Because its an easy visual indicator. Is it 100% accurate? No. Have people used it since the dawn of fps and will people probably always use it? Yes. Unless you expect people to watch montages of all your games than how else do you expect them to judge? I mean even if we had halos true skill system with ranks then you would see this same topic about why do people use rank to judge someone's skills etc etc.

Iv been denied playing with a team in trials because my k/d was a flat 1.0 after going from 2.7 the previous weekend I even had proof and they still didn't let me in... This week my kd dropped so hard on all 3 Titan was: 1.6 Warlock was: 2.4 Hunter was: 2.7 Now there all at 1.0 - 1.3... :((

If you were playing people of your skill level, you would be lucky to break 1.2.

I have a friend below 1.0 and he's great he just doesn't focus on winning so often, as he constantly changes loadout Also for trials i look at the amount of kills, I'd much rather have somebody with 10,000 kills and a 1.0 , then somebody with a 5.0 who's only played 20 crucible games

KD alone doesn't tell the whole story, but combined with other stats too you can tell if someone is good at the game or not. KD simply measures how reckless/careful you are on its own, which is not a full indication of skill. There is a guy who has an 8.05 KD in the game. Do you know how? He goes into Skirmish/Salvage with a full fireteam, then he sits back with a Final Round until the heavy comes along. Once it does, his team gets both heavies and then he runs around with a Field Scout Jolders until the end of the game. That's not skill and if you played that way against top players they would rush the shit out of you and demolish you completely. However, if you take KD, medals, winrate, combat rating, score per game, etc, then you get a much better approximation of someone's skill. If you happen to be one of the rare few that play a support role or is always making good plays but just doesn't get the kill (for example when teamshooting) then KD is a very bad way to judge. I absolutely can relate to the whole thing about previously sucking and now being much better. Since Destiny was my first real FPS that I played multiplayer in, I started with a 0.65 KD. Now it's at 1.11 even though my weekly KD average is 1.5 because that's actually the level at which I play. Also some people frequently do challenges and such for entertainment which will handicap them and hence their stats will not be as optimized as someone who just plays for KD. I can camp the whole game with Final Round and I will probably get a high KD, but I would rather go 24-7 than go 7-1 even though the latter has the higher KD.

The argument of not trying is silly, what would be the point if you're not playing to win. It's a competitive mode.

Well because high K/D players provide more point than they give to the enemy team. So a full team of positive K/D should be a guaranteed win. Unless it's something like CTF of Salvage.

Kd tells nothing hanging around in obscure places in a control match will get your kd high. To many kd wannabes wont play for the win its all about kd sad really I will take a win over kd every time

I don't have over a 1.1 in trials but I can have games where I die once, or not at all.. I had 2 11-3 games last night, but it all depends.. I usually do pretty good, but I know why it's not over a 1.1.. I think it's a 1.05?

It kinda does show how much skill you have. Of course you can still be good with a bad KD but KD's do show how skilled a player is. I'd say a 1.5 and up is a pretty skilled player. 3.0 and up is kinda rediculous.

I just ask simply for a positive KD and mic in trials if I'm with randoms so it's a smooth run and not a waste of passage coins :/

Mainly because destiny has almost NO objective based game modes that actually count for something. Halo had some; and in that if someone had terrible k/d it could mean that they were flag runner or ball holder. Destiny has nothing like that unfortunately.

Because the more skilled players tend to have higher Kd you won't be able to tell much from 1.1 to say 1.3 But if someone has played 1000 games with a 0.8 average, and someone else is at 1.8, that says something..

It means you kill more then die. Killing equals points for your team. Dying scores for the other team. I'd rather play with people with a positive kdr and score for my team then someone who is negative and giving the other team their points.

The only people who care about other people's kd are the ones that care about their own. Then, there are those of us who really don't care about kd. We play with 'weak' loadouts, different playstyles, and different gear just because it's what we enjoy. For example, I SUCK at sniping, but that doesn't stop me from equipping NLB for shits & giggles from time to time. Some people enjoy number crunching, some don't. If it's not your cup of tea, then move along and ignore the haters.
