So Telltale began preparing for closure earlier today by laying off all but 25 people, who will finish up existing obligations (I’m guessing that means TWD Final Season). It sucks, because some of their stuff was great. But this isn’t the first round of layoffs for the company, and rumors of bad working conditions have long been associated with it. Here’s hoping those talented devs get back on their feet soon.
Update: even TWD final season is getting cancelled. The skeleton crew is staying behind for Minecraft on Netflix, of all things. https://twitter.com/LawofTD/status/1043278296396357633
Update 2: https://twitter.com/telltalegames/status/1044370808657915905?s=21 nothing official yet, but TWD Final Season may get completed after all. Keep ears to the ground.

Telltale struck gold with TWD season 1 and then tried to capture lightning in a bottle over and over again. Sometimes they did well like with The wolf among us, but game of thrones, batman, borderlands and minecraft? They overused a good thing and saturated their own market. They were making so many things that they had 250 employees making games that don't have a lot of gameplay, are only played once or twice, and while they all have a good artistic style, they'd all look the same on a 360. Stack all of those bad business decisions with their ridiculous price point. 20 dollars to get into a game that isn't finished and then I have to pay for each episode so that I can get a full story? Are you out of your minds? I liked telltale games, but they deserved to close for making every wrong business decision they could.

I feel bad for the employees getting laid off, but I don't care so much about the company. I didn't find their games entertaining at all, I may as well watch a movie or read a book. I play video games for the actual gameplay.

1 답변A couple of additions to this: 1: TTG is trying to find a way to finish TWD. 2: Former TTG Employee files class action lawsuit against TTG for violating the WARN(Workers Adjustment & Retraining Notification) Act. The WARN Act protects employees and ther families by requiering employers to give 60 day notifications to employees before their job termination. TTG gave employees thirty minutes.

As it was, TellTale was just a dev company that basically sold you a movie with bad graphics. The choices didn’t matter, and gameplay was pretty much nonexistent. The “interactive movie” genre has a lot of potential, just take a look at Life is Strange, but TellTale, imo, wasn’t very good at it. At least not from the games I played.

While I always hate to hear about studio closures, I can’t say I’m super upset about this. I felt like there was a lot of potential here, but none of the TT games gripped me... I really wanted them to. But they just never pulled me in. I know the LiS references keep pouring in, but there’s a reason for that. I like interactive stories... I want a medium other than LiS to do it well (though my love affair with this series will never end)... and I hope it happens.

A case of a company that got too big for its britches. Getting the licensing for well-known IP's like Batman and Game of Thrones is not cheap, and it seems the games just weren't turning enough of a profit to justify that.
