I love video games and would love for my daughter to grow up wanting to play with me but I would never let her play online. Guys are constantly rude 24/7 and make truly vulgar jokes that are inappropriate for women. Or guys immediately turn creepy and try to pickup any girl that happens into a lobby. Its really embarassing when a girl hops on and within the minute there is usually some sexual reference regarding the mouth.
How do girl players actually play any games without being harassed or play without their mics on mute 24/7? Can you forsee women having a place in the gaming community in the future? Besides just the attractive girls that play or model for games and magazines in skimpy clothing? Do women have a chance in gaming?
At this juncture there is no way I would let any girl play video games online and that is such a sad reality imho.
Edit: valid points made about sheltering but what do we do as a society. I know this is unanswerable question. Just a conversation piece. I find it concerning the answer is to deal with it and no proactive response. Thanks for the responses guys guess first time parent worries.

5 通の返信I'm a girl gamer and although this does happen it's not as frequent as you think, the blokes that ur talking about are just as likely to b rude to other male gamers, it's easy to find respectful male gamers to game with, don't lose hope or deny your daughter :)

2 通の返信READ ALL OF THIS Some girls can play game and they don't have to talk to people if your on Xbox because they invented this thing called "optional game chat" and you can disable the ability to talk to people that aren't on your friends list. You can also make it so that you have to type in a password to accept or send friend requests. And it all depends on what game your playing: call of duty= yes your right that will happen Destiny= unknown because there is not game chat yet. And apart from that it all depends on what kind of person your daughter is. Is she easily offended? Will give out her kik or Instagram? If that's what she is like then your definitely right. But your thoughts don't mean anything, because if she wants to play online then let her play online because if you want her to play with you then you are going to have to give her the full 100% gaming experience.

Isn't it just as detrimental to allow your sons to be exposed to men treating woman in such a way? I believe if you teach someone male or female what is truly right they can enjoy the game as much as you have. I used to get a lot of what your referring to when I played in the Xbox community. I have found play station to be less vulgar especially since bungee decided to change the chat to fireteam chat only it really seems to make players more accountable and at least seem more mature. And the trick isn't to mute yourself it's to mute the potty mouths. Good luck raising your Gamer Girl! -SurvivingNSanity

And what do u think will happen in college? Guys think about sex on average ever 6 sec. Depending on the situation. But what do u expect? Starting a movement on harrassment over vulgar comments...U have a better chance at banning porn. Am I saying deal with? Nope I'm saying train your daughter in the ancient art of gaming communications. Tell her what to accept and what to avoid play games with her. Make her tough. I say tough as in General Patton tough. No need for pansys.

There is no good answer to this unfortunately because the average age of people playing online is so low. Even if they are older most males ( I won't use the word men in this case) don't have the mental maturity to accept female players into their comfort zone. I find myself laughing uncontrollably at the comments made towards my wife when she plays online. She has a child like voice over xbox live and most people think she is just another 10 year old talking smack. As soon as they find out she is a girl in rolls all the sex jokes and invites to the mouth as you say. She is an above average player and can more than hold her own in any FPS and usually once the comments start she just singles out those players on the map until they cry foul lol. Long story short teach her why boys make those comments online and the fact that they would never have the guts to do so in real life. Internet anonymity gives people a voice they wouldn't otherwise have so if she knows why she can easily talk her way around them and quiet the stupidity quickly.

I think you have to trust her to make friends of ppl who aren't rude and don't make those kinds of comments. I definitely know what you mean because I hear it all the time too. There is a future for girl gamers too though. I find it more fun watching a girl whip a guys ass in anything just so I can talk shit to the dude. There are very many girls who are skilled at gaming, so I think you should get here a system and see what happens.

5 通の返信Internet + Anonymity = Dumbshits. People aren't disciplined enough to respect others online, and that's pretty sad. Even 8-9 year olds swear online, COD is a perfect example of what that's like. I blame the parents for not disciplining their kids enough. It's why a lot of people online seem so aloof, they feel being an idiot online makes them cool.

I have a lot of respect for parents like you but part of online gaming is getting past all the bad and playing games with friends that don't make those comments and she will have to learn at some time that there are inappropriate people online because they can be. But don't deprive the joy of actually playing a good game with other people, I understand being protective but there needs to be a learning curve of the Internet and its people.

BruHAWKにより編集済み: 11/7/2014 5:59:34 PMThe problem is that there is a very vast portion of the gaming population that has no respect for anything or anyone when they can be completely anonymous. I've been online gaming for a long time (I'm 31, have been playing online games since probably 1996). The first game that I played that really utilized voice chat was Counter-Strike, and yes would occasionally run into the odd "dummy", but for the most part, there was respect. I played that game with numerous female gamers, and never did I hear any harassing or bullying directed towards them (Not to say it didn't happen, but rather that I never encountered it). But that was the "early" form of online gaming where you had to at least have some basic technical computer knowledge (i.e. had to have the proper hardware setup, software setup, etc.) to enjoy these games. Now, anyone can get online. Everything is ready to go. Buy the system, plug it in, hook up a microphone and now anyone can say anything without any repercussions. Which I don't get. When I got the Xbox One, Microsoft stated that reputation would matter. If you have a bad rep, you don't get matched up with people who have a good rep. I thought they also indicated that harassing/bullying would result in account bans... I haven't seen that either. We should be trying to develop a gaming community where respect is commonplace, not a bizarre occurrence. I can't count how many randoms we have picked up for the raid who were amazed how respectful and fun our group was compared to others they have been in where they would get crapped on for doing something wrong. That's not the way it should be. If you are a female, a "newbie", or a even minority (Don't even get me started on the racism in gaming), you should not be afraid to turn on your mic, or have to mute or ignore rude people, just like you shouldn't have to do that in real life.
