What does MMO stand for?
-Massively Multiplayer Online Game
Wait a minute isn't that what Destiny is?
-YES
What is an RPG?
-Role Playing Game
- Woah so you pick a class such as a Titan, Warlock, or a Hunter. And there are other classes within those classes.
- NO WAY DESTINY IS AN MMORPG!!!
Wikipedia isn't the most valid source of information but I'll take my chances on it.
"Massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) mix the genres of role-playing video games and massively multiplayer online games, possibly in the form of web browser-based games, in which a very large number of players interact with one another within a virtual world.
As in all RPGs, the player assume the role of a character (often in a fantasy world or science-fiction world) and takes control over many of that character's actions. MMORPGs are distinguished from single-player or small multi-player online RPGs by the number of players able to interact together, and by the game's persistent world (usually hosted by the game's publisher), which continues to exist and evolve while the player is offline and away from the game."

First we have to take a look at each term and their meaning in terms of gaming and its culture. Let's start with RPG: RPGs do mean Role-Playing-Games, but using the reasoning that just because you play a role makes it an RPG, which is simply untrue. With that same argument, then 99% of all games out there would be considered RPGs. In reality, an RPG needs the following requirements: -Leveling -Customization -Loot -Questing -Illusion of choice within the narrative -An immersive plotline Destiny does not feed the last three of those, and only has the barest of elements which are just the generic aspects of RPGs. Now for MMO: An MMO means Massively-Multiplayer-Online, and if you just take it as that, then just like with RPG then all modern games will fit into that, even games like Call of Duty and Halo which are certainely not MMOs. An MMO is typically branded for games such as WoW where you can have many players within one area at any given time, and Destiny does not hit that goal in the slightest. At most, you can have 16 people in an isolated bubble area, but you really only see about maybe 6 or 8 (at most) people unless you are in the tower. The social interaction between players is something that is also expected of for MMOs and with only being able to wave, point, dance, or sit with other players definitely means for a lacking experience in that regard. Just because a lot of people can play online in a game at one time does not make it an MMO or even Halo 2 would be classified as that. Destiny would fit best in the subgenre of First-Person-Shooter where it has Role-Playing-Game elements, in otherwords it would be an FPS with RPG elements. Think of it like the game Rage which also had skills and unlockables in addition to a loot system, just that unlike with Rage you can go into co op with your friends and have a chance of seeing people in what would be more considered as living-load-screens.

I wouldn't say destiny is an rpg anymore than halo was, you define the look of your character, but that's it, you aren't making choices or affecting anything as the story is totally linear, thus your not really role playing anymore than you were as the master chief in halo. and the max users you get is 16, whilst there's no definition of massively multiplayer, I think you'd struggle to justify that (though I have played mmos with 32 person map limits), at most it's a multiplayer online first person shooter, that said it does incorporate rpg elements like levels and gearing, and there's heavy elements of traditional mmos here too, so I wouldn't say your right, or wrong, to call it an mmorpgfps.. the game has bit of an identity crisis, it works in some cases, but in others (eg, loot system) it does feel kind of awkward

1 返信i love this game... but by interact together they are talking about on the same server. max in a game is like 12, where an mmo can have 100s or thousands(not in the same area but in the same server) SO by your definition of MMO Cod is a MMORPG shooter, cause i set up my own class in cod, i pick everything to make my guy to my liking.... Destiney is an Online Shooter RPG fits the definition the best, you can interact with a small group of people (dancing and pointing is interacting) and it is an RPG shooter

It might be both of those, MMO and RPG, in definition but it fails in the execution at both. I never felt attached to my character, and part of that was the lack of any real skill tree that I was in control of or that made me make any real decisions when it came to the growth of my character. And while it is true that there might be massive amounts of players online at one time, the fact that I can see 15 others in the Tower, and far less on the maps inside of the game, makes it feel very small and almost the same as a single-player game. Outside of the strikes most of the time in the game (patrol, missions, etc...) is spent as a solo player. Even if you have a fireteam of 3 players, that really is just Co-op play.

Not enough content for Mmo, shoot it's not even open world. Also you are hardly interactive with other players. As for RPG, not enough lore/story to even merit that as well. This game is in the shadows of everything but other fps games

4 通の返信calling this game an mmo is an insult to the mmo genre, shit a arma 2 game is more mmo like than this game. and its not an mmo.

this game could have been tremendous...instead it's just blah....i keep thinking about the original vision of destiny and all that could have been. that game could have become legend....instead we get this watered down version that while playing when my GF says "honey i need you to help with blah blah blah" i have not problem dropping the controler. i was really looking for a reason to break up with her and the original vision of destiny was the basket i put all those eggs into. don't get me wrong for some reason i don't understand i keep playing it over and over agian at the same time thinking "wow this is really boring" or "what is the story/reason behind this particular event i'm doing". remember grape drink and grape juice look the same and sometimes taste the same but they are not the same formula. right now destiny is grape drink and the original vision is the grape juice i salavate for.

We also have MMORPG themed names for our enemies such as: Goblins, Hobgoblins, Minotaurs, Cyclops, Hydras, Harpies, Praetorians, Legionaries, Phalanxs, Centurions, Colossus, etc. White Green Blue Purple Yellow item rarity used in like every MMORPG ever. And don't get me started with the names of some of the weapons and armors and the classes. Yeah, I mean if you completely remove the FPS part of this game and turn it into a hack and slash, it becomes a full on MMORPG. Because of it's aspects, it's an MMORPG, but it's also an FPS. So it's somewhere in the middle of those two.
players interact with one another within a virtual world.
Yeaah but they don't unless they're match-made together, and even then the interaction is limited to being melee'd if you're not moving with the team..

3 通の返信you are a fucing -blam!-, tell me one mmo where you cant talk to anyone like in destiny

1 返信A heavily instanced one maybe, kinda like GW1 but smaller. 16 random's hooked together at a time doesn't really count as "Massively" in my books, shit we'd get more people in one place at a time on MUDs. In fairness it does look like a duck and it quacks like a duck especially with the loot treadmill.
