Playing with PC and Xbox on same network: Port Forwarding

I want to be able to switch between playing Destiny 2 on my PC and Xbox, especially with cross-save coming but based on the official networking recommendations I don't see how that's possible. The official firewall info at https://www.bungie.net/en/Help/Troubleshoot?oid=13610 indicates that for Xbox you are supposed to forward ports TCP 3074 and UDP 88, 500, 1200, 3074, 3544, 4500. However that same guide also indicates that for PC you are to forward UDP 3074, 3097. How are you supposed to forward UDP 3074 to two different destinations? Is TCP 3074 meant to be a fallback if UDP 3074 doesn't work? If that's the case should I just forward TCP 3074 to my Xbox and UDP 3074 to my PC? By definition (at least as I understand it) port forwarding takes all incoming traffic on a given port and sends it to a specific internal IP. It's not possible to send all incoming traffic on a given port to two different internal IPs and maintain the same port number. Furthermore without port forwarding you can't just open the port if communication on that port is initiated from the internet, likely why Bungie wants you to forward that port. The firewall/router has no idea what internal client to send that traffic to if communication isn't initiated from a LAN client, hence the value of port forwarding. UPnP is not the answer; that's a big security risk and Bungie should know better than to tell people to rely on it. So based on that how in the world are you ever supposed to have a PC and Xbox client on the same network and both be able to play?

 • I have Destiny 2 on Xbox, PS4, and PC. I have had it running on PS4 and Xbox simultaneously with no issues. The PC is going to work just like the Xbox. Connect to the internet, fire up the game, enjoy your playtime. You dont need to mess with port forwarding unless you have really strict router/firewall rules. As always, if you have any issues, you could forward the ports to the PC, then DMZ the Xbox, but it's not necessary.

 • i don't think you have to open any ports from wan to lan. Even if they use the same port, the ip packet also contains source and destination adress. The session is initiated by your xbox odr ps4 and stays open as long as the router doesn't close the port due to any timeout. As long as the port ranges aren't specifically blocked you should be fine.

 • i got a similar issue. I play with my boyfriend and we are in one network, both with PCs. We often get randomly kicked out together or just one. Now my Router dosnt have upnp so i try to forward ports but as you say i cant forward the same ports for different ip addresses. so it would be really nice to know what port the game takes when the other ones are taken already, but my router is general shit (free thing from my ISP) so i dont even see wich port it might could take. any ideas anyone?

 •
So based on that how in the world are you ever supposed to have a PC and Xbox client on the same network and both be able to play?
I've seen the PC game for instance use 3098 instead of 3097 when the latter is reserved. I think it's reasonably to assume that consoles will have alternative incoming ports to fall back on as well. The easiest way to find out is to run the game on PC with UPnP enabled in your router. Watch your router log the ports it's using for the game. Next, manually forward those ports for the PC. Check whether the game still states NAT type Open in the settings. With those ports now reserved for the PC fire up your console. Watch which ports UPnP is forwarding for the console. Manually forward those ports for the console. Check NAT type is Open. You can now disable UPnP.

 • Being a player on both pc and xbox on the same network both wireless I don't think that port forwarding they way you described it is a problem the ports just need to be open I don't think you need to specifically label a port for an individual device heck my sister has played Destiny 2 on xbox while I was playing it on PC then again I'm no expert on networking.
