They're sort of changing that up though. Story is getting a makeover supposedly to be 'better'.
Strikes are apparently related to the Taken War storyline and have mechanics now except for the Echo Chamber strike which is a PSN exclusive.
But as I said earlier in another post, they have to nail the story right now.
From what I learnt from interviews, apparently everything is a lot more connected than how it was in Vanilla and other DLCs. But then again, this is all speculation. I have no idea how it actually will turn out.

You helped strengthen the cities ties to the reef in HoW. (Maybe) The stranger tells you about Oryx (Vanilla). Oryx shows up angrily to avenge his son. (DB) The reef helps you get on the dreadnaught (HoW). You kill Oryx (TTK). Its all starting to makes sense.

Yeah, they did say something about how Vanilla and TDB + HoW stories will be linked. So after you complete the Sword of Crota mission, it takes you to TDB storyline. So yeah, interested to see how that will play out. Once TTK hits, I'm deleting my Hunter and restarting it and then use the buff we get to gain a lot levels and play story again from the start.
