Ive helped more than a handful get through a raid before on Destiny. All it takes to help people get through a raid is patience, a good team, and a good understanding of the mechanics of the raid. Not all teams know how to explain how a segment of the raid works. That is why there are videos you can watch to obtain a better understanding of a raid. However not all raid how-tos are good, so it is best to listen to your fellow Guardian's advice as well as the video.
