Police in Cleveland fatally shot a 12-year-old boy wielding what turned out to be a replica gun. They were responding to a 911 call in which a man said a juvenile was scaring people with a gun that probably was fake.
The boy, identified by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office as Tamir Rice, was shot in the torso in the playground area of a recreation center Saturday afternoon.
Deputy Chief Ed Tomba said one officer fired twice after the boy pulled the fake weapon -- which didn't have the orange safety indicator usually found on the muzzle -- from his waistband but had not pointed it at police. The boy did not make verbal threats, Tomba said, but grabbed the replica handgun after being told to raise his hands. He died Sunday at MetroHealth Medical Center.
Sorry, I don't feel bad. There's a reason those orange tips are on toy guns.
Here's a link to a NYT article, including the CCTV footage. The video is obviously NSFW.

In light of seeing the video, I no longer have an argument supporting what the police did. Their actions amount to little more than a drive-by shooting.
Sorry, I don't feel bad.
I understand that internet forums are characterized by a lack of empathy, but I'm gonna have to break character here and say that I do feel bad that a 12 year old died.

I honestly feel like the cops didn't have any other choice. If someone flashed a gun towards you under direct violation of your orders and you being the upholder of the law have to make a decision fast, what would you do?

I feel for the kid, but it's his fault. He shouldn't have been scaring people with a fake yet very real looking gun. When the cop told him to put his hands up, the child should have followed orders. Since the kid reached for his gun the officer had no choice. The officer knew he had a spilt second to make a decision. The cop didn't want to take the chance that the gun was real and risk getting himself or a innocent bystander shot.

26 通の返信Seriously, I can't believe how many are ragging on a damn child like he should have known better, seriously he was a child, his brain has yet to fully form, it's like expecting someone with serious brain injury to act like everyone else. It only shows their failing at simple cognitive reasoning. The reality is the police have access to non-lethal weapons, they chose to go directly to a lethal response despite no reports of shots fired and no report of anyone being shot. They acted in a fear mode when all they had to do was walk over and take it off him, if they had been real men that kid would be at home getting grilled by his parents. Instead they were petty cowards and now they are childkillers. Being a police officer gives the right to deploy lethal force, but they have a responsibility to only use that right when not doing so will result in the serious injury or deaths of themselves or others. There was no evidence of any real risk except a kid carrying a fake gun without a fake indicator. Hell, if they had pointed at a tree and asked him to shoot it, the kid probably would have played along and they would have seen it was fake. But no, instead they chose to be cowards. My sympathy goes out to the family who will never get to see their child grow up.

35 通の返信Ok mad max tell me this: if a 10 year old kid walked up to u and had a fake gun and pointed it at u and u were a police man. What would u choose. 1(if u had any regard for human life then u would not pick this) shoot the kid and that's it done, or tell the parents to get the kids gun or maybe tell the kid to put it down. Choose wisely........ I'll be waiting for your answer >:(

2 通の返信I have a question for everyone who says that the cops are in the wrong: What would you be saying if the police responded, assumed the weapon was fake, and the kid shot an innocent bystander?

NinjaFace999により編集済み: 11/24/2014 11:00:34 PMIm not gunna say the kid deserved it, because every life is valuable and should be cherished. But the police did their job. What people fail to realize is that kids across the country quite often do bring real guns to school, and its a miracle that innocent kids dont get accidentally shot then. So the question is: how were the police supposed to know if it were a real gun or not? Why risk two officers' lives at the chance that it couldve been a real gun? Another point that people fail to realize is that non-lethal means of subduing an attacker at range are usually limited to bean-bag rounds fired from a 12 or 20-ga shotgun or a taser, either of which couldve proven just as fatal, seeing as how the bean-bags are designed to knock out full-grown persons, not children. And then there's the age factor. And the fact that the kid even brought the gun to school in the first place. But in the end, a kid lost his life and its something to mourn over... hopefully its a stern warning to children across the nation about the lethality and seriousness of a real firearm, and how look-alike airsoft (or any type) of plastic gun should be avoided by them until proper training and safety precautions.
