Destiny 2 first timer questions

First time post here... Destiny 2 is going to be the first time I'm getting into the game (didn't play the first one as I didnt have any friend's who played at the time) and I'm actually pretty hyped for the game. What are some things that I must know about weapons, drops, etc so I don't feel like an utter noon when playing d2?

    • I would personally look the other way on this one. Best advice I could give you as someone that played Destiny from launch.

READ THIS People keep giving you very vague advice. Get a bunch of weapons? No shit, that's what the game is about. Here's some actual advice: Loadouts Almost everything in this game can be broken up into three categories: add control (add meaning additional enemy, like all the weak little dregs and acolytes and such), DPS (a lot of support abilities fall into this category), and a third role that usually goes a bit unsung: burst damage. The difference between burst damage and DPS being that burst damage is all at once, and DPS is sustained. Burst damage is good for taking out one or two very strong enemies, DPS is for melting bosses. For example, if I want to set myself up for boss damage, in D1 I would use a defender bubble with Weapons of Light (a buff to weapon damage), a sniper rifle, and maybe the exotic laser cannon Sleeper Simulant. All three of those are amazing for DPS. In D2, you might use Empowering Rift and a Linear Fusion Rifle. However, if there's a Captain surrounded by a lot of adds, you might want a Nova Bomb so you can just wipe them all out with the press of a button. Here's a list of examples of things that fall into each category: Add control: most primaries (especially those with explosive rounds. Think Sunshot), large AOE grenades, most roaming supers, grenade launchers, Healing Rift, etc. DPS: Empowering Rift, Rally Barricade (to eliminate reload times), sniper rifles (probably. We're not really sure yet what their damage will be like in D2), high impact scout rifles, linear fusion rifles, Golden Gun, etc. Burst Damage: Shotguns, Fusion Rifles, Nova Bomb, Fist of Havoc, Rocket Launchers, sticky grenades, etc. And keep in mind there's a lot of overlap. Rocket Launchers are also very good for add control, and Arcstrider also fits add control and burst damage. So for Destiny 2, I would recommend trying to keep a balanced loadout. Something like Striker Titan with Rally Barricade, Explosive Rounds Hand Cannon, high impact Scout Rifle, Fusion Rifle. Add control: double grenades from Striker, explosive rounds hand cannon DPS: high impact Scout Rifle with Rally Barricade Burst damage: Striker super and Fusion Rifle Strategy There are very few times when you'll be able to just go in guns blazing and expect to make it out okay. The most important tip I can give you is STAY AT RANGE. Enemies in Destiny are generally pretty bad at long range fights, and going melee mode will just get you surrounded. Use the cover around you and take fights slowly. And never try to use a shotgun on a boss. That's a telltale sign of a bad player. All bosses have a melee attack. If you do find yourself too deep, just run away. With the exception of a few sniper type enemies, the AI is super inaccurate. Half the time they won't even hit you during your retreat. Regenerate health and continue the fight from your new, safer position. You brought a scout rifle for a reason. This should get you through the story and most strikes pretty easily, but there's separate strategies and loadout considerations for when you're doing a raid. For instance, in raids you might have to sacrifice some burst damage for DPS. As a Warlock you might have to switch from Healing Rift to Empowering Rift. But by the time you're at that point in the game you should already have a good idea as to why those things are the way they are. Enjoy Destiny 2, Guardian. Eyes up.

        • Play to enjoy the game and take everything on the forums with a heaping helping of salt. Also, take your time. Like any loot driven game if you burn through everything you'll find yourself bored. Also try to get into a good clan. Preferably one with a good mix of hard chargers and casuals so you can have fun at your own pace.

            • find a clan, create a clan so that you always have players you want to play with, lfg is toxic and if you don't put in hundreds if not thousnds of hours and become proficient at raiding or pvp you will find it difficult to get along in that area. try lots of weapons, subclasses and enjoy the game.

              • Every friend online years from now and still on your friendslist will be from Destiny 2. Whether it be a random that you met in the farm or in patrol, or in most cases with lfg and getting into raid parties and what not, that's where your friends are going to come from. In the first year of Destiny i met ~40 true friends and played with most of them consistently

                • Loot is organized based on rarity into five tiers of colours. White = most common basic gear. Everyone started with white gear during Destiny. I doubt it will be different in Destiny 2. Green = Uncommon gear. Generally will be slightly more powerful and have more perks than White. Blue = Rare gear. The basic staple that makes up most Destiny players inventory early on. Purple = Legendary gear. Legendary gear makes up the top-tier items that form the backbone of any long-time Destiny players inventory. Best selection of perks and power but are generally harder to come by compared to lesser-tier items. Gold/Yellow = Exotic gear. Specialty items that are extremely unique in their design and function. Most have a defined purpose to their use and are often meant to support or provide unique playstyles. Exotic gear is often equal with Legendary gear in terms of strength.

Don't limit yourself to one class. Make your first character choice, allow yourself enough play time to get really comfortable with the basic class itself. Disregard the "super factor"; focus on the other talents (e.g., movement abilities, grenades, class specific abilities [these will be new in D2], etc.) that are used more frequently than the super. Once your really comfortable with your first character, create a second class; repeat the process, and finally create your third class. Each class has its strengths and weaknesses; your specific play style will dictate which feels best to/for you. One class may suit your solo game; another, the way you play as a team member. There are going to be three (3) weapon classes in D2: kinetic weapons: ARs, scout rifles, SMGs, hand cannons, pulse rifles, and side arms; energy weapons: includes all the kinetic weapons listed above, but with elemental damage modifiers, and power weapons: sniper rifles, fusion rifles, grenade launchers, and shotguns [I believe there are both kinetic and elemental damage weapons in this class) There are different weapons manufacturers in Destiny so you'll find more than one model of a given weapon type. I would recommend trying at least one of each of weapon sub-type within all of the given archetypes. In general; based on other games you've played you may prefer assault rifles above other primaries, but try the pulse rifles, scout rifles, SMGs, hand cannons, side arms too. You never know... The same applies to the power weapons as well.

General information: get comfortable with your skills and abilities in your activities of choice, and then consider seeking a clan. This helps you have access to higher level rewards and activities, and overall clan activity will (somehow) be giving rewards to everyone in that clan weekly. Find good places to go hunt mobs and kill anything in range to help increase the number of drops you can get. Participate in every public event you can, as they are generally fairly rewarding for a moderate amount of effort. Find Lost Sectors and pay attention to Flash Points when they come out, as these will be good ways to get into the better loot pools as well. Strikes are a major loot grinding activity, raids are generally the source for exclusive rewards, both weapons and armor, and usually will have an exotic tied to them in some way if history is any guide. Crucible will have another set of rewards, some of which may be exclusive to PvP. There will likely be a gunsmith system which will give you access to a set of specific weapons as well, although the how and what have yet to be talked about. Generally, kill all the things, meet all the people, go to all the places, and loot all the loots to try and win the fight against the evil agents of RNG, Inc. And check out weapon reviews on YouTube and the Armory section of the D2 page when it comes out, so you can target specific items to chase and ensure you are doing the right thing to be able to get them.

                            • You better make some friends ASAP, because going at it alone is a chore. Random people will hate you for petty reasons. RNG will find a way to screw you over. Bungie will most likely nerf your favorite weapon.

Welcome to destiny buddy unfortunately in the forums you'll get a lot of trolls and people who think they are comedians (but clearly not). I would say go buy destiny 1 just the first part for like £7 second hand it won't take you long to finish it and it will give you a general understanding of the basics. Don't worry about having friends play the game as you can join a clan and make friends that way. D2 is a change even for most of us so just enjoy the game and have fun.

Drops are guaranteed at boss fights, but can also drop randomly from enemies. As you will be levelling your character, try to clear every add you find, because the more the kills, the more likely the drop. Find what weapon archetype is your go-to-weapon, but try all weapons to get a knack of them (in some activites like raids, you might as well as be forced to use a particular weapon archetype due to it being miles better than others in some situations). Also, in finding your best archetype (especially in PvE), don't listen to others, but play and test and stick to what is more suitable for you. The most comfortable you will while playing, the most fluid the game will seem to you, hence the most funny. Try also different character classes for the same reason. This is important not only for you're engagement and long time commitment to the game but also to be aware of what others can do, whether they're with you (endgame pve content, fireteams in PvP) or against you (PvP, know what your enemy can do and you will be able to think about how to counter them). My first personal advice would be: try not to play solo when you're playing solo (you will at the beginning). In the matchmaking activities (regular strikes, crucible) you more likely than not will be paired with people you've never known/cannot communicate with. Learn to support them and play together as a team. Master that, and the game will be extremely fun for you, because the next step will be to play like that with people you can communicate with and/or you're accustomed to playing with. Secondly, especially in patrols and social spaces, explore areas. There is nothing like opening a chest nobody told you about, finding some extra loot that (especially at the beginning) will be useful for you to purchase gear you desire/trade. Destiny has actually a great lore and construct behind it, so enjoy every crevise you look at, every cutscene you're involved in. I've had my best fun in this game when I was not rushing things (this is a personal opinion, it comes down to the kind of gamer you are). If you will be in the mood, find and join a clan. Clans are useful since 1) the people you play most with will likely be there and 2) they're an immediate source of comrades and intel about the game, the gear, and events. Moreover, clans will be more useful than ever in D2 as there will be shared rewards.
