Center method works very well.
The worst problem I found running it, back before the new Crota, was the relic runner surviving the venus side against the trash. It was solved by people either rocketing or grenading the Praetorian.
The second issue could be Suplicants still being by the portal when the group exited the portal. Solved by players outside just doing better and killing them as quickly as possible.
Third issue would be oracles not being killed. This is solved by having 1 effective oracle killing gun on hand like: Plan C, or Super Good Advice (Super Good Advice doesn’t loose any ammo when you shoot them, so infinite bullet clip!). If people are lacking either just make sure they don't rely on using scout rifles or something like that and you should be ok. There are more weapons that work well but those are the ones I thought up that worked very well for me.
If that doesn't fix your issues with the center platform tactic then.... just keep at it. The more you play it the more comfortable you will get with the strategy.

If you are finding the suplicants a problem when you jump off the platform just have everyone jump straight back towards the door at 5 second to the damage bonus to be over on Atheon. Should give everyone enough time to wrap around the pillars and shoot any suplicants, from a good range, on either side before the damage bubble and teleport. Also they should be about one jump away from the gate pillar, after taking out the damage bubble, easily avoiding any left over suplicants and ready for the next waves. Having everyone just shooting Atheon during the damage phase is very critical to a faster encounter. And the faster the better.

Your tactic sounds very chaotic. Hiding behind walls would still leave the supplicants to getting at you. And having your shield guy blasting is kind of a waste to me. Think of all the DPS you are missing out on fron all the other players whom could be sitting inside the bubble he creates just emptying clip after clip on him. Less DPS would also make you be warped more times, which is the hardest part of the fight, specially on Venus side as I said. So your tactic might work, but you are inceasing your chances for a wipe dramatically.
