In defense of "I'm quitting"

When someone leaves an "I'm quitting Destiny" post on the forums, it's usually greeted with excessive derision or an opportunity to get in some cheap shots at Bungie. I take these posts seriously. As someone who's taken a break a couple of times during my Destiny years, I've thought about a farewell letter to Bungie a time or two. Sure, it's seems like pitiful, self-serving "look at me" stuff, but I think it has a place. People leave these posts to let Bungie know how passionate they really are about the game, and how certain aspects of it are driving them away. Yes, it's just a game, but if you're even here reading this post on a game forum, it's obviously a little more than that. It's what we use for recreation, to unwind, or challenge ourselves, or just feel a little better after a long day. That's a huge thing, and with a game as good as Destiny (yes, at the core it's good, you can't deny it), players can be frustrated when the game feels like it's being stripped away one piece at a time with balance changes, lack of content, poor narrative and content release mishaps. If it gets bad enough that they feel they just can't play anymore and want to quit, that frustration has to go somewhere, and the best (only) place to do it is here, on the forum. Remember something too, those posts aren't for you. They aren't mocking your ability to still have fun playing, and they aren't dictating how you do anything. These posts are to the devs, in hopes that maybe if they see someone has gotten so frustrated that they feel like leaving, maybe something will change. Is it attention seeking? Absolutely! How else will the devs notice? By sifting through reams of anonymous data where player exodus is measured in a bar chart? The forums give players a personal outlet where they can try to be heard. Is there a right way to quit? Yeah, there is. "Destiny sux" is not constructive feedback and anyone who feels the need to insult the devs or other players in as toxic a fashion as some do can just disappear quietly. But if someone is choosing the door and has something constructive to say, however passionately, I hope the devs are willing to listen. So go easy on the quitters. Understand that they care as much about the game as you do. Understand that they might have feedback that benefits you too, and remember that's one less player in the queue when you log in after they leave. Protests like this are time-honored, and if someone actually feels like leaving the game is the only option, I hope Bungie takes that seriously.

        • The game is fun and is clearly the best in it genre, that's why havent entirely stopped playing. But this game is incredibly disrespectful to the time and effort i put into it. When i dont get what I'm chasing after putting in all this time into it I feel disrespected and dont play until the weekly reset rolls around only to be slapped in the face again. This game does not reward dedication or diligence at all. If this continues I will eventually move on to something else that does respect the time and effort i put into it.

          • Thing is..... none of us care they are quitting.... therefore it's weird to make it known you are leaving... just delete your characters, delete the game and move on... oh wait they don't do any of that and you can find those individuals in the forums the next day.

            • Destiny is a product. We are consumers. The froums are a social outlet for consumers to discuss the product. This isn't uncommon in any industry. The purpose of forums created by businesses is largely to monitor consumer interactions, market, and to receive feedback. Well, all of those things take place in the normal real world. I've come to conclusion that many of the people here aren't grounded enough to understand these basic concepts. People on this forum express disinterest in the product and they are derided.

            • I only quit for a time because there is content on other games. When Destiny 2 loses content I will go back to the other games, when I am bored with that game I will come back to Destiny 2. Its not uncommon to see people quit games and try others for new content.

Regardless of whether or not you made this because of my post, I agree. It’s sad that a game that I love is shrinking in player base, and I can’t help but feel incredibly annoyed when someone just curses the game out because they’re bad at it. Some one had a post called, “destiny in the eyes of a new player” or something and I couldn’t help but agree with each problem he stated. I find myself to be more on the side of loving the game than hating it, but I am not blind to know this game has some really dumb stuff in it. (I’m looking at you wardcliff) Constructive Criticisms are not illegal, I love hearing them. Most of the time I’ll agree with them. When people who talk out of their ass and say something like, “Yeah let’s just replace all the guns with feathers, I’m sure you complain about that too,” it just throws gasoline on the fire. I won’t lie, this game has one of the most toxic player bases I have ever seen, and I really don’t have an answer why. Why do people constantly put each other down? Why is everyone always saying “get gud scrub” when people ask for help? I guess that’s part of the reason people are leaving this game.

              • I'm the opposite, frankly. Most of the time, these posts come across, not as trying to help out a beloved franchise, but as a punctuationless, salty-crusted parting shot at the game, the devs, the community. I feel like it's generally people trying to get in the last word, vent some anger, and feel justified in most cases. And it's all to no avail: Bungie isn't going to see it, and if they do, they won't read it: why do I need to care what you think, if you're no longer playing, etc.? I genuinely feel that most people are simply putting it out there to try to score a point on the way out the door. Well, you'll not be in the player totals for the day / week / month, so there was no need. And chances are really high that you'll eventually find your way back here, because historically, most do. And if not, we get the pleasure of your uninvested commentary in the forums, generally about how everything that happens in the game is shit, the game is bad, blah blah blah. Unless I know you personally, I can't care less that you're leaving, much less why. And as always, see you next expansion!

                • I both agree and disagree on this. Actions speak louder than words. Yes it’s nice to let some steam off while on your way out the door, But....Just simply not supporting a company you are no longer pleased with will always have a bigger impact. If the people aren’t there anymore then neither will the money. And when they see their profits drop they will either do one of two things cancel any future projects or fix the one they have made.

                • I'm okay with them quitting and posting. I do however, think a lot of it is kneejerk reactions and players come back. Want to convince me you're actually leaving - post a video of you actually deleting all your gear and your characters. Do that, and Bungie will take you seriously. Otherwise it will just be another "they'll be back" mentality.

                  • I take the topics with a grain of salt. If that person actually does quit? Oh well. Of they don't? Oh well. Pretty much pointless to come on here and claim you are quitting, list your grievances, and rant. Bungie isn't interested. Some people will troll the topic and others might have a good chuckle and move on. Impact is minimal at best.

Anyone familiar with the old saying "throwing out the baby with the bath water". Big looter-shooters are incredibly expensive to make, update and maintain. We are killing this genre with a thousand cuts. If you were an investor where would you put your money? In a big looter-shooter or mobile device games where people mindlessly throw money into them?

                        • Yeah just because I play the game doesn’t mean I’m happy with the state. I mean they kinda own the market in first person light mmo action games. Anthem and division do not compare in my eyes. Don’t get me wrong I loved the first division but to say the gameplay I’m division feels as good as destiny you’re delusional. I guarantee anthem is the same. 3rd person guns will never feel as crisp or responsive. It’s hard to love a weapon someone else is holding. 3rd person games will never have you as immersed in the game as a first person shooter.

                        • If you were passionate about it, would nit picky things drive you away? No. You really liked the game at one point, or one version of the game. That's not the same thing. This game is fluid, it's evolving. If you're burnt out, fine, but don't beat your chest about your passion for the game as you quit. Saying I love this game too much to play this trash iteration is just a cop out. You're taking your ball and going home. Just man up for once in your life and admit it.

Hard core fans spent all their free time playing Destiny. The game was about getting a group together to raid and then spending hours grinding materials to level up your raid gear. Destiny addiction was real. Quitting meant taking back control over your life. I didn't delete the game until after The Taken King. That's when the realization hit me that this game will end and none of this will matter. Now when Destiny stops being fun, I stop playing. It means no 1kv. It also means I don't have to go to bed at 2am after another disappointing raid. Fair trade.

                            • Imo for every person that makes a post declaring they're leaving, there will be several others who can't be bothered and just quietly give up playing. If bungie paid attention to this then maybe they could make changes to reverse the declining playerbase over time. (I mean other companies ask why you're leaving when you cancel a subscription so they can improve)

                                • I tend to agree with you....with the only caveat being the "I'm quitting...you should too" posts that are stupid. That also applies to media influencers. I've not played in over a month nor have I bought the annual pass. Main reason is (for me personally) because I've been burnt out playing D2....doing the same s*^t week in week out and I knew the annual pass was going to be more of the same. I'm also not happy with Bungies lack of tangible communication on various in game issues which has played a significant factor in my departure. And while I don't begrudge those who still play (more power to them) I too think it's important to atleast share feedback on what I feel has pushed me away. A single voice is easy to ignore but 1000 voices all saying the same thing is harder to dismiss. But as you've said....there is a right and a wrong way to do that so should you want your voice to be heard it probably helps not leaving toxic feedback. I still visit the forums because I'm hoping one day Bungie will announce something that will reignite my passion for the game. Having said that I'm rapidly losing faith that day will come. Shame really as I loved D1 but D2 just didn't have the staying power and Bungie made some really really silly decisions.
