The Value of Feedback

If you’re reading this, you’re a part of our creative process at Bungie. The players have always been our partners at Bungie. It’s my job to make sure that continues to be true – more than ever before. I see a lot of questions about what happens behind closed doors in our studio. I want to share some information with you about how Feedback is gathered here. Some of you have wondered what happens when great ideas or important issues are posted here on the Feedback forum. When I first started as your Community Manager, I would send targeted feedback to specific developers. For example: When the community was reporting problems with Ogres teleporting, I sent your reports directly to the Raid team. That issue was later fixed in a patch. I'm not taking any credit for that. The community identified the problem, and the Raid team made the fix. I still do this direct messaging whenever it makes sense, but my reports have evolved overtime. I was asked to create a general report about the Destiny community, including the overall sentiment, hot topics of discussion, and requests for changes/additions to the game. The bulk of those insights are sourced right here on this forum. I initially sent these reports to the creative leadership. A few months ago, I was asked by Pete (CEO) to expand the audience to include everyone at Bungie. Now, you may be asking "Why don't you give us regular reports of the status of our requests?" It can be complicated to comment on development work until an update or a hot fix is certified and ready to go. Game design is too turbulent to support public promises. Early ideas and plans are like sea turtles hatching on the beach. Many of them will never find their way to the sea. If there is a good idea on the forum, odds are it may have lived and died on one of our whiteboards. Or, it could even be in some stage of development. The best promises we can make about these things come in the form of patch notes – once they’ve made it into the water. There are millions of players that all have various opinions on what Destiny should be. There are also hundreds of developers who have various opinions on what Destiny should be. It's not easy sorting through both sets to come up with final decisions, but we like including your feedback in the process, and appreciate you taking the time to share it with us. If you keep sharing your ideas and opinions with us, I’ll keep working to build that bridge between you and the people who make the things you love. You’re the most important part of what we do, and there are more people listening to what you say now more than ever. Keep it up!

    • If true then how many posts about the lack of Matchmaking for Nightfall and CoE do you guys need before you realize it's an issue. Saw way more of those before any mention was made about allot of other things. How many posts do you need before ppl realize that Sunsingers are now severely under powered for PvP and PvE? AR nerfs were blasted yr one.. nothing for almost what 6 months? Then buffed by .04% only to be nerfed again? Fusion bolts despawn upon death. Nerfs to ammo Snipers ....so many Snipers... yet everything useful to counter them? Nerfed... So much feedback on that ... What do we get? Trials reports and Crucible numbers that are used to make GAME WIDE changes? We give a ton of feedback. It just seems that Bungie only listens to what they want to hear. Address these topics in a real Weekly update... Why wont they happen? What's holding them back? Don't say the "wish list" either. Been here to long to know that's only to plecate the masses. Just look at that list.. real suggestions made.. no follow up on about 85% of it.

        Perhaps just tell us which turtles are making the best best progress towards that ocean. Tell us which turtles seem to be a little confused about which way to go. And tell us the sad tales of the turtles which never left the egg, we can handle it. Even the hopeless turtles had a story to tell, however tragic it may be.         • My respect for you went up a few notches. I think this was a very well redacted response and I think (just my opinion) that this was a response the community had been waiting to receive for a while. [/quote] I agree with your statement here. I would like to add that I feel some of the frustration players have/had is when there is no clear distinction on how or if the feedback provided is being passed on. I am inclined to believe you when you indicate that you do relay the feedback to the developers, although it is sometimes hard to do so when contradicting statements or broken promises are made. I think if the feedback provided was broken down into two categories, wish list and current issues, it will be easier to address these things in a way that the community won't be as frustrated as it currently is/was. I think if things are working the way they are/were intended to do, it will be easier for the community to wait or be more tolerant of other issues while they are being addressed or enhancements are made to the game introducing some of those items on the wish list. This is just my opinion and I am one in a sea of many. Once again, excellent job on this post.

          OK, here's some feedback from me - Sterling Treasure: Drops need a tweak, i've not had a single Spektar Warlock Bond since the April Update first brought them in. I've opened many of these on my Warlock and i've had one desolate bond and a lot of spektar cloaks/marks but not a single spektar bond! For an item you charge real money for, it's a bit lame to have such a high level of repeated drops. Ships/Shaders/Emblems: PLEASE fix these! Amanda hasn't sold half her rare ships either ever, or not since early Year 1! The requirements to have the opportunity for Scarab Heart to drop in Trials is far too insane to be a pure RNG drop. You have confirmed there is a bug with packages not rewarding stuff properly like New Monarchy ships, I've not had any of the Shaxxfall ships/Kingspyre and i've done his bounties pretty much every week since TTK week 1 when I unlocked them. Also, strike shaders/emblems don't seem to drop, especially some of the year 1 shaders! On a side note, why was there no Festival Of The Lost emblem/shader? What about an Eververse shader/emblem for loyal customers? Drop rates: Drop rates overall are pretty lame. Strikes, Crucible and Level 41 PoE giving you just a blue ghost shell and a mote is not worth the time. Variks keeps giving me Crows Eye + class items, rather than weapons (Still don't have Soulstealers Claw!). Strike exclusive loot is TOO rare. I've only ever had 1 imago loop and I still haven't had the Taniks cloak or the Echo Chamber gauntlets (amongst other things) and I can't tell you how many times i've run those strikes at all levels to grind for them! Drop rates for the Year 1 weapons you brought forward are terrible, especially when they do finally drop but with a really crappy roll. Vault of Glass/Crota's End: Rise of Iron is clearly the closing chapter to Destiny 1, before the full sequel shows up, so there's no reason for these 2 year 1 raids can't be brought in line with current light levels. Someone had a great idea (I think on Reddit) of using the Exo Stranger to host an event where we had to "go back and change history" by doing some old story missions/strikes culminating in one of the old raids. This would make them relevant, allow us to use the gear again and bring back old strikes like the Nexus Mind. It would also be a good time to give us a VoG emblem! SRL: Bring it back and all the gear too. Maybe some new tracks and sparrows? Storage: We need more vault space! It also puzzles me how you gave us 17 Halloween masks to collect, but didn't implement a way for us to store them outside our vault! I spent actual money on packages to get glue/blue skull mask and you didn't put "Eva's Toy Chest" or something in to retrieve our masks. You only put the 'Happy' horn in the sparrow kiosk, there was nowhere to store our Level 0/3 racing gear and you only recently allowed us to reacquire the Momentum SRL gear from Tess! The kiosks also could do with a major sorting too, why is Dreg's Promise with the sniper rifles but Patience & Time is with the shotguns? Where is the Year 1 Apotheosis Veil helmet in the Warlock kiosk? We also need a way to get back our special gear, like the subclass class items and weapons like Stillpiercer. A vendor that sells armour materials would be nice too. Theatre mode: A way to view all cutscenes and DLC promo cinematics. I would also like to be able to make a 4th character. Apart from frustrating drop rates, space constraints and crucible lag/cheaters, I still enjoy this game and I am really looking forward to Rise of Iron. Hopefully we'll see some great quality of life improvements and continued adjustments to the crucible before then, however.

            This is good Cosmo. A little outreach on your your end (like this) will go a long way. I would like to see it more often. Any information you can pass along is a good thing. EDIT: after reading some of the replies here it's sad to see when Cosmo and deej make a effort it's used against them. Trying to box someone in will only serve to make them talk less.

              WOW. People are super hostile towards Bungie staff apparently. I'm glad you cleared this up, Comzo, thank you. But really? If you people get upset because you of something you said or think not being implemented into the game, maybe it wasn't voiced loud enough? or maybe it would fit properly with statistics or wouldn't help add to Destiny. I feel that everyone here plays this game, enjoys this game to some extent, and whats the game to be as good as it can be. So instead of getting mad, as some users do, just try to be polite when asking the reasoning behind, for example, the gunslinger changes. Edit: Okay, so i poorly worded my post. I'm not saying i'm completely fine with whatever bungie does, I'm trying to people to not attack anybody who doesn't agree with them or change the game the way the want. TD;LR: Please be nicer to people. Everybody. (to lazy to respond to everybody anymore.)

There are many of us who do appreciate what you do and what everyone at Bungie has given us. Destiny is a great game with gameplay that's second to none.                   Honestly, I just want to see more of these "stats" that you guys are compiling and looking at on a regular basis. Remember when that graph was posted before the last balancing patch that showed the K/Ds of each subclass? I want to see more of that. There should be reason why we have to go to third party sites to see data like this.

                    • Thanks for this explanation Cosmo. I think part of the frustration this community experiences is the fact that the Dev's don't seem all that responsive to our concerns, or even worse, that they seem to go against our desires time and time again. Example? Most of us are on board with a complete separation of PVP from PVE in terms of balancing, and yet each patch released seems to apply one balance to both modes. While this is useful, I think what could be useful is for someone to take a few minutes to explain why ideas, such as full separation of PVP/PVE aren't being implemented. If they considered an idea, but they can't make it work in this rendition of Destiny, then we need to know that as well. I think that is part of the lack of communication from Bungie that people are upset about. We bring forward a lot of good ideas here on the forums, and even ones with LOTS of support seem to get overlooked. It would be helpful to know that the idea was considered, debated behind closed doors, but due to some limitations with software, etc., they didn't believe they could make it work with this version of Destiny. That may not satisfy everyone, but at least we can take some comfort in knowing our ideas made it to the drawing board. On that note though, I see no reason why we can't make our primary weapons have elemental burns. We had them in Y1, and with infusion and chroma, I see no reason why we couldn't have 3 different items available to add arc, solar, or void burns to our favorite kinetic weapons... I'm just sayin....

                      Thank you for that. I can appreciate your role evolving as Pete clearly sees value in it. We haven't signed an NDA or work for Bungie. So, we get it. However, why don't you recap, from your perspective, what the hottest issues are? That way, we can feel validated or like you're listening to us. It would cut down on the toxicity here, I think. Finally, for Pete's sake, why can't we just have our y1 gear back? At the very least, allow us to upgrade it to year 2 only. Please, provide some sort of acknowledgment or answer. I think we deserve it. Thank you.

                      • As far as the big picture goes I'm still waiting for the fulfillment of the idea of bringing players together naturally to tackle challenges. That and an activity for every mood. The key being patrol, which is in need of some heavy refinement and attention. As well as destiny's social features.
