One of the shortfalls of Destiny's story is that it's barren of in depth characters with meaningful interaction. There isn't a strong cast with interesting personalities and motivations and most importantly character arcs. It's a far cry from the Rich Cinematic Storytelling promised on the box and advertising material.
To illustrate this, try applying the Plinkett Test to the character's of Destiny. The Plinkett Test measures the strength of a character by the amount of descriptors assigned to them not relating to superficial aspects or roles. In other words, longer you can go on describing a character without saying what they look like, what they wear or what they do, the stronger that character is.
For example :
Cortana from Halo: doesn't trust easy but is loyal, she's extremely curious and easily distracted. She's very sarcastic and playful and has a vicious side of provoked. She's sentimental and extremely intelligent and analytical.
The problem is the character's from Destiny do very little other than stand on the spot and sell you things. They don't interact or develop or have appealing and describable traits. Prove me wrong, apply the Plinkett Test and find out for yourself.
Edit: and don't misinterpret me as saying Halo's characters are the epitome of strong characters, I'm just comparing Bungie's last franchise to Destiny. Halo is pretty formulaic, pulpy sci-fi.

6 답변I think at this point in time we're all aware that Destiny is not a story-based game, at least not primarily. Some games are all about the story. The Last of Us is a good example of that archetype. That game had probably the best story ever in a game. That story could easily be a movie with no changes at all. Beyond the story, its a pretty average third-person action/adventure game. You're not playing that game for the shooter mechanics, you play it to see how the story turns out (and its totally worth it for that!) Destiny is a game that excels as a shooter/loot hunting game. The story is only ever going to be there as a way to tie the missions/strikes/raids together and that's it. I know people like to point at the "rich, cinematic story-telling" quote on the game box and laugh. Sure, what little story moments we got looked beautiful and were quite cinematic, but that's about all you can say about them. But that's not what this game is about. So yeah, if you're playing Destiny and expecting a high-quality story with strong characters, you are going to be disappointed. There are many games out there whose first priority is story. Destiny is not one of them. If you want a slick FPS that you can play with your friends while shooting aliens (or each other) in the face and collecting sweet loot, Destiny is the game for you. People need to accept that story is not (nor likely ever will be) the highlight of this game/franchise.

4 답변Imo, Variks was a strong character. So was Petra, out of any one in the game both of them had some back story explained as well as great voice acting.

2 답변I'm pretty sure the Bungie staff who left while Destiny was being made ran off with the only copies of the storyline they had. They came up with the grimoire cards using the post-it notes that the writer left behind after making a break for safety. Bungie did the same thing Bioware did with Mass Effect: get rid of the writer and destroy the story so nothing makes sense (though with Bioware they ignored 2 games worth of storyline).

Destiny lacks strong characters?? Son, my name here is Crowley, after the king of Hell, and my gamertag is HULK, as in the Incredible Hulk. On top of that, we have a Traveler who goes nowhere, a Speaker who rarely says shit, a Ghost who is actually a robot, and a Stranger whose essentially our only real friend. "Destiny lacks strong characters." Pfft. Puh-leeze!

I can't think of anyone who'd try to prove you wrong. It's just a fact. One could argue that most MMO-like games have this flaw, but even other MMOs allow you to team up with NPCs, and involve storylines that flesh out their characters. Destiny is entirely devoid of emotional detachment, its basically an arcade shooter.

i totally agree, they couldve easily thrown more story in, like you should be able to become close friends with your vanguard through doing story missions and side missions with them as a part of your fireteam, and they should actually get more of a backstory and so on and so forth

Destiny is beta test for Destiny 2. There is a lot they could have learned from this. Have they, time will tell. Some of the story stuff could have been handled like most Bioware stuff lately: we won't bore you with the details, but if you want them, there is a codex IN GAME with all the stuff you want. The Destiny cards seem like an attempt to drive up hits on a website, nevermind poor design. There had to be way more to this at one time. The voice actors used throughout are fairly decent actors, so why have them say like 3 lines? They could have saved a crap load of cash by having a couple interns do the voices. You pay for quality if you are going to use them more than, "Hey guardian". Listen to what the ghost says. It is some of the worst audio splicing I have ever heard. The actor is frankly not that bad. However, if you say a couple sentences, then hack and slash it, anyone will sound bad.

Well the difference between Halo and Destiny is that you are constantly hearing from Cortana and MC, especially in the newer additions. Destiny has so many characters that only a few have been well developed so far. But I wouldn't go as far as to say that there are no characters with depth. Those who know the lore behind Eris realize she is more than just a vendor. Her deep hate for the Hive stems from her watching not only the death of 1000s of Guardians on the Moon at the hands of Crota, but also her witness of the individual deaths of her Fireteam. These were her friends and most suffered slow deaths by torture or just on the brink of escape before being slaughtered, all of which she saw. Not only this but she also had to hide in Hive warrens and cut herself away from the light, what she viewed as the only thing that made her a Guardian. Her secretive nature and enigmatic way of speaking derives from her having spent years in isolation from others and having to deceive the Hive. But she still returned to the Last City to avenge her friends, having the character you play as do it for her. I think that there are definitely some strong characters, or rather well developed characters, the problem is only a few have been elaborated upon in depth, and mostly in the Grimoire. Bungie needs to add Ghost fragments for many of the vendors around the Tower and Reef with tTK if they truly want to flesh them out.

8 답변I really want Destiny TTK or 'Destiny 2' to have a good story, to have decent quests, and to have integrated lore, memorable characters. Destiny has nailed the combat and gun fights, and VoG was a work of art! One massive problem for me is grimoire. I like the concept of it, however, it is our only official source of lore. I wanted grimoire to be additional lore (If it had to be implemented), not the entirety of it. Also the only characters that ever come to my mind are: Variks; nice little story about him in HoW Petra Venj; same as Variks And Rahool; blues for legendaries anyone? I also found it weird that an ex-Halo dev who developed splitscreen (and I want to grab a 360 just for Halo:Reach splitscreen) in previous games didnt even add one mode, in a co-op centered game, that had splitscreen.

4 답변작성자: RichyWoo 7/20/2015 4:13:16 PMI honestly think Bungie are reluctant to use their best ideas on DESTINY version 1. They are just teasing us with glimpses of characters that are going to break out in a big way later on and draw departed players back into the mythos.

1 답변in no way has destiny given what it has promised for the story but if i think of other mmo based games they dont either. the nature of replaying story missions many times makes it difficult to put massive story in without it getting boring. I wish the first run through had much more cinematics and character development and then the subsequent times that part was cut out to what we have now

The game doesn't even give us a story in the first place, so asking for more in-depth character and character backgrounds BEFORE we get an in-game story is a bit much. If what was in the grimoire was in the game, it would have great fleshed out story lines, background for characters, and even race histories.
