Those crying for exotic wipe have misunderstood…

As you all know, with the new DLC, if you want to further upgrade your exotic to 323 you'll need to re-upgrade it, but many of you didnt understand it. When you swap your exotic to xur, the new exotic you receive will have a base damage of 300, then you re-upgrade it all over to get to 323. It wont go back to 277.. All you are losing until you re-upgrade are the perks. You really didnt want it to instantly get from 300 to 323 when you upgraded, right? http://i.imgur.com/RIKazog.png

  • I wanted my fully upgraded weapons to hold more value than my friends completely unupgraded weapons.

    • Still, upgrading an exotic weapon twice is a little over half a million XP. the math is there to support this, and for people who have pored countless hours into getting and upgrading exotics this just sucks.

      • The 7k glimmer fee is what I don't like. Friday and sat will just become glimmer farming days now

        • I have some exotics I've put time into but I'm not upset. Don't wanna lose your progress? Don't reset it's pretty simple. But don't cry when your exotic is weaker because you chose not to reupgrade. I personally will be re upgrading truth, thorn, and hardlight. Ice breaker and ghorn if I can ever get my damn hands on em.

        • Hard Light and Monte Carlo that I haven't had time to upgrade yet are hanging out in the vault until next week. Same with the Thunderlord that dropped in the hard raid last night. As for the around 10 or so already fully upgraded it's gonna suck...but at least they won't be useless after the DLC drops. Would rather have to re-upgrade the stuff I like than have to spend the next few months hoping RNGesus drops something better.

            I don't think there's a misunderstanding. Players just don't want all their progress and perks erased, which understandable. My MIDA without all the agility perks is just another scout rifle.

          • If exotic weapons couldn't. Be upgraded when they weren't maxed then I would be fine, but to a big FU to the people who have maxed their armor / weapons

            • 1. Not from Bungie themselves 2. Still no perks so have to regrind all of it 3. If they can go through all of the coding to change the starting numbers why not just add one addtional weapon/armor trait line and let us keep our weapons/armors with all buffs we already have.

            • I disagree. We did the grind to upgrade it once, why have to do it again? Where would that be "unfair" to have it immediately upgraded? Maybe Bungie can give us two options. The one that already exists, and one that will allow the weapon to be fully upgraded, just at a higher cost.

            • What makes an "exotic" an "exotic" ? The way it looks, feels, and it's perks. Sure they might let the weapon remain at 300, but you STILL have to go back and get the perks again, which is basically what makes the gun. Plus there were other solutions to this and they chose to reset, out of all things. It's more or less a slap in the face for no reason.

            • No one wants to regrind for a single thing they already unlocked. Plain and simple. We have unique perks which make the guns what they are. We spent time unlocking it. I for sure am not reunlocking it. Until i hear this system being changed im not logging on anymore to destiny. Theres no point. Time to buy games i put off for later

                • I dont think nobody wanted to get a "Free" upgrade in damage, but why remove the time spent on my 20+ exotics? Trust me if I had one or two I wouldn't be so vocal about it. I wouldn't even mind having more upgrade slots added, that need as much exp as the entire weapon took in the first place to max. But don't invalidate my time spent (because it's a lot of time, since day 1)

                  • I don't use exotics for the attack rating. I use them for the -blam!-ing perks. This doesn't help at all.

                    • I was wondering about this too. Classic Bungie with their miscommunication. All they had to say was "new base damage will be 300, perks reset for balancing reasons. Sorry."

So if you've got 42 Exotics (40 on Xbone cuz no Hawkmoon or Monte Carlo) and Xur will have 12 each week, statistically you're going to be waiting a month for the one you need to come around, and given the EXTREME level of randomness in Bungie's RNG, there's going to be people sitting around in FEBRUARY who still haven't had the opportunity to upgrade their Icebreaker.                       • It's still really dumb that the guy who just got an exotic to drop yesterday is going to have just as easy a time upgrading it to the new level as the guy who worked to max the same exotic over the past month. People who are trading in fully upgraded exotics as opposed to Unupgraded exotics should get some sort of benefit from doing so

                            We haven't misunderstood. The time gaining XP, spinmetal/etc, ascendent energies, glimmer - all made pointless in one fell swoop with this update only a few months after the game was released. A person who buys Destiny today and gets Suros Regime on their 3rd crucible match should not have an equal or better gun than someone who put a week's worth of playtime into upgrading it; otherwise, why not just wait until the next DLC to get free weapon upgrades instead of bothering with Crota's End? This is further exacerbated due to all the weapons in the game. Even though the weapon is reset to 302, it is still lost progress for the old player - as a new player is not required to attain that progress in any way shape or form. My two cents - why the backlash ensued and how to fix it: WHY WERE THE EXOTICS ALLOWED TO BE UPGRADED IN THE FIRST PLACE, THE DEVELOPERS DIDN’T HAVE TO EVEN OFFER THIS OPTION DID THEY? Two reasons i see, the 1st one being obvious to some, with the 2nd one perhaps being less obvious: 1. [Giving back to fans] - Developer generosity to allow you to continue playing with the weapons you enjoy to play with. 2. [Lack of Content] If the exotics were not allowed to be upgraded, there would be a severely reduced amount of exotic weapons to play the game with at level 32 – and certainly not enough to match the playstyles players got accustomed to with the original exotics. WHY WAS THE EXOTIC RESET IMPLEMENTED? Two reasons i see, the 1st one being obvious to some, with the 2nd one perhaps being less obvious: 1. [Lack of Content] – Time sink to artificially extend playtime of the new DLC 2. [New & Casual Players] – A much easier and quicker way for new and casual players to upgrade their 260 weapons or newly bought from Xur weapons to 302 attack with far less time and effort than if an extra column of upgrade bubbles were added. TO EXPLAIN THIS THEORY ON NEW & CASUAL PLAYERS, TAKE THE BELOW SCENARIO: Hypothetically if Bungie added an additional column of exotic upgrade nodes for Crotas End - if it took 5 days to unlock 260-300 and 2 days to unlock 300-325, for an old player it would only take them 2 days to upgrade the weapon. For a new player it would take 7 days. Now add on House of Wolves DLC with yet another column of upgrades added and it will take 9 days for the new/casual player that was not keeping up with the game, while it still only takes 2 days for the old player that has been playing consistently throughout the first DLC. And when the third DLC happens it will be 11 days for new players, 2 days for old players, etc – the devs must have determined that with enough DLCs eventually it would take a new/casual player too long to upgrade an exotic to the current level cap. The new system makes it 5 days in this hypothetical situation for everyone even if you never played before. This is great for new and casual players, but for consistent players the time put in previously can be perceived as pointless; this is simply weak game design as it encourages you not to play consistently - since the same level gear will be handed to you without you doing anything if you just wait for the next DLC. Mind you, the level caps are apparently raised in this game every couple of months, not every couple of years like most MMOs. So waiting for the next DLC is not exactly a challenge. SO ARE YOU SAYING YOU FEEL BUNGIE’S DECISIONS TO RESET EXOTICS DURING UPGRADE WITH NO COMPENSATION WAS GOOD GAME DESIGN? No. This is probably the worst way you could bridge the gap between consistent and casual players, although it probably requires the least money/effort on the part of the developer as the exotics do not need to be significantly modified each DLC, just reset. THERE ARE OTHER (IMO BETTER) POSSIBILITIES THAT WOULD HAVE WORKED FOR NEW AND OLD PLAYERS, HERE ARE A COUPLE OF EXAMPLES: 1. ADDING A NEW COLUMN OF UPGRADE NODES WITH 260-300 XP UNLOCKED - When a new/casual player buys the a weapon from XUR, all of the bubbles are unlocked for upgrade (do not not require XP, but *do* require mats/glimmer) up until the current upgrade node’s level cap. So for Crota’s end, the 260-300 tree would be unlocked but 302-325 requires XP. However, when a weapon is upgraded 260-300 retain all upgrades bought previously. This would allow older players to only need to spend mats/gain XP on the 302-325 tree and newer players would be required to collect the mats to upgrade the weapon, which is not nearly as bad as requiring them to collect all of that XP. 2. EXOTIC RESET WITH COMPENSATION - When an old player upgrades a weapon, they get a mat/glimmer credit for that weapon equal to what they put into its upgrades, as well as a +50% XP boost on that weapon until the current DLC's new unlock node is reached (that stacks with telemetry, nightfall, etc). Old players no longer feel their previous time put into the game was pointless. And for a new/casual player the experience would be identical to the current plans. Thoughts? Hopefully some of these ideas and feedback are considered for implementation.

                            • I don't think the attack is what is destroying everyone's faith in this game, I think it's the perks themselves. After I get the exotic perk, I'll normally quit leveling that weapon to move to another. I know damage is a big deal (as I've seen with my fully upgraded Ice Breaker) but what's more important to me is the Ice Breaker perk (which I still haven't seen an overhaul in, and it's still almost completely useless.) I'm not going to stop playing for this simple reason, but it will definitely curb my playtime until I can get them back to their tip-top shape. I agree with everyone that says, "don't scrap experience and time, just add more damage modifying nodes." I think it's a much more simplistic and less aggravating way to do this exotic upgrade thing.
