Bright Burn

An interesting detail that I’ve noticed about how the Light and Darkness interact while in specific scenarios, particularly ones where a source of Light is ignited/rekindled within an area over-saturation with Darkness, is that the Light becomes much more powerful in these situations. We see this happening in the new Gambit Prime, with a pond of Darkness existing at a few strategic point on the map, and when the Envoys are killed, these ponds will erupt into a well of Light which increases damage done to the Primeval. This same effect is also seen in Tier 2 of Reckoning, in which when the Hermit is killed, another well of Light forms, greatly increasing the damage Guardians are able to do to the Two and Eight of Swords. I’ve coined the term ‘Bright Burn’ in regards to the latest types of sudden damage disparity between two sources of Light, but it isn’t just with the new mechanics that we see this effect happening, there are several accounts throughout Destiny of small amounts of Light be the stone that takes down Goliath. Think back to the Vault of Glass, in which the Relic that Kabr created played such a pivotal part in taking on the heavy hitters of the Vault, yet was said to have only been fashioned from his Light and some Vex pieces. You wouldn’t think something made from the Light of a fading Guardian would be noticeable stronger than any other weapon, yet the Relic is powerful enough to crack the Templar’s unbreakable shields, or clean others in a nearly completely enemy controlled environment. There’s also the case of Oryx’s Cellar, in which the fire team that took down the Taken King had untithed the Light he’d stolen, which then poisoned his worm, burning him from the inside out. It isn’t clear whether this was done intentionally by the Guardians, or it it was just the natural reaction the Light has to being freed, but even Toland didn’t know how they did it, which leads me to believe that it just sort of happened unintentionally. Its possible that we see the same effect in the Second Week Ascendant Challenge, where the three orbs placed into the rift release a well of Light that’s been assumably stolen by the Hive, which while in it, a Guardian’s Super charges exponentially faster, but this could be do to just an abundance of Light than the Light actually being more powerful. In short terms, Bright Burn Theory is the idea that Light will become particularly more potent when fostered and reinvigorated in an environment of Darkness. Perhaps it has something to do with a reclamation of this Light being more “angry” than normal Light, or perhaps Light confined within Darkness is somewhat like a fine powder in a sealed room, only needing a small spark to erupt. There’s the possibility that its essentially the same principle as carbon under high pressure begets diamonds, Light under Dark constraints begets more powerful Light, or that the Light learns a more brutal nature from the Darkness. It could even be a sort of rubber banding effect, in which Light being overwhelmed by the confines of the Darkness is akin to a rubber band being stretched out, and that sudden spark is the snap/release which causes a powerful backlash. Whatever it is, Light that is entering into a Darkness dominated area never seems to be quite as strong as Light that’s been kindled there.
