There are many points that I think have to be made. First I'll say Destiny is an amazing looking game with a soundtrack to rival any game out there, however, it does not make up for the glaring flaws.
Story
First of all the story is non-existent inside the game. We're never given an epic story where we feel like a hero, in all honesty, my friends and I came up with better stories in 5 minutes playing war as kids. We need a full story that draws us in, that was a huge part of HALO, and I hate to bring it up because I didn't play much of the aforementioned games, but the story was there and it made you want to learn about everything in that universe. I know you can do this Bungie, you've done it before.
Grimoire
Honestly, I think this is what hurts the most. The story was ripped out and shredded into little tiny bite sized chunks for us to collect. I expected the Grimoire to enhance the game's story, not be it. If I wanted to spend my days collecting things I would have bought a Pokemon game. There's some great content in the grimoire, I just wish you guys had taken the time to actually put it in the game, either as audio clips to recover and play in game or as cutscenes. If I'm collecting things, I want to at least be able to access them from the main menu and not have to leave the game and break the experience of playing with my friends to figure out what I just learned.
Gamepay
The core mechanics of the game are solid, with the exception of gravity on the moon (that really should have been tweaked well before launch). My main complaint is a lack of variety in the mechanics, Every mission is pretty much the same, deploy ghost, defend ghost, three waves spawn, final boss fight. Seriously? The mission variety isn't even phoned in on this one, it's telegraphed in.
Weapons
I love the selection of weapons, I would like more skins for them though. It's minor but leads into something major. Balancing weapons. Weapons, like players, are not all created equal in ability. I say this because nerfing every weapon won't help in the long run. I use an auto rifle with a scope, okay it's one of my many weapons, the scope is similar to an ACOG type, which gives me a limited zoom capability, it also means I can headshot with it, because of the enhanced accuracy, and I've learned how to compensate for the recoil of the shots. It's something I've learned over multiple games, I also use a pulse rifle and use the same technique while firing. I admit I do not PvP much, but I accept my own limitations there, getting hit with a shotgun at point blank, should do serious damage, and epic weapons should do epic damage. Not everything is created equal, embrace that idea.
Armor customization
I had two friends with us, all playing hunters and the only difference was the armor shader and the cloak. I remember the reveal video where a Bungie employee boasted about making my guardian feel like it was truly mine. Right now, I feel like I should just crank up Weird Al's "I think I'm a clone now" when I get my friends playing hunters. It doesn't feel like my guardian, or my hunter, it feels like I'm forced to wear the same armor as everyone else to be the best I can. It makes me wonder about the MMO mechanics because most MMOs allow you to swap components to other armor, so the stats stay the same but the armor is the player's, a true reflection of who they want their character to be. Shaders are a joke, it's like being handed a color swatch and told "this is what your whole house will look like, but it has to be in these two or three colors." It just doesn't work well in my opinion.
Repetitiveness
Okay this is the big one. It intersects with every topic covered here. This is where lack of content is truly dragged into the light of day and exposed. Someone must have pointed out that six strikes, seven on PS, would not hold gamers for 3 months as we waited for DLC. A single raid as well? Could we get more than one? please? The events highlight the lack of content as well, the Queen's wrath was, let's be honest, a let down. I was expecting some more story content to explain about the Reefborn and their queen and old enemies. Instead we got "go do the same missions and strikes as your weeklies and dailies, only a little harder, and no, we still won't explain why this is happening." The evens are reskins of stuff in the game, and not even clever reskins, add a single cutscene in and I would have been singing praises. You didn't so I can't.
Locations
More locations. I want what was shown at E3 2013, I want that massive universe that drags me from planet to planet. I know, I know, it's coming in "future" DLC. I was so excited about Europa and the old ruins of Chicago and exploring the universe that looked so lovingly crafted. What happened? Honestly. What happened to all those moments that made us drool at E3 2013? I know, see future DLC answer. I've been to Earth, the Tower, the Moon, Venus, and Mars. All great, can we get more than one location on these planets though? it's kind of like being shown the trailer for an epic space opera and when you get to the theater after buying tickets weeks in advance, you're given a viewmaster. It just leaves a lot to be desired.
Right now Destiny is a "social game", where your enjoyment is directly linked to the friends you play with. Soloing in the game is great, until you finish the story in a few hours (a couple days for casual type players). After that happens you'll be grouping with friends grinding ad nasuem in hopes that some legendary gear drops from a borked RNG system that was clearly rigged to keep the player base grinding. When grinding is expected to hold people over until DLC hits, there's something wrong. Destiny still has potential, some players you'll win back, some you won't. Like in life you get one chance at a first impression, unfortunately Destiny wasted its first impression and has managed to make some swear it off all together. A key part of rebuilding that trust is communicating with us - the community - I know you can't reveal all the plans for the game, but less vague answers would be appreciated, some solid information on what we can expect in each area of the game would go a long way to making all of us far more comfortable. When I see a weekly update, I would love an actual update that is clear on what's happening behind the scenes, I know, you have have to keep that close to the chest, I really do; but I shouldn't have to breakout a Ouija board, brew a cup of tea to read the leaves and have a tarot deck handy to figure out what the news actually is (okay, that was sarcasm, I apologize, but you get the gist of it). Remember Bungie, the majority of the community want to help make Destiny a huge success, we're not the enemy, in fact, we're your best marketing department; so let's work together to make Destiny not just a game but something besides a cash cow for the publisher, make it something special, something we can be proud to say we pre-ordered months before launch, and though we had some rough times, we're still playing years from now.
I thin the cards actually put a nice twist on the game. You've got to complete all these challenges and it reveals story of the game.
Makes people play differently and more of it
