A Week Apart [Fanfic]

This isn't a serious fanfic - I just took a week and a half off of Destiny for my uncle's funeral and then to visit my wife's family for Thanksgiving, and I wrote the below as a fun email to my friend to celebrate getting to play again tonight. It was just an exercise in creativity and I poked some fun at us and some things in the game, which I thought might provide a few laughs for the community as well. There is a Legend. A Hunter ravaged the countryside of Russia. He left in his wake scores of fallen. He traveled across the solar system, bringing golden light to the darkness. He did not fully understand the events surrounding his actions, but he knew his purpose - to lay waste to those who came against him - and he was good at it. A Titan traveled with him. He was mighty in strength and wisdom. He spoke to the souls of his enemies and touched them deeply. He knew when to strike with impact, and when to shield his allies. He at times lost sight of his primary objective - stopping to display his prowess to challengers - but he was always there in a pinch. Then one day, the Hunter disappeared. It was a week before the Festival of Thanks, a day to celebrate and express gratitude for the Traveler and all they had received from It. The Titan presumed his friend had gone to gather supplies for the feast, but as the days passed without word from him, he worried. He searched the tower to no avail. He scoured the Cosmodrome and scanned the stars for any radio chatter that might indicate his friend's presence. Alas, nothing. The festival came and went. Xur's wares seemed less glimmering that weekend, without his friend there to revel in his wonders. He refused to give up hope. Hope was what sustained the light of the guardians - he could never abandon it entirely. However, he needed to get his mind off of things. He went out to the wastelands of Mars, giving the Cabal time to rest peacefully from their labors. He went to the jungles of Venus, correcting processors the Vex had overclocked with timeless mistakes. He went to the craters of the Moon, cleansing the cultish Hive of their corrupted light. He returned to the Tower an experienced warrior. He knew the intricacies of his gear and customized it precisely to his liking. He was more enlightened than ever, but it was still not enough to stave off the memories that now flowed through him. There was the ball they would kick around together. A few strangers were dancing on the kiosk while another turned on the fan. There was the postmaster, who-- there was mail waiting for him! The Titan nearly broke through the counter to retrieve his message, but disappointment overcame him as he realized it was just a reward for service to the public and a lead for a bounty in the crucible. The Titan sighed, dialed down his emotional feedback loop, turned in his bounties, and retired to his room to recharge... The sun rose on a new day, and gleaming light reflected off the Traveler into the Titan's modest room, highlighting the Fallen claw that was displayed proudly on a shelf - a trophy of his first kill, ripped from a Vandal as it leapt at him from the ceiling. Memory Backup Complete. Defragment Complete. Auxiliary Processes Cycled. The Titan rose from his chair and logged onto his Tower computer. Such an inconvenience. No matter how many Exos petitioned, the Tower never yielded to requests to integrate the Tower companion app into an Exo's frame directly. "Security Risk - to both Tower and Exo" was the company line. Checking for Updates... Bounties updated.. Vendors updated.. New Friend Requests.. New Mail.. Threat Tracker updated.. Solar Traffic & Weather available.. The Titan went through his routine as always, going through the list one by one, skipping only the friends request of course - filled with an absurd amount of fresh invites each day, it was more a bother than anything. A number of requests existed that a lengthy patrol of the Mothyards would take care of, and yet another Sepiks Prime had been constructed and was in need of being repurposed. It would be a good way to fill half the day. The vendors still had nothing new. The newsletter promised new things to come. Lord Shaxx was once again personally inviting him to come school others in the crucible. The Stranger needed her pulse rifle back, and someone named Eris said she'd be arriving soon and needed to speak with him. It sounded like a scam so it joined the rest of the messages in the junk mail. He grabbed his ghost and a few supplies for the road. Just as he went to leave, the thought struck him "maybe I need a new friend." The thought was foreign to him. Even the thought of seriously considering a random friend request was enough to make him think he'd been hacked. Still, he stepped back and powered the terminal. New Friend Requests.. New Mail.. Curiosity had him. The Titan checked his mail for the second time in 10 minutes. There was one message. It was short. It was clear. It was him. "Wanna hunt some dreg tonight?"
