If we're speaking about gameplay mechanics alone, Destiny was an above-average first-person-shooter. Beyond that, Destiny was redundant, trite and stale in almost every other category.
Destiny seemed like it had become a victim of its own hype, making players believe they were getting something they simply did not. Perhaps that void was a coherent story, level variation and a substantive campaign experience -- all of which were arguably nowhere to be found
inb4 this thread is pillaged by Bungie nuthuggers. Glad to see more media outlets are commenting on this game's glaring shortcomings, such as the pretty much non-existent story.
This game has amazing gameplay mechanics, and this just amplifies the disappointment when it comes to the blatant laziness Bungie showed towards pretty much every other facet of the game.
Edit:
For all of you dismissing CNET, Polygon doesn't have a positive view of Destiny or the expansion either.. along with other sites such as Forbes.
Polygon article: https://games.yahoo.com/news/destiny-dark-below-review-no-225853543.html
The Dark Below is the perfect expansion for Destiny — it's just as grandiose and ultimately shallow as the main game.
Destiny suffered from two glaring problems at launch: a lack of content, and a lack of variety in that content. Those issues were compounded by the game's MMO-inspired structure, a progression system that forced players to repeat the same few activities ad nauseam in order to rank up.
As a quote-unquote expansion to Destiny, The Dark Below is presumably meant to address those two major concerns.
In most respects, it fails.
Looking forward to the excuses and illogical arguments to come; some of you provide the lulz.

Cnet is not a good source at all... All of their reviews suck balls. I do agree the story is lackluster but I don't play Destiny for the story so it bothers me not. If you enjoy it (I do) play it. If not? Then don't play it... It's been over 3 months and people are still crying about the same old shyte...

I think it will become the first game ever to be the most disappointing and most popular at the same time. I think it's because all these people who hate the game just can't seem to find anything better to play right now. As far as current next gen games, it's near the top of everyone's lists. Even if you hate it.

Bungie and Activision did this to themselves. If this game had arrived without any warning or pre-release hype, it would have ended up in the hands of people who enjoy it for what it is. But they tried to make it sound like the second-coming, and went on and on about the grand story. These companies have to learn not to lie to the buying public. It never gets them anywhere. Destiny is a good little niche game for the loot-grinding set, with some great shooting mechanics. All they needed to do was be more accurate regarding what it was like, and this shitstorm wouldn't have materialized. But now they've earned the wrath of people like me, who feel like I've been hosed out of $100 for the Guardian Edition, because I was mislead about the nature of the game. As a result, I'm never going to stop making disparaging posts about the game, on just about any forum I can find. I can't get my money back, but I can certainly speak my mind about how I feel about this game.

Destiny's biggest failure IMO is the grind. So many of us were excited to grind out our exotics.......but then it happened......Bungie smashed all of our hard work. I can't get over this, and instead of a real expansion they give us more shit to grind. -blam!- that. -blam!- Destiny.

42 通の返信It's a grinding game. Everyone who doesn't like to grind it should leave.. I know when I'm getting home, I'm grinding strikes and bounties. Saturday I'm doing my third nightfall and three Crota kills.. Oh and three hard VoG's... Then I'm doing it again next week..

3 通の返信Halo 1 had a much deeper and engrossing story than Destiny. You actually had some "oh shit!" moments. I don't think that will ever be the case for Destiny. I'll consider this the beta, and Destiny 2 the actual "true" experience.

1 返信I dunno. It's my favorite game right now. I haven't put it down since it released, so obviously it's pretty damn good.

1 返信I didn't follow the hype, I got it because at the time it was the only game that looked like something I'd enjoy, and I have.

I didn't know CNET did anything on gaming. Are they hurting for SEO? Seems a bit weird to me. But on the other note, I'm of the mind that games are meant for playing and movies are for watching. Ever since games went super hardcore story driven, I stopped watching movies. Now that I've been playing destiny, I kind of want to seen some new movies.

The reason I enjoy this game so much is because of the various ways you can play it. I loved WoW (don't play it anymore), loved multiplayer in Halo, and love cooperative play. This has it all. It's not all top notch, but it definite pleases me. The game was only 60 bucks, and I have a grip of fun. I think I have a less discerning eye than most gamers, because I only became one at the Halo/WoW stage, if you even want to call me a gamer, so I compare Crucible to Halo multiplayer, which for the most part, is on par or better, and I compare raids/strikes to what I experienced in WoW, which I find to be far more fun/entertaining, in large part because of the mindless rinse/repeat/recycle model I experienced in WoW. So who knows.

7 通の返信I was watching a LevelCap youtube review of the DLC, and he said something interesting. It's tough to find games that are putting out full campaign AND multiplayer experiences. Games like Battlefield and CoD focus on multiplayer (and suffer from forgettable story lines), while games like Mass Effect, DA:I, Assassins Creed, and Infamous focus on story (and have incomplete multiplayer aspects at best). Destiny is trying to be a full experience in both regards, in which Bungie was successful in doing with Halo. Of course, in my opinion, a successful multiplayer has top notch, competitive PvP, not necessarily cooperative PvE (although that is always nice). I'm not experienced with PC games, but I wonder if any titles I don't know about have successfully merged two full experiences the way Destiny is trying to do. In Destiny there are people that like the PvE but loathe the PvP. There are people that play Crucible nonstop, but aren't into the PvE, and still others that want more balance and even game modes that do away with Supers to bring the gunplay into true competitive form. It all seems like a lot for one dev team to work on when there are big problems in each area. One thing I've learned from watching the Destiny forums: the team working on The Division has their work cut out for them.
