There's a difference between challenge and frustration. A *challenge* would be not getting legendary/exotic items because the skill level required was too much for you to handle. This was not a challenge. This was frustration, where you do everything in your power to get good items, and the cryptarch takes a huge shit right on your chest and says "-blam!- you." I know you said you loved the tryhards complaining, but the fact of the matter is that no matter what you may think, those tryhards deserve better gear far more than someone who doesn't play much at all. Or someone who is terrible at the game.
