You have a valid point. Even though we can slide it can only go in one direction. One thing you can try is sliding multiple times from direction to the next, but that requires moving the camera quickly and that can leave you a little disoriented if you are not paying close attention. A potential solution would be adding some sort of dodge/rolling mechanic for the next installment, the trick would be finding a place for it in the button layout.
