Has anyone realized how sad Uldren Sov's story is [STORY SPOILER]

He is fully devoted to his sister and she dies, then he gets corrupted and starts seeing visions of his sister and since he cares about his sister so much he listens to everything that the hallucination says. Then he creates a massive prison break in the PoE, leaves his former fallen friends and befriends the scorn who look to him as a parent. Uses all of them in some master plan that likely began the moment Mara Sov was presumed dead. Gives up everything and finally opens the gate to the dreaming city only to realize his hallucinations were actually caused by a giant mutant servitor thing that eats him and then later spits him out. Then we shoot him in the head after his corruption was removed and his last thoughts are that he failed to bring his sister back who was still alive but he never knew this, and then he just accepts his death after knowing the wrongs he made. Legit one of the saddest and most tragic stories ever.

It's debatable whether or not we shot him or not. Bungie left that open to interpretation for the players and whether or not we shot Uldren, or Petra did. Personally, I emptied the clip into that head of his. He had to have known that actions have consequences. All power comes with a price, and I was his. I was worried that there was some Lannister sh*t going on but it turns out that Shaxx banged Mara so thank god.

  • I wouldn't say he was fully devoted. He seemed only interested in finding his sister and was willing to destroy everything she created to do so. While granted, he was being manipulated the whole time, he still did it a way that his sister would probably detest him for. I'd argue that Petra new Mara much better than Uldren did.

    • I agree. Having such an intense love for a family member, while probably an unhealthy amount, is not damning. I actually felt quite bad for Uldren at the end of the story, and appreciate bungie for the element of empathy. Being that we aren’t shown shooting Uldren I hope he returns in the future. Because I personally wouldn’t have killed him, and I dont think Cayde would have either. RIP CAYDE.

      • Don’t forget, it has taken Bungie a long time to actually implement a story and they finally created an funny and relatable guardian who I think everyone likes and brought a little comedy to the game only to kill him off. I don’t think others care to much because most are concerned about loot and being the best, which is who I think I don’t see anything in the forums about cades death. It just sucks that the only character I really liked got killed off. I would have rather one of the others and only time will tell if they bring a new hunter to replace him as of right now I think it was a bad move.

        • Was it real love or a selfish desire? I mean, if he'd really loved his sister would he have killed her people like that? Surely a real love would have meant understanding her values and what she worked for. Instead he trampled all over that so he enjoy being in her presence. Isn't that more a kind of "objectification" than a real love? Also, at the end did he show ANY remorse for what he'd done? Yes, he was manipulated, but the manipulation merely exploited a selfish ruthlessness that was already there.

        • It seems intense grief triggered a psychotic break which activated latent schizophrenia, which would explain the hallucinations. I'm serious. When I got to the end, it was like, "Wow, this is sad. This guy's untreated mental illness is the root cause of all this shit." I also didn't like the choice to have the Guardian kill him. It just isn't the choice I would have made; he needed help more than anything else, and he was already in a worse hell than any bullet could have sent him to.

I still think way too many people give Uldren too much leeway. Like, yes, he was under influence of the monster. Yes, he was pushed and prodded. But in the end... all of those choices he did... were his own. If they truly weren't his choices, then the Darkness wouldn't have bothered letting him be sentient. Why trick him? Why prod him? Why goad him (sometimes frustratingly) to do something if the Darkness had complete control? The answer... it didn't. Uldren took his obsession with his sister and turned it into malice. He then took the only course open to him to get his sister back KNOWING the implications of what he desired, and did it anyway. It was not due to control, it was due to him no longer caring, and only caring about what might give him what he wanted. Now... can we show empathy for Uldren? Yes, absolutely. But can we say, dare claim, none of this was his fault and he didn't deserve to die? Absolutely not. Temptation is not a sin, and it is not a crime. The darkness, the voice, merely tempted Uldren. Being presented an opportunity to do wrong, even for a 'worthy' cause, is not the same as doing wrong. But he commited, and at that moment, he was drenched in his crimes. Guilty. And with that, he solidified his path. Think about it. He already killed many Awoken with his actions. Why would he stop at Cayde? He was already on death's doorstep if he was caught. No going back now. So why bother trying to be right? He didn't bother, because in the end, he didn't care if it didn't bring back Mara. -- And consider this hypotheical. Now... if he had found out that Mara was still alive... and if he found out that him removing himself from the Darkness would help bring Mara back... do you think he would have done so despite his actions, despite the voices, despite the darkness? I think he would have.
