Why is it that the electron and proton have equal and opposite charges and yet have such a massive difference in total mass?
-
2 답변Charge and mass literally have nothing to do with each other. It's like saying "Why are bananas yellow but male sea horses carry their young in their tummy?"

7 답변Basically, no one knows yet. If they didn't have identical charges though, electromagnetism would be the dominant force in the universe instead of gravity and the universe as we know it wouldn't exist.

6 답변Probably due to some insanely small particle inside one or the other that our best microscope isn't even close to being able to see yet. Or not. Who knows?

1 답변I don't think there's an actual scientific reason for it other than "That's the way it is."

6 답변A little bit ago, I had the idea that a neutron is just a proton that somehow collided and combined with an electron to become neutral. This is just my own hypothesis with absolutely no evidence to back this up, and no way to test it.

1 답변작성자: Masshole 1/14/2016 5:40:20 AMI've seen models of protons, electrons, and neutrons and always wondered why the electrons were smaller. But I'm not studying science anymore, let alone...quantum physics? Physics physics? I don't know; good luck with your journey for discovery.

2 답변작성자: Alpha 1/15/2016 8:41:18 AMBecause Proton is made of 3 quarks. But electron is not. But you already knew about that, right?

2 답변I used to know this, but haven't taken general chemistry since 2011. Guess it wasn't worth remembering lol. I mean I didn't use it in my analytical chemistry class last semester which was a 300 level class, so yea.

8 답변I'm not smart enough to know the answer to this so I'm just going to assume it's because the electron was the runt of the litter, but one hell of a fighter.

2 답변Well as you see a negative sign is 1 line: - And a positive sign is 2 lines: + So more lines equals more mass
