Gotta say the responses here contradict that.
Thorn is the most popular weapon, but it's far from the only weapon.

You know as well as I do, the minute people start Iron banana its gonna be full on Thorn and blinking shotties. I would love to believe everybody that hasn't chosen those guns will use what they claim in this thread but at some point they will be forced to switch to the same ol same ol like we all have had to do.

I got 2 characters to IB rank 5 and one to rank 3 last IB, and while thorn was indeed popular, I have to say that Bungie's recently released stats match my own experience - thorn was used about 25% of the time, which means 1 or 2 thorns on the enemy team most games. Not a huge issue for me. Glad it's being nerfed though.

Red death is a beast if there is no lag and its all headshots. The health refill can be a lifesaver at times too. I've never complained about being taken out with Red Death. It's not a point and click weapon....it has to be aimed and some skill to pop off those slow pulse rates.

Would of been a nice meele weapon as well (which I think at some point it was envisioned that way possibly) with that big ol bloody blade sticking out from it, but either way the gun is very cool and original with the red crossbones sight.
