Patrol mode in destiny is one of the most immersive open world experiences I have ever experienced and yet something about it is so unsatisfying. The problem is of course the lack of things to do and experience while playing inside this open world type of thing. Right now the only thing to do in patrol is the patrol missions which are probably the worst way you can spend your time (unless you're doing a bounty). In this video Batman rambles on about how many different ways this could be improved, map wide public events like defend the complex from a fallen/vex/hive army which could last up to an hour. Or even another way to improve it would be a bounty system where if you got killed your killer was marked for the world to see and if you killed to many of them you would get marked which could cause waves of increasingly difficult enemies attacking you. All of these would make patrol mode better but another huge problem is that not only is patrol boring. But its way way to easy. I used to play a game called Realm of the Mad God (pretty stupid name huh) and it was a bullet hell MMORPG game. One of the only things that I loved about this was that there was a set of enemies that you had to kill and there were a lot of them. They included things like liches, giants, Red Demons, etc, etc. Trust me there were a lot of them, but when you eventually finished killing all of these monsters then it took the whole realm and all the other players to a dungeon or the kinda endgame content. And then you would rinse and repeat. But this system could be implemented in that kind of way as well. Say all of the patrol missions contributed to summoning a map wide public event as mentioned before, but instead of one dry sour boring type of reward to completing these missions the amount of different types of patrol missions would contribute to different types of reward missions. So completing 5 item pickup missions (ether sups, induction rods), 3 missions where you kill everything, and 2 missions where you kill a leader or something it would summon some sort of Pirate as your stealing his stuff and killing his crew. But this can be changed and tweaked. Another thing great about Realm of the Mad God is that there is a incrementing level of difficulty as you move towards the middle of the map as enemies get stronger and stronger till you get to the godlands or the place where you kill gods, sounds cool, and in this theorised godland you could have custom named knights or captains or even hydras or Arachon priests as like an ultimate battle. Killing these mini bosses could even be a faster way to getting engrams than just killing regular enemies. This would solve the problem of patrol being to easy and to lax to be in any means relevant to higher level players. If any of these ideas were implemented into Destiny I would be more than happy to jump on the moon and grind away patrol missions and kill Custom enemies and eventually reach a reward type mission. Patrol mode has so much potential that could be unlocked through just one or two of these changes and overall make destiny a better, more satisfying game to play.
