Are you just dumping rounds into the floor? It's not hard to find ammo if you actually kill things.
But whatever if you want to dump more rounds so be it.
i have 88 in reserve and 10 in the mag i can tell you that if i go into strikes without doing anything else first i'll prbly run out of ammo and have to start looking around. if i've already got full ammo mostly i'm fine, thing is though i shouldn't be running out of ammo in my hc anyways. give me about 150 max ammo and then i'll be fine i prbly won't even have to look at it anymore to see if i can keep shooting or if i should use a special and try to drop some.
While it is no less true: Some tips to use in the mean time!
Use High Impact Cannons!
High impact hand cannons usually carry no less ammo than any other, but can 1-hit kill a slightly wider range of targets, or kill targets slightly out of range of a one-shot for a med impact cannon.
Only gripe is that most high impact cannons are locked behind PvP, not legendary, or locked/lost to Y1. Getting one my prove challenging.
Side note: Rifle Barrel on these canons is almost a waste! Instead, get Hammer Forged. Only Ill Will hits max range with just Hammer forged, but the rest get quite close regardless, and it lets you not have to sacrifice stability or Reload speed for only a couple extra steps of range falloff and accuracy.
The Currently available: Lingering Song (Iron Banner), Ill Will (Random Crucible Drop), First Curse (Gunsmith rank 5 quest), and the Judith-D (Gunsmith package).
Explosive rounds can help you save ammo in PvE!
But how does that work? a few ways!
Deal AoE damage, every two or three shots could kill a free enemy if they're clustered.
50% bonus damage against shields and body shots. This means a couple things.
-Less shots to burn through enemy shields.
-Some enemies that wouldn't die to single body shot before now will.
-Helps burn through Minotaurs in particular! ('cause they have no crit spots).
They also usually do slightly extra bonus damage on precision hit. depending on enemy; anywhere between 5 and 12%. Can turn a "Just survived that" into a "just killed that". The only time it's a loss of damage is against the Bond Brothers, a least that I've seen.
Last point, they also help reduce damage falloff. Unforetunately, they can't be accomponied by a range boosting perk (In most cases, see suggested hand cannons!), but the explosion half of the damage from explosive rounds is not penalized by range, and always deals it's full damage.
Firefly for mobs!
Well, if your blowing up ONE guy, turning him into a living grenade and causing his corpse to kill and/or damage his allies? means against a mob your probably going to be using less shots to kill them all, hence ammo saved. (Disclaimer: Explosive rounds do not play well with perks that trigger on precision hit, 'cause even if the killing shot went straight into something's face if it's the explosion damage that kills the target, precision perk won't trigger).
Triple Tap: Duh!
Basically the best PvE perk ever. Pseudo extention of magazine by slipping free bullets that come out of nowhere into you magazine?
Suggested Legendary Cannon?
Probably the Lingering Song.
Why? Because it can roll with BOTH a range boosting perk AND Explosive rounds AND triple Tap.
Less falloff, more accuracy, and effectively two ammo saving perks.
Like most IB weapons, a lot of the garbage perks have been removed (looking at you, Exhumed!). Even if you don't get the most ammo efficient cannon, you might get something else just overall useful! Like say High Calibur rounds (stuns majors like a dream, and despite the perk description it doesn't lower handling, but it does increase range a tad, if you went for/got Hammerforged instead making it have a total of 60 range 2 shy of max), a range boosting perk of your choice and Firefly. That's still quite a handy roll!
First Curse basically doesn't have ammo issue!
Between having triple tap and refilling your ammo on your first precision kill per mag, AND a higher than normal base ammo? Ammo galor.
If you still find yourself running out of ammo with it, you can get a lot more milage by for the first 3/4's of the magazine killing with body shots, then using the last couple shots to get a precision kill. This will effectively, straight up give you an extra 6 shots per magazine.
The only issue: Consumes your exotic slot! Not a bad weapon when Juggler is on, or Smallarms, but sometimes you might prefer a special or heavy exotic to get out some more ompph.
Hope that helps anyone trying to use cannons in PvE.
The Lingering Song holds just over 100 (8 in the mag and 98 in reserve). It's the same high impact archetype as The First Curse and Judith-d.
I got one from a rank up package during the first ROI Iron Banner. It dropped with rifled barrel, ER, and firefly / hidden hand. It's on my warlock. My favorite PvE hand cannon by far. Sounds awesome too.
Step 1: Equip hand cannon with high 'inventory stat'
Step 2: Equip chest piece with Hand Cannon Ammo
Step 3: Equip heavy with surplus perk
Then proceed and wreak havok on everything that moves, you have over 100 reserve ammo and pick up 50 every brick.
You are welcome
PvE ammo system is a bloody mess and has been for quite some time. Just another portion of the game screwed by PvP. Bungie never could differentiate between game modes. Limiting special and heavy ammo makes sense for PvP. PvE is made needlessly tedious by having to rely on ammo packs with ridiculous cool downs. I've gone whole strikes and missions without touching a heavy weapon because of how stingy ammo drop rate is. I don't get why they wouldn't just have reserve ammo be relatively the same for primary weapons, regardless of weapon type.
They've always needed this.......or bungie needs to increase the amount of AMMO DROPS......pretty sad when you run out of ALL THREE ammo types on just a patrol!!!!
Run around long enough without ammo and the game MIGHT give you more out of, my group calls it mercy ammo.......if the game has to do that there should be ammo dropping from every add
In most activities I don't have any problems with hand cannons ammunitions. Especially if I'm using heavy hitting cannon like Lingering Song. Even Imago work just fine. The only problem is Nightfall with Juggler modifier.
