The beta failed to meet even my lowered expectations

I've got limited space here, so rather than dissect my entire experience with the beta, beating the dead horse on a NUMBER of known issues that I believe have been fully fleshed out, I'm going to just to discuss the things that I think are most important to hammer home: First, while I believe the beta is quite possibly the worst thing I have ever seen from modern gaming (the animations from Mass Effect: Andromeda were at least amusing before they were fixed), I do have a couple of positive comments. Bungie's environmental design team, once again, hit it out of the park! They are quite literally the ONLY thing I consider about this company to be AAA+ quality. No matter whether it was the story mission or the strike, the world environments were amazing. And the strike itself, if you removed all of the spongy enemies and the spongie bosses, wasn't half bad. A little long for my taste, but it had its fun moments. Now, the bad: 1. The weapons - globally, they felt terrible and REALLY weak. It took multiple shots to take down even average red-bar ads. The perks are watered down and unless it was a perk that effected your magazine size or DRASTICALLY effected shot rate, you didn't notice a big difference in performance. Even power weapon performance was comical. I shot Banner the Unbent about 14 times with my sniper, most of the shots being headshots, and it didn't move his health bar below half! Grenade launchers did little to no damage to the boss and were highly inaccurate. Fusion rifles didn't wow me, and shotgun wasn't even playable. I finally got my hands on a RL, but at that point, the beta had already shattered my resolve to try to go back into any activity to test it out. 2. The new loadout: Two primary weapon system SUCKS far more than even I could have imagined. I wasn't a fan of the system when they announced it at the reveal, and have railed on and on about it since that time, and often times I was criticized for judging something I hadn't tried yet. Well I have, and its even worse than I could have imagined. The new system is effectively a WORSE newb combo from Halo - use energy weapon to crack shields, switch to kinetic to finish him off. Except the newb combo was easy and quick to execute and was mostly an insta-kill, whereas in Destiny, you have to plink at the shielded enemy with multiple shots, then switch to your kinetic to whittle away at them some more. Even as a huge Halo fan, I gotta say - this is a poorly executed attempt at replicating that system. 3. Ammo economy: Was terrible. I may have seen more power weapon ammo than most people on here report, but it wasn't MUCH more. Often times, I'd never see a brick drop. And several times I ran out of either energy/kinetic, and was in serious danger to run out of ammo completely. 4. Ability/Super recharge: Again, slow. Bungie's already aware of this, but I doubt a good fix is possible. Armor perks reducing recharge time can only go so far because, due to the unified sandbox, it ALL has to be balanced for PVP - and we now see that PVP will be Bungie's ONLY priority. 5. New supers: They weren't even worth having IMO. They were better used to clear minions than they were to try to do DPS, and you got it so rarely that you might as well have been playing Battlefield 1. Having multiple abilities mapped to the same button is a bad idea in what can often be an action packed shooter. Often I did not use the ability I wanted to, and also wasted my party ability by sliding into cover and then unintentionally deploying it at the end of my slide. 6. Movement: does not feel smooth or natural. Feels very awkward, and ALL characters walk/run really slow. The jumps don't feel natural and often times, you feel like you are fighting your own character to get him to do what you want him to do. If your counting on exploration keeping people intrigued, this system is simply going to hinder their experience. I can't even get close to making jumps I KNOW I could make easily in D1. 7. Enemy health/armor: They're all bullet sponges, even the red-bar ads! Majors have become mini-bosses, and it is so painful to just chip away at the boss slowly with a primary/energy weapon. Some suggestions and comments: It is clear to me that Destiny 2 was entirely remade for PVP, and mainly to try to get around having to fully separate PVE from PVP. And it's failed miserably. Bungie, do you realize that there are a lot o shooters out there that feature generic/standardized combat with no super powers and no incredible, high-tech weaponry? Battlefield, CoD, Halo, Gears, etc. If we wanted that kind of play, we would have been playing THOSE games. Instead, we wanted all the power weapons we had, we wanted the space magic in droves! That is the magic that made Destiny so fun and addicting in the first place. Now I'm aware that your under pressure from Sweaty-McDickface to start remove all those things from the game to make the game "more balanced and competitive" but you have effectively removed all of those things from a game PREDICATED on awesome weaponry and space magic. What do you think is going to keep players coming back? Pretty environments only take you so far. You can have space magic in PVE and PVP for those who love it and a bland PVP experience for Sweaty-McDickface if you want. All you need to do is make ONE, maybe TWO PVP modes where you MUST use standardized gear, trickle is on permanently, and you have "MLG" versions of those maps so that heavy and special ammo doesn't spawn. THERE! Those who want a boring, primary-based PVP experience can have it. Everyone else can enjoy their space magic and power weapons and everyone's happy. NO remake of the entire game necessary. You can call the new mode "Hardcore" mode and the weapon/armor pool for that/those modes can be balanced separately from everything else so what players like TripleWreck want will not have any impact on what the rest of the community wants. Secondly, even with a "hardcore" mode, it is clear you need to separate PVE from PVP. We came to this game for the PVE, not the PVP. I ditched Halo 4 to play Destiny 1 after all! So stop treating us like second or third-priority gamers. We pay the same money that PVP players do, and arguably, we bring in more revenue. PVE players are more likely to recruit new players to this game because PVE content is easier to teach/learn, so it is more accessible to new players. Sweaty-McDickface isn't going to recruit new players to this game - it will take a LONG time for new players to become competent players and assets in PVP. Finally, streamlining skills for the sake of PVP just doesn't work in this game. The advantage of keeping the old style perk tree would be to simply the control scheme, as the Captain America Shield for the sentinal could replace an under-utilized option, like the standard Ward of Dawn you first unlock (no armor/blessings of light). IMO, the "team ability" is just awkward and wasn't all that useful outside the titan's cover deployment - which was more effective in PVP than in PVE. I have so much more to say regarding this topic, but only so much space here, so I'll end with this: Bungie just needs to go back to the D1 system for both Skills and loadouts and separate PVE from PVP. Forget the idiots who say "but then its not a new game!" But even the Halo series has enough commonality between the games to feel familiar and at home, whether you pick up Halo CE or you pick up Halo 5. D2 isn't even the same game - its clearly just your average generic shooter with aliens.

  • Beautifully stated. D2's environments are beautiful, the graphics are awesome, I especially love the new explosion effects and ships at warp. And, I most definitely approve of the new abilities: barriers and rifts and such. But the general gameplay itself has gotten a lot less fun. Clearly, Bungie has chosen to create a game focused on primary gunplay, to the point that our abilities almost might as well not even exist. I actually find myself repeatedly deleting and creating new characters just so I can replay the opening mission, including the sequence on the Tower, where Zavala and other Guardians drop orbs for us. That way, we can have fun spamming space magic. But should I have to do that?

  • Great post, appreciate that you put up some suggestions. I can't possibly comprehend what is so complicated with integrating a simple "hardcore" gamemode rather than bringing the ENTIRE PVP system down to this competitive sillyness. Even COD MW1 did it. Has Atheon sent the PVP team back in time? I agree with just about everything else, except for the weapon system. Granted that our guns DO feel weak, I think the system can work PVE-wise with the right buffs made. It mostly depends on how spongy Bungie intends to make its boss fights, as well as how mechanic-dependent these are.

  • Great read and very fair to Bungie I might add. Can't believe they thought this shit would fly, astonishing.

  • This idiotic new weapons load-out scheme will go down as one of the worst desisions ever made in gaming history.

    • Okay so dont usually write anything but there are some concerns i think everyone is sharing and some appreciation not showing on destiny2 beta. From viewpoint of.. Mainly from crucible quickplay. Mainly titan, mostly sentinel Not in any particular order. 1. Gun loadout system, while it changes things up it just feels awkward. I can get why it was done and also limits the people that like to sit and wait for a clear shot or someone to come by to shoot which im sorry is very annoying but the old system felt better. Though this kinda forces everyone to join the fight and im down with that. Always takes time to get used to something especially when its been a certain way for a while so until we get a look at more weapons and see how they are working we wont know if this is a benefit or if its gonna be a massive downplay from D1. Though i do miss being able to pull out a sniper when im runnin n see someone in the distance. And especially in pve just doesnt seem right at all, even pvp is a lil boring like this. 2. Hard to tell which weapon using. Took some getting used to but still just doesnt feel clear which weapon is which when u go to quickly change between them. Would be nice if it was made clear on screen which loadout or weapon is which for smoother faster switching so you dont have to take a second to think, again probably partly because of loadout switching to two primarys that take a roll in this so maybe something we'll get used to? Tho even a simple 1,2,3 would suffice especially w two primarys to remember now. 3. Supers, Sure its different but thats not always bad or good wtvr u can be a glass half empty kinda guy. If they kept everything the same i would be bored of it already. I like the changes , adds more defensive fights which is good for tight situations and those players who like to sit still have a chance or even for new players its a good intro. Some people see whining about no bubble for sentinel..you get a bubble just hold down super not press it smh. Now they do last longer or at least can use it more times from what ive seen with striker though area of affect is downplayed a lot from D1 and doesnt seem or feel right but hey thats what happens when something is changed, you gotta get used to it. Its not so bad just speed seems off. Tho im severely missing my twilight garrison because once i pop that sentinel super and people step back its hard to close in. Maybe just need to be faster lol but havnt had a problem with speed besides once get that super. Just feels slower, maybe im the only one? I sure hope theres a twilight garrison on D2 cause i like to fly. Sure takes forever to get a super too which in a way i like... yea i know its fun and all to have a bunch of supers going off and i think it should definitely be a lil faster but mostly faster if your getting kills or say making power plays, or in control for example holding or taking control should award you with a super faster or else what the hell are we doing here? They gotta remember those supers are what made a lot of the fun in crucible and in story, strike etc and if they are taking that away that is one.. stupid on their part, supers are a big part of destiny attraction and two.. i came to destiny because i didnt want a strict shooter. 4. Abilities, from the start i loved melee in D1 now feels like its gone down the crapper. Taking 3hits to get a melee kill when someone was already down a bit of health but got used to getting them down more then follow up w a melee, maybe something will be done w that but maybe its a good thing, i did used to melee a lot so its probably good you cant kill people more easily like that. Grenades..suck. Hardly do a thing from what me and friends have seen. Their supposed to be a quick killer or last ditch effort when u got no chance but now ive been just using them as a distraction or have to smartly throw it so they run into it as im shooting but even then doesn't seem to do much maybe that's just sentinel cause others seem a bit better but even a sticky or magnet grenade attatches then falls right off in story and crucible which is weird unless they added a way to shake a grenade off which would be cool i guess..lol is there? The wall for sentinel and the other abilities they added is nice. I hear people whinning about those too but maybe that because i havnt seen too many people using them or even the dodging but that was really smart thing to add been waiting for something like that, appreciate it! 5. Weapon damage, some are just ridiculous especially sniper when used a hunter. I dont kno enough about it and falloff dmg n what else goes into it but that jus seemed odd. Other weapons used seemed pretty legit had to find my flow n weapon i liked to how i play to start racking up the kills but after that seemed pretty good. Heard some people whinning about recoil and how u cant tell guns apart..idk never really paid attention to it but believe it felt a lil diff when i was using pulse n autos n semis so idk what their talking about but maybe im wrong. 6. Armor, a lil different but until theres more to choose from cant really speculate on it. After lookin at it tho, did seem refreshing and a lot easier to mess with but time will tell. 7. Sure ammo in story, strike didnt drop so much and dps n with loadout change to consider theres a lot thats changed and just hope it all comes together seamlessly in the end once D2 comes out. 8. Skill lvl, its a thing people. Hear some people saying have to stick with group cause skill lvl isnt in place and whoever shoots first wins...load of crap. I hardly ever run with my team yet i can usually take on at least 2 to 3 players at a time and win even if im shot at first. My sights stay tuned to their heads and even when people jump to try n get behind you..like im gonna just let u do that lol no eat some bullets. If your dying then you gotta raise your skill. Play some gow in insane, some perfect dark64 without assisted targeting and only get headshots, increase your skill..you cant blame bungie for sucking. Im sure theres others i left out that i wanted to mention but the day calls me. I hope changes are made for the better and lookin forward to release. Whats some of your concerns and appraisals?

    • I actually do agree a lot with you. I think if they release it like this, they will lose a lot of customers. PVE and PVP should be evenly balanced but it seems like they are really focusing on the PVP aspect of it and even that feels broken and I LOVE my PVP! I really hope they rethink what they are doing. I will greatly miss the D1 mechanics

      • Too much text. I'll agree that I was WILDLY underewhelmed and contemplating cancelling preorder, which considering the immoral number of hours I sunk into the first iteration is significant. But, I have to disagree somewhat with the constant criticism that even red bars take to much to kill. The guys with meat cleavers, yes. But pretty much everything else, if you're hitting criticals, dies about as fast as it should. Feels like they may have softened damage on non-crit shots, but that makes crits real rewarding.
