Reinstate Re-forging at Gun Smith

Attempting to obtain feedback from the community on reinstating the ability to re-forge (re-roll) weapons at the Gun Smith. In my opinion, reforging weapons at the gun smith, for even 15 legendary marks and some materials, would not be game-breaking. There are numerous benefits and advantages to reinstating this option, for which in my opinion, exceed the costs and disadvantages of reinstating it. Edit #1: I appreciate all of the comments and participation. It is obviously completely my opinion to reinstate reforging, but I believe it is at least a topic which should be discussed by the player base. I am fairly certain the community will generally be divided on almost ever topic related to Destiny, but I think there are opportunities for consensus. I am seeing a lot of thoughtful comments that support reinstating the ability to reforge weapons, but I have not seen a significant number of valid reasons for it not to be reinstated. Edit #2: I just checked my phone at work and we are trending. I do not post often on the forums, but it is satisying to read some of the discussions taking place within the post. I appreciate everyone's participation and comments to the poll! Edit #3: I just got home from work and saw we moved up closer to the top on the trending list, and there are some nice discussions taking place within the post. The activity is bound to slow down sometime with Trials and other activities in Destiny, but we can still hold out hope for those at work, school, or away from the console to respond! Edit #4: We are almost to the top and still trending! It is rewarding to read and review all of the high-quality posts and comments from members of this great community! I sincerely appreciate everyone taking the time to participate and comment on the post! Edit# 4: Added this edit to highlight one of the most well-written comments (replies) within this post. The comment is by MenkusKhan, from yesterday, December 9. It has been "bumped" several times, so it is not far from the top at this point. The player's comment is thoughtful, well-written, and contains a number of valid reasons for the reinstatement of reforging. I can always quote it within an edit if anyone has trouble viewing it. I sincerely appreciate MenkusKhan's time and effort he took to comment, as well as anyone else who took the time to comment, regardless of what your opinion is on this topic. Edit #5: So apparently someone illegally accessed my PSN account and sent an unauthorized mass message from my account with derogatory language in it. It is disappointing and pathetic that someone would go to such effort considering this is a video game and people are just discussing a topic. I apologize if any of you received such the message.

    • The main argument I'm seeing here against reforging is that it would kill weapon diversity. This is paired with the assumption that reforging was cheap back in the day and a snide "just look at year one." The thing is, though, year one had massive diversity within legendary weapons. Shortly after the pulse rifle meta, Destiny saw a period in which you could really use almost any weapon archetype and do well. Pulse rifles had the Hopscotch Pilgrim and 55A-Allfate, hand cannons had the Fulcrum, Timur's Lash, Red Hand, Lord High Fixer, I'll Will, scouts had the Badger CCL, One/One Synthesete, and Deadshot Luna, and auto rifles had the Vanquisher VIII, Shadow Price, even shotguns had Felwinter's, Party Crasher, Matador, and Two to the Morgue, and snipers had multiple options from high impact to high rate of fire. Reforging didn't decrease weapon variety, it increased it. Before HoW, people used mostly raid weapons and exotics for crucible because raids were the only way to guarantee that you would get a legendary with a good roll. With the advent of reforging, regular legendary weapons really took the stage for the first time. It was no longer about how easy it was to get a certain weapon with a good roll, it was how well that weapon felt, since every archetype had perks that could make it do better depending on how you like to play. Yes, there were certain builds for weapons that people liked more than others, but that's no different from the situation we have now. The reason you see Matador and Clever Dragon so much right now is because those are the two easiest weapons to get that fit the meta and have good perks. In our current system, if I like FWC's The Waltz more than I like Clever Dragon, there's nothing much that I can do about it because the chances of getting a well rolled Waltz from FWC rank ups is extremely slim, whereas I could just buy a well rolled Clever Dragon from Efrideet. The Waltz, the weapon I would rather be using, is then never obtained because I have the next best thing. Besides the fact, reforging sparked a whole new sense of creativity in the community. Legendary hand cannons, while viable in the meta, didn't really shine until somebody experimented with the Fulcrum and found that LITC worked very well on it coupled with perks that reduced magazine size, and suddenly hand cannons were seen a lot more, since other hand cannons were also candidates for the "mini-hawkmoon" roll. A similar thing happened with the Hopscotch Pilgrim, which remained a decently rare gun until the end of HoW. To those arguing that reforging would give everyone God rolls on everything, you clearly don't remember the weapon part drought of late House of Wolves. Reforging was never extremely cheap considering how many times you would have to reforge something in order to get what you want. I remember spending over 50 motes of light and hundreds upon hundreds of weapon parts in order to get a good roll for just one gun. With materials being much easier to come by now, the cost would have to be increased; I like the idea of using Legendary Marks as a reforging material. Reforging didn't reduce the grind, it increased it and made it feel much more rewarding. The people who played the game more and collected more materials had better rolls on some, not all, of their weapons, and that's how it should be. Not only that, the ability to reforge weapons added a huge amount of game time to House of Wolves, and I believe it's one of the reasons people look back at House of Wolves so fondly. After reforging one weapon to the point where it worked just how you wanted it, you could move on to the next one and build a whole collection of your favorite weapons. Now people tend to get the easiest thing to get with the best roll for their effort and are done with it. Perhaps the strongest point for bringing back reforging, though, is that it led to a sense of accomplishment and ownership of each weapon in a player's arsenal. Even now, when I break out my Fulcrum in the occasional PVP match, I can't help but smile knowing that everything about that gun is mine; I leveled up FWC to buy the frame, I spent hours collecting the materials for it, and, after months of reforging it and keeping it ready just in case, finally got my perfect roll, leveled it up to unlock the nodes, and fought Skolas in order to ascend it to the highest light level it could be. That is what ownership feels like, not just finding it off of the ground or in a chest. I still want a high rate of fire scout with full auto and explosive rounds.

why not I guess let everyone have 2 tap handcannons and god roll matadors see how acid the meta becomes since everyone already has high caliber round clever dragons

        • Personally I don't want reforging back. With reforging, both by the gunsmith and year 1's iron banner everyone had (for the most part) the same perks. For example all shotguns has shotpackage/rangefinder and hammer forged. Another example could be snipers that were rolled to have final round. In my experience, I had more fun playing, until I got well rolled weapons like the 'eyasluna' or '1k yard' than I did getting a single 'her benevolence' and automatically getting the "perfect roll".

As much as I'd like a max range Matador, no. If everyone has the best rolls on a weapon, that'd mean that no one would. --- Let's say you had an Xbox Elite controller that you bought with your own money, which meant that you had an advantage over others that just had a stock controller. Let's say that Microsoft gave a promo that would allow everyone to get an Elites for free. Your advantage would be lost because now everyone has what you had, so you're advantage over others is gone. Remember, this is just my feeling of this. This is not Bungie's opinion.

I would rather have re-forging for gear. Weapon drops, for me at least, drop with decent rolls more then half the time. I finally got the The Distant Star and it drop with brace frame, explosive rounds and range finder. Do I get stinkers drops on weapons, yes, but it seems my gear drop percentage (Intellect, Strenght, Discipline) sucks more than weapons.

              • It'd be nice but it would make Skeleton Keys completely useless after you get the roll you want. And it would make strikes pointless if you didn't have to grind for Skeleton Keys. There's no point if we can get whatever roll we want. On top of that, everyone running around with God-Rolls would make them less special, and they wouldn't be a big deal any more. The chase is always more exciting than the catch, especially when in Destiny no matter what God Roll you get it's not as good as you thought, then you drop it into the Vault. We could make it so each weapon could have only 5 rerolls then it's done, or 1 or 2 times a week, that'd be good.

              • I think it would be balanced if you could reroll one perk and the rest would lock but not the entire weapon.

              • No. You say there are numerous benefits and advantages to reinstate this option. That's the problem right there, all it is beneficial and advantageous. Why doesn't anyone want to grind for their shit anymore and just have everything handed to them!?

                  • I would rather have the ability to pick 1 node at a time and select a different perk on its place but it would be from a consumable that is either very hard to come buy or takes a long time to purchase. I'm fed up of having a nearly perfect roll and being off by 1 single perk. Yeah rerolling was ok but I'd rather we get to perfect an item rather than just rerolling a hundred times. It would certainly stop people getting God rolls instantly but still alow people to get what they want but by making the consumable something hard to get it makes the process something you have to earn.

                  • The only reason y I would want this back is because I'm tired of going after the same weapon over and over again because the one I get doesn't have the perks I want. It's a constant loop and it gets annoying.

                      • Destiny 2 needs to allow weapon customization instead of random 're roll. Basically make ever "perk node" into a mod slot and every "perk" into an item. When you acquire a weapon it would have no perks but you could then put almost any perk into any slot to make your perfect weapon. Or it could come with perks that you would need to erase. The only requisite is that you have obtained the perk in some way previously. Maybe have a crafting skill that needs to be leveled. This could also include element nodes and special raid nodes. Maybe you could make a gun with cocoon and oracle disruptor.
