I love video games and would love for my daughter to grow up wanting to play with me but I would never let her play online. Guys are constantly rude 24/7 and make truly vulgar jokes that are inappropriate for women. Or guys immediately turn creepy and try to pickup any girl that happens into a lobby. Its really embarassing when a girl hops on and within the minute there is usually some sexual reference regarding the mouth.
How do girl players actually play any games without being harassed or play without their mics on mute 24/7? Can you forsee women having a place in the gaming community in the future? Besides just the attractive girls that play or model for games and magazines in skimpy clothing? Do women have a chance in gaming?
At this juncture there is no way I would let any girl play video games online and that is such a sad reality imho.
Edit: valid points made about sheltering but what do we do as a society. I know this is unanswerable question. Just a conversation piece. I find it concerning the answer is to deal with it and no proactive response. Thanks for the responses guys guess first time parent worries.

I guess it comes from maturity levels. There is a setting to mute all players except friends so there is that. Not every guy acts out with their sexual thoughts though lol guys still act out like that in real life so at least she could mute them on Destiny lol

1 返信Step one, get a pc Step two get a real mmo with a real comunity Step three ??? Step four profit. My sister plays only mmo's and has never had a problem like the ones you mention. As a former pc gamer now console gamer, the comunities are completely different. Another note, shooters seem to have a more wild, or as you might say vulger, crowd on average in my experience.

1 返信VicReynauldにより編集済み: 11/7/2014 12:56:31 PMThis just stinks of anti-GamerGate, neo-feminism propaganda. People who start comments with "I would never let my kid do X because other people" demonstrate themselves to be bad parents in that they're overly protecting their kids and not preparing them for the real world. This is especially true when it's limiting a child of one gender when that same limitation wouldn't be applied to a child of the opposite gender. That, also, is sexism. It's this kind of doting behavior that are making kids who are unable to deal with the harsh realities of adulthood. Kids who think they're entitled to things or too "special" to fail. Maybe your little girl needs to encounter some of this vile behavior so you can use it as a teachable lesson instead of, you know, trying to wall her off. This is the same kind of lunacy from people talking about how they wouldn't let their kids watch cartoons. Be a proactive parent and other people's behavior won't matter.

My wife is harassed all the time, so thankfully Sony has a privacy setting that only friends can send messages and so on. When we use to split screen CoD constantly, I would be MvP almost always in Black Ops 2 so you know people usually send good players friend requests all the time. So here we are getting numerous friend requests to pop up, but they weren't for me they we're her because of her PSN. She would always finish in the lower 3 of our team sometimes top 3, but I remember all the jokes of her telling me she's better than me. Which I'll let her have that, but I just know it's because there are a lot of pervs and young teens out there. There is nothing wrong with sheltering either, I plan to do the same with my daughter, but I am going to be having privacy settings on her account. It is your daughter and don't let anyone else to you how to raise her, gain her trust and respect and she'll mostly make the right decisions to not let you down.

2 通の返信It's awful. In fact, my wife no longer plays games do to being harassed online. She played red dead redemption online and got in with a posse full of men. Everything was going great and most everyone was respectful. Then this guy on there was obviously high as hell talking crazy, and my wife made a comment to him about being on cocaine, just teasing, as she had played with him many times before. Dude went off, saying some horrible things, one was something along the lines of her having a horse pussy or some nonsense. After that she was completely done playing online games. Very sad, as she had an amazing time playing rdr online.

My daughter plays Destiny and really enjoys it. This is the online game for her since you can be selective with who you want to communicate with. It's also great for her to play with cousins she rarely sees. Fun all around.

10 通の返信MissVixxにより編集済み: 11/6/2014 10:12:36 PMI didn't see #satire so I'm going to take a moment and take you seriously. Uh... it's not that hard. You ignore them. It's that simple. I used to play GTA V online a lot with a mic and every time I got on it was something rude or sexual. Did I care? At first it hurt my feelings. I had a group of 6 guys gang up on me calling me stuff. I am numb to it now. It was actually a good thing. I learned not to take things to heart and to stand up for myself. Some people are mean, you just get the -blam!- over it. And don't you say that it's just guys who are rude/sexual, girls are just as bad. You may not see it as often but it DOES happen. Do we have a place in the gaming community? You DO know that females make up 48% of the gaming community right? What the -blam!- do you me do we have a chance at gaming? I am just as good as any guy, and any guy is just as good as me...I like to think that we're all equal in this situation. I apologize that this is so long.

1 返信well in a world of perverts trying to hit on your daughter over the internet, dont worry i would NOT be that guy!! :) i would be the guy to call her an ugly internet slut your welcome

3 通の返信Certainly the majority of guys I've played with are not that way, but that is part of the reason the clan I'm in exists, it's a safe place for girls to come together and play, and I'm more glad to be free of the attitude that I'm incapable of being as good as any guy simply because I'm a girl.

1 返信Use subliminal messaging and British pop culture to reinforce the ideas of chivalry, manners, and eloquent vocabulary?

I have yet to run into anyone online who has been mean to me or harassed me. I've been well respected online and I do meet a lot of people because I go on the forum and reply to topics where people need help with raid/nightfall/weekly. There are a few on my friends list who talk inappropriately in general, but never towards me and I just ignore it. I also work in a male dominated place so it has helped me toughen up, not get offended if someone happen to say something out of line. You just need to learn to ignore, and don't put yourself out there asking for it either.

10 通の返信Stephieにより編集済み: 11/7/2014 4:34:19 AM80% of the time I play with perfectly respectable guys who joke around and have a good time. They don't harass me or anything. Don't let the assholes ruin it for all the guys. Most guys are chill gamers who thinks its cool that a girl plays. You shouldn't discriminate. She can block who she wants if they make her uncomfortable.

3 通の返信My daughters 14 , she plays Gta but not online , I thought it was a good solution until I asked her what u doin , she replied " going to rob this store so I can pay for a paint job on the car she stole to get hookers"

alot of them are just young, immature, and disrespectful. fortunately for female gamers destiny has no type of communication at all and is also full of sissy males who foolishly make female characters anyway so it is easier for female characters to blend in. they might want to have a gamertag that doesnt sound feminine to help them avoid the boyish internet assaults.

Your concerns could be put into ANYthing. Ex sports, any internet site, work. Your daughter needs to learn how to ddfend herself, know her rights, and proper etiquette for placing a complaint. Sheltering her is the worse because she one day will face these struggles and (thanks to you) will handle it improperly

I'm not trying to discourage girl gamers of any mind but... Video games is a male driven industry. It's like working in construction or hunting. Naturally you think of guys as the main player base for gaming. Granted those mobile games give women a huge % of "gamers" but I don't consider mobile gamers as real gamers. It's your daughter and your choice, but maybe let her decide when she's older. Good luck, sir

2 通の返信I'm with you mate. Lots of articles in the press at the moment about this sort of thing. Gamers that do this are damaging the progression of their own industry. It seems if people are racist, it's bannable but sexist is fine.
