gun.

  • I agree that we should be willing to help, but I think it’s also on the new raiders to have at least a basic understanding of the raid. There are plenty of YouTube videos that teach people how to do the raid. It can be very frustrating to teach a player how to the raid from scratch.

  • I've been big into raids this year, and try to sherpa when I can. I actually just fired up a twitch channel as a means to try and help the community through this type of stuff. Here's my take: it is never someone else's responsibility to make sure a player can clear any activity, no matter what it is. I help people when I can, and am focusing even more on that with the channel, but we all have goals in the game that we try to accomplish. Sherpa runs have taken me 3-4 hours before...that isn't exactly light work. I've done some of this year's exotic quests in less time than that. Put simply, its not my job to not make progress so that others can. Again, I sherpa whenever I can. If I know that I only have 45 minutes though, I won't be accepting new raiders. This isn't because I'm an elitist that believe's they're too good to help, but because it isn't fair to myself or the 4 other teammates to not finish a run due to a new player. As for the number of people trying to help, Bungie could directly affect this. As of right now, there is absolutely 0 in game reward for teaching someone a raid. The only "reward" is a tick on the sherpa counter. Since there's no reward, there are few sherpas...why would most players teach someone in a run that takes 3 hours, if they could get the same rewards in 30 minutes? If Bungie added a system to reward sherpas, it would give incentive to teach raids. Here's my idea, which would work especially well if they keep having raid-exotics dependent on RNG: bring back raid tokens, and make the exotic purchasable for "X" amount of tokens. Each raid encounter that drops loot could drop one token, so after a number of weeks the player could buy the exotic (if they hadn't already received the exotic through a random drop). However, the player could get an additional token for each new raider they bring through an encounter, meaning that you could get the weapon faster by sherpaing people. They could also have sherpa exclusive ornaments and shaders, literally anything to promote teaching of the raids. Sorry for the long reply, but I've thought a lot about this topic and think it needs to be heard!

    • I am a top 500 raider in full clears and have over 200 sherpa completions and here is my take on this. As someone that freely gives my time to help others I find it infuriating when players claim they want to raid but fail to prepare for it at all. They do not watch a guide so have no clue what supers and weapons they need or a general idea of what the encounters are like. Blind is a week one raid experience and I refuse all unprepared non clan raids. Why should I spend 8 hours so you can do the raid once? Do your part and you might have better luck but until then quit -blam!-. If you have prepared with videos hit me up and I'll sherpa you.

    • If had this problem also. Once my clan grew a little bit, I started to take leadership in teaching the raid as much as I could. I used videos to help me out, but then had my own twist to some strategies. Just finishing fully learning SOTP and plan on learning CoS this week and hopefully fully understand LW before Y3 starts. But to your point, everyone just wants it done, and I think that’s the problem. Instead of just wanting it done, no one is willing to teach. It’s the reason why the the amount of players that completes raids are very low. And then players have the tendency of just saying “stand over here and shoot ads” instead of educating players for the encounters.

    • I feel ya. Most of my old friend group from D1 doesn’t play D2 anymore, and I’ve only done Leviathan, and SotP just recently. Most if not all posts for raid lfgs are overly specific with very little room for getting helped, and making things for yourself say on the100 or similar most of the time get ignored. And it only makes it look less appealing to get involved with the community when people aren’t inclined to help one another.

      • Some people will list themselves on the fireteam finder as "blah blah blah teaching #" those groups are mostly open to teaching an extra. Look for those groups. And make it a priority to ask if it's alright before you actually go into the actual raid. I run raids and I'm open to teaching people how to do them but just make sure you can follow directions. Other people would recommend to watch a video on it, but I personally don't mind, I understand it could ruin the experience of seeing the raid for the first time, some people want that.

      • Look... there are plenty of quality sherpas out there. I get it, you’re looking on LFG for a raid team and haven’t researched where to find a proper sherpa. LFG is a toxic wasteland. There’s a few good options for you though: First is to gather a team of first timers and learn the raid for yourself instead of relying on others to teach you. Second is that you could watch lots of videos on how it’s done and be sure to acquire the best weapons possible for any given raid. Then look for sherpas through proper channels. Third and most important is to join a raiding clan. Most raiding clans will teach any members the ropes of any raid. That’s what I (we) do. If you’re a member of our clan and need to learn a raid we make it happen. Sherpas are not out there scouting through LFG posts to find you and help you. If you need them you need to seek them out through the proper channels. They exist and are very willing to help but they don’t need you and they aren’t looking for you so you’re better off researching how to get hooked up with them. LFG sherpas do rarely exist but are most often terrible sherpas looking to farm sherpa stats off of you while teaching you absolutely nothing. Don’t bother with those places. Try starting at 100.io

      • This past week, I was lucky enough to have people take me through Last Wish, SotP, and CoS for the first time for the triumphs and seal. I am very grateful for those people who would do that.

      • Tips for new raiders: 1. Don’t lie about your experience to get a clear. There will be teams that will still kick you when you’re being honest, but there are also teams that will help teach you. If you lie and cause wipes or they check RR, you’ll prolly get kicked and it’ll be no one’s fault but your own. 2. Watch a guide video before you do the raid. Datto can explain the raid a lot better than most sherpas can. Watching a video will prolly save your team a lot of time and frustration. And you can say “experience is the best teacher,” but having that introduction to the mechanics will help. Watching a video should also tell you what kind of guns you should bring into a raid, so you should make sure they are at/above the recommended light level. These nothing like getting to Riven and then someone says “I haven’t played in a while, so all I have is 3 blue machine guns and legend of Acrius.” 3. Listen to your sherpas. They’ve done the raid over and over, and they know what works. They’re just tying to show you the optimal strategy. Don’t try to convince them you’re really good with a sidearm/sniper/rocket at Shuro Chi bc it works in gambit. Put on a shotgun. 4. Know the difference between a carry and a Sherpa. A Sherpa will teach you how to do the encounter, while a carry will involve you doing nothing of importance. And sometimes, your Sherpa might put you on add clear bc that’s the least demanding job, but you can ask to volunteer for something else if you’re up for it.

      • I have done one, I repeat ONE raid in all of D2, and that was the Leviathan. I would love to run them all, but sometimes time is not on my side, or I cannot find anyone who wants to raid at the moment. I do watch videos to have a better understanding what I am going into, so I at least know what is required for each encounter, but still often listen to people when they say they know how to best complete it.

        • I used guided games once. The person who joined had all blue power level bounty gear, and had a hard time conceding that he would be better off using a shotgun than a sidearm. Took us 4 hours to kill riven, then he just left when we got to the heart run. If you want to learn the raid, that’s awesome, but please check out recommended load outs beforehand, as well as at least have an idea of how some of the mechanics work.

          • Whenever I raid with my team of 5, we always try to get one that needs to be taught. If I’m just doing it purely off lfg and just want to get it done, no.

          • The main issue is the willingness of players to teach others. I'm willing to take the time to watch 'how to' videos and to actually learn mechanics. But there are few who are willing to teach.

          • If new raiders were more up front and honest about their experience with the raid in question then I’m sure they’d get invited to continue more often. When I’ve made posts for quick kwtd runs and someone joins who’s not rocking the raids emblem but say they’ve done it or they kwtd I raid report them to check. If they haven’t got a completion then straight away they’ve lied, if they say they need a clear or help when they join then more likely to keep them. I have no issue helping 1-2 people per raid as long as they listen to what they need to do and have some decent weapons/armor that’s relatively useful.

          • We helped someone through guided games. I asked him how long he had to wait. He told me it was 2 hours and 20 minutes but he said that it was still more worth it then using LFG. He said on LFG you only have toxic players who demand players to know everything and be able to almost perform a raid flawless. You got to have at least 10 finishes, have the emblem, etc. Using Guided games at least gives you a team that is willing to help and take time to explain things. There are no players leaving all the time, etc. I must admit in D1 I helped a lot of players through raids and in D2 it is a lot less. I also played a lot less raids myself because of the same reason. A lot of players left and hardly anybody is willing to teach. I played Spire of Stars once, Last Wish twice and CoS now 5 times. Played a bit more on Leviathan, SotP and that other raid lair. Also numbers on emblems doesn't say anything. I played with players who had like 300+ finishes but only played the boss fight.

              • I helped my friend on his first CoS clear last Saturday. Posted a fireteam saying I was teaching. Post filled up pretty quickly, and it helps when people are just honest about their experience. This is just SOOOO important! Had two people who'd never cleared, but they were properly leveled at least. I don't care if they'd watched a video or not, explaining a CoS encounter takes a few minutes at most, because it's very simplistic. Wipes and explanations included, it only took us two hours to finish the whole thing, and all you need to do as a newbie is listen, pay attention, and do what you're told. I'm not ashamed to admit I kicked someone from the raid because they didn't listen and didn't play their assigned role. Get someone new in who does listen, and it just runs like butter.
