What Is Destiny, what were we sold, and was it worth it?
When Destiny was pitched to me a few years ago this is what stuck with me. An epic story where the lines between multiplayer and solo play were blurred. While you're playing people will drop in and out of your world as a passersby or strong allies. An always online MMO where every event was back with great matchmaking. And to top it off a 10 year lifecycle of non-stop goodness.
Then there is what I expected due to Bungie's pedigree. Wide slew of all types of vehicles for PvE and PvP. An epic story with memorable characters and one liners. A plethora of diverse multiplayer modes. Matchmaking choices galore. With AI that made you think befor you acted.
here is what we got.
Story
A meandering story with no clear focus and many plotholes. No character development at all, just briefly touching on a handful of characters without delving into their story or even making us care about them. The only reason we care about the stranger is because she seemed important for all about 2 seconds before poof she's gone. And the Queen? Shes hot but not much plot development can happen in one cutscene... And while I hear the grimoire is great, it no substitute for in game storytelling (I'm playing a videogame not reading a book). Oh and I don't have time to tell you why I don't have time to tell you about all the story issues.
Gameplay (PvE)
While predominantly as advertised the lack of matchmaking in a lot of content goes directly against what they advertised. There is also the fact they said that you could go to Saturn and that most content would be soloable (only explicitly said that you'd NEED 6 people for VOG). They advertised the vehicles heavily from very early on but they only pop up in once in a mission (interceptor) and twice in strikes (interceptor, and we did borrow that pike). Also often said they didn't want a one gun solution then proceeded to nerf everything till the handcannon was THE solution. (if you don't believe me try soloing a nightfall with the appropriate elemental weapon of each type. You won't get very far with the ar, might do okay with the pulse, do fine with scout and dominate with the HC) And oddly enough while the marriage to inanimate objects hasn't been legalised where I live fate brought Fatebringer into my life and we have been going steady ever since. (I find his marriage statement to directly oppose them telling us to find a role and stick to it i.e don't try to vary your play style)
Gameplay(PvP)
You went from having Slayer, Oddball, King Of The Hill, Capture The Flag, Assault, Territories, Juggernaut, Infection, VIP and multiple variations of each that were ALWAYS AVAILABLE and had strong customization options. To having king of the hill multi (control), Slayer (Clash), Skirmish (Slayer with reduced team size and longer respawn), and Slayer free for all/ Rumble pit (Rumble). Then you have a few game types that rotate in and out (most of which I haven't played due to playing other shooters for PvP because of the lack of variety). Then to top it off you took the only gametype I played and ruined it by taking the big maps out of the normal rotation (thats right I only play control for the chance to play on the big maps or as I like to call them the good maps). As for the elephant in the room *chough* gun balance *chough* my previous post still stands (as well as posts from many others).
10 year/MMO and pricing
It was up until and after it release pitched as having a 10 year life cycle much like the last gen of consoles and MMO's (WOW, FF11, ect) I assumed as I'm sure many early adopters did that destiny was going to be supported for 10 years via expansions and dlc. That our time invested would result in hords of loot that all our newfriends in could never hope to acquire without a similar time investment or not be able to get them at all and a huge world with endless things to do and explore. That when I bought the first two dlc that it was going to be the first wave of a dozen or so expansions (I knew PS3 was going to stop being supported but assumed dlc would still come to PS4). While $30-40 is okay for a MMO due to the very long lifespan of the game for something that's going to get a new installment every two to three years it's absurd. Add to that the pitiful amount of storage and the fact you have to ditch you swag just to make room for exotics and raid gear makes the recently added ascending process pointless (some of the faction gear looks snazzy but there just isn't any room for cosmetic gear).
Value
Have I had fun playing Destiny? Most definitely.
Do I feel that I've gotten what I've paid for? No.
Do I think TTK is worth the price tag? Not yet.
Can Destiny be worth what I've invested and what they want me to invest? It still has plenty of room for growth so yes.
This game while comparable to a MMO in the amount of time invested it's no where near comparable in terms of content and services. It is still just an overpriced shooter missing the staple gamemodes of it compatriots. If you want me to invest in the future of destiny you have to make good on the destiny you promised me to begin with. As of right now you're on the same list as Borderlands II, Diablo III and X-COM TBD while I greatly enjoyed the early ones I'll never buy them again unless the meet my expectations of what they should be.

If I had known it was a shooter with a hint of backstory, to be repeated endlessly it's highly likely I wouldn't have bought it at all. Having said that, I've enjoyed the gameplay and meeting people along the way (just wasn't planning it).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1OjUWw43co 0:40 Saturn 2:12 match making
that kind of matchmaking isnt even in the game.. there is NO way in destiny to "call friends" when an public event is happening.. you would need the whole timer to goto roster, select friend, leave the game, get to clumsy psn feature, send them a message and wait for reply, then return to the public event and notice its been long gone..
