Guide for Improving PSN connection issues (UPDATED, still WIP, PM me for more help)

YES, this friggin' fixed most of my issues!

21

No, nothing seems to have changed.

Well, this is better than before...

Was this helpful for you? Please come back and answer the poll for improving this thread and solving more issues. PSN doesn't play nice with many ISP's unless you are like level 100 networking geek status like me and know how to make advanced rules to block throttling centers and poor routes on top of simply setting up manual static IP settings and port forwarding. Most people on PSN don't even know how to do the latter and that's the easy part. 1)Go to Portforward.com, look up your router model, follow easy to read screenshots and instructions on how to set up port forwarding and port triggering. (Do Not try to install anything from this site. That would be super dumb.) 2)Put your PS on the DMZ in your router now that it has a static IP. This should be in the same section where you get to Port Forwarding. 3)Turn off firewall settings in your router completely or all the way down. 4)Disable UPnP in your router once port forwarding is set. 5)Disable QoS in router. 6)Don't forget to do the part involving your PS's network settings! finally, 7)Change your PS's DNS to OpenDNS 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220 (if you're already using GoogleDNS you should still try OpenDNS, it is better for PSN) Extra Credit) Try changing your MTU manual to 1400 on your PS or... Try changing your MTU manual to 1400 on your PS AND your Router You may not need to do every option on this list. Try a couple at a time and be sure to save and apply the. Reboot your PS4 your Router AND your modem. Only then should you keep attempting more of these fixes. I would advise skipping steps 3,4 and 5 your first time around and if you still experience the same issues then go for those. PM me for help if you like tl;dr Easy semi-fix for lazy folk
Start by changing JUST your DNS settings to manual on your Playstation, everything else can stay auto if you're not familiar. Change them to 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220 This is OpenDNS and worst case scenario will speed up your downloads and other PSN traffic. Also try changing MTU to manual 1400 on just your PS in the same place just after you change DNS
Lolol I have fixed everything have NAT1 no issues anywhere else (speed test, etc, etc). Bungie needs to fix all this lag even if it means not allowing NAT3 or even NAT 2 connections in this game. Or just run dedicated servers for all aspects of game. I've done everything possible to get my connection the best it can be, but still have really bad lag. Even in strikes. Common bungie you have a good game here, fix it so people who try to get best connection are not at the mercy of the guys who just don't care about their connection.

  • Ahh for the good old days before i had a 'superhub' (total opposite), i used to just plug in to modem, didn't need router/wifi and was nat1, if only i knew how to get both now, ie keep superhub, (combined modem/router) for wifi and plug in direct for a nat1, virginmedia (uk) claims to offer 100mb's but not getting it on psn, close enough on other stuff but had issues with party chat plus the timer on downloads is so depressing, sometimes tells me 5 hours for a measly 4GB patch, rest mode sometimes speeds that up though not allways.

  • I did what you suggested and I'm still getting NAT 2 but at least my connection is a bit more consistent so thanks for putting up this post it does help out.

    • Being that the PS4 and Xbone are on x86-64 architecture, and potentially susceptible to the same attacks that PCs are, why do you recommend disabling the routers firewall and/or using a DMZ? I use 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 for DNS and it works great for me. My MTU is on automatic and I've had no problems, though friends of mine have told me it fixed their issues. Of course I use static IPs on my consoles.

        • I just did a little more double checking and testing and can confirm once again that the MTU 1400 tweak (both on my local network in the router and Playstation) resolved the issue of the PS's Internet test saying my router does not support IP fragmentation at the bottom in scrolling text. Look out for this when testing yours because it's easily missed. Everything else checks out Ok on the test but you'll see this text at the bottom of the screen. Changing MTU to 1400 on the PS settings AND my router DOES FIX THIS and DOES MAKE MY PING BAR GREEN INSTEAD OF RED :)

Try changing your MTU manual to 1400 on your PS AND your Router
who is telling OpenDNS is better for PSN? The DNS or Googles does not matter. Just for information. Playstation Support itselfs suggested me to use Googles DNS.... The best DNS for you is the one with the fastest response time! And messing around with MTU can be really worse! On the WAN side of the router you have to use the MTU of your ISP. Everything else can generate a bad connection. Inside a local LAN usually 1500 is used. I've got 1473 for cable connection from Playstation Support. I don't know the MTU they suggested for wireless anymore. I'm still using 1500, because it works well. The MTU only sets the max packet size. of course if you lower this, your router do not have to fragment the packets anymore. BUT someone else have. Your router also have to handle more packets. This can also screw up your connection.

The openDNS i take it will only help people in a certain country? Depending on where their servers are located. Failing that website called namebench through Google which can be run on your pc will find the fastest one out there for you depending on where in the world you are. MTU should only be changed if you experience packet loss, you'll need to ping a website domain from a pc to see if you do get packet loss. Otherwise you're creating higher latency due to more packets needing to be sent to and from source. Most ISPs and hardware operate fine at 1500 MTU as a standard, but it's worth checking before playing around with this. A good number to start at is 1472 anyway to allow the 28 bytes of overhead info that gets attached to each packet. If I lower my connection to lower than 1400 i can't even sign into PSN. If you use your router for pcs and tablets I'd recommend not turning your firewall off, it will leave you vulnerable to attacks. You wouldn't take away your seashells in your car and rely totally on the airbag to save you in an incident? Keep UPnP on if you use multiple devices on your router for file sharing, streaming to and from for video or use a printer, turning this off stops other devices from seeing each other automatically. For the QoS, sometimes you have the option to change a setting called WMM, sometimes turning that off can change your download speeds. Speedtest.net after changing some settings will tell you if you have better speeds or latency. :-)

          • Glad to see someone else out there Informing their fellow PS3'ers instead of just blaming bungie. :P I have a thread on my clan's page that compliments this one. NAT & Connection issues with Destiny It has link to Bungie's settings required to make PS3 work. ( has all other consoles too) Breif explination of NAT (Network Address Translation) Types. It is the ease in which a computer translates and reaches other places. ( real simple) A Playstation will almost Certianly fail in an online enviroment, if the NAT type is 3 (closed), and sometimes have issues at 2. If you resolve the NAT to 2 or lower, have UPnP turned on in router and PS3, You should never have issues. Good luck.

              • Forgot to mention. Please leave in comments your ISP, Router Model and issue you're having. I'm curious to see how many Fios customers end up here especially. They're the best and I have them but they have some weird problems with PSN.
