People actually shame female gamers?
I kind of assumed that was a myth......

Nope, many times (not all of course, but quite a few) I have been invited or asked to help someone while I'm in the tower, join fireteam, say hello like a normal person, and either get hit on, told never mind because girls can't play video games, or added to friends list and the creepy messages start after we are no longer in fireteam together.

That is kinda..... odd and very over the top. Admittedly in some respects there is an awkwardness to having a "girl gamer' in the chat you don't really know... at least I find that some times. I just don't want to be "that guy", especially when you are the new gamer to the group.The groups I have been a part of like that were all pretty open so it wasn't a big deal and I was a regular before I knew it.
